Chapter 4 - The Man Who Managed Everything

Daniel did not deny accessing the file.

“I maintain those records,” he said the next morning, seated opposite Luca in the library. “You authorized me years ago.”

“Not at four twelve yesterday.”

Daniel adjusted his cuff. “An automated synchronization perhaps.”

“Then explain why someone reactivated my retired security code.”

Daniel's fingers stopped moving.

Luca waited. He had learned that silence made a liar work harder than shouting.

Finally Daniel said, “Belini asked for access to the estate systems. She said you wanted to review the trust arrangements before the wedding.”

“And you believed her?”

“She had your engagement ring on her hand.”

“That isn't authorization.”

Daniel nodded, a little too quickly.

Marco entered with documents from the registrar. The company that managed the listening devices, Russo Strategic Holdings, had recently received a substantial payment from a Castellano family trust.

A payment Daniel had approved.

“Consulting services,” Daniel said when confronted. “Risk assessment for the ceremony.”

“Where is the report?” Luca asked.

Daniel said he'd obtain it.

“Sit down,” Luca replied. “Marco can call them.”

While they waited, Luca received a message from Dr. Harris. Emma's examination showed significant bruising and muscle strain; she would need rest and follow-up, but there was no indication of a fracture. Luca asked that she be given whatever support she needed.

Emma was in the breakfast room when Mrs. Carter told her Luca wanted to see her. She had slept poorly. Her back ached, but she could walk slowly without assistance.

She entered the library to find Daniel sitting rigidly beside the fireplace.

“Do you recognize him?” Luca asked.

Emma shook her head. “Only from the house.”

“Did he come near the study yesterday?”

She considered. “I heard a man outside the door just before Belini came in. I didn't see him.”

“Could you recognize the voice?”

“Maybe.”

Marco played part of a preserved recording. A man's voice said, “The authorization must be in place before Saturday.”

Emma looked up. “That's the voice.”

Daniel's smile was thin. “The recording is distorted. You cannot possibly know.”

“I remember the way he says Saturday,” Emma replied. “He was angry.”

Luca watched Daniel.

“You told me the consultants were arranging wedding security. Why were they discussing medical authorization?”

Daniel stood. “I've served this family faithfully. I won't tolerate an interrogation based on a maid's guess.”

“You can leave when I understand what you purchased with my money.”

Marco's phone rang. The security company confirmed that there had been no legitimate wedding assessment. The payment purchased encrypted remote-access equipment and a private recording archive.

Daniel sat down again.

Luca's voice remained steady. “Who instructed you?”

Daniel stared at the carpet.

“Belini approached me,” he admitted. “She said you were going to leave her without protection.”

“Protection from what?”

“Your family. Your associates. She believed the new agreement would make her a target.”

Emma could understand fear. She could not understand using it to break into someone's private office.

“Why didn't she just ask him?” Emma said.

Daniel did not answer.

Then Marco placed another document on Luca's desk: a draft power-of-attorney form naming Belini as temporary decision-maker if Luca became unable to act.

It bore Luca's electronic signature.

Luca had never seen it.

Daniel looked up sharply. “I didn't prepare that.”

“Then who did?”

Daniel's face changed. For the first time, he looked genuinely frightened.

“Adriana,” he whispered. “She told me it was only a contingency. But she wasn't working for Belini alone.”
