Chapter 9 - The Saturday That Never Became a Wedding

Saturday arrived without flowers in the chapel.

Instead of wedding guests, the estate received Luca's independent attorney, investigators, and two representatives from the family trust. Everyone entered through the front gate under ordinary security procedures. Luca wanted a record of everything, not a private revenge that could be challenged later.

Belini remained in the guest wing wearing a simple dark-red dress. Her attorney sat beside her when Luca entered.

“I've postponed the wedding indefinitely,” he said.

“I know.”

“You can leave with your attorney after your statement.”

Belini looked down at her hands. “I didn't think you'd give me that choice.”

“Choice is what you took from Emma.”

For the first time, Belini did not attempt to defend herself.

She admitted that Vittorio had warned her the Castellano family would reject her, that Luca was secretly revising the will, and that their marriage would leave her dependent on his goodwill. Adriana offered the recordings as reassurance. Belini agreed, then concealed the mirror when Emma discovered it.

She signed a detailed statement about the push, the false conservatory story, and her role in installing the recorder.

Emma did not attend. She spent the morning with her mother, whom Luca had arranged to bring to the estate for a visit. Her mother looked at the bruising visible above Emma's collar and held her hand for a long time.

“You don't have to stay here,” she said.

“I know.”

“Do you believe him when he says you're safe?”

Emma considered. “I believe he's trying to make it true.”

Later that afternoon, Marco called Luca into the study.

“We found Vittorio,” he said.

“Where?”

“At Russo Strategic's office. He wasn't expecting the investigators.”

“And Adriana?”

“She left yesterday morning. Her attorney says she'll make herself available.”

Luca looked toward the empty space above the fireplace. The mirror had been removed for forensic examination. Without it, the room seemed larger, though not entirely his again.

“What about the forged authorization?”

“Void. The trust administrators have confirmed the original documents and frozen any disputed transfers pending review.”

It should have felt like victory.

Instead Luca asked, “Where is Daniel?”

“In a meeting with his lawyer.”

Daniel had surrendered his company credentials and admitted the concealed financial error. Elena had provided the communications with Adriana, which established how the access codes were obtained. Paul had confirmed the uninspected delivery. The case now had a chain of evidence rather than a collection of suspicions.

Emma entered carefully, carrying a small envelope.

“Mrs. Carter gave me this,” she said. “It was inside the box from the mirror. She found it when the storage room was cleared.”

Inside lay a handwritten note on the decorator's plain stationery. Emma recognized Adriana's neat slanting letters from the visitor register.

Luca read it aloud: “Make sure she carries it herself. If it breaks, blame the maid.”

Emma closed her eyes.

The mirror's weight. Belini's remarks about scratching the floor. The order to move it in front of twenty-six guests.

It had all been deliberate.

Luca stared at the paper. “They wanted you dismissed before you could tell me what you saw.”

Emma nodded slowly.

“Then Belini pushed me, and the plan changed.”

Marco's phone rang. He listened with a frown.

“The investigators found an additional account in Russo Strategic's records,” he said. “Money was transferred from the company the morning after the mirror arrived.”

“Who received it?” Luca asked.

Marco looked at Emma.

“A trust set up in your mother's name.”
