Chapter 7 - The Deputy Who Kept the Keys

Elena Ward had been Marco's deputy for four years. She knew the security systems, the delivery schedule, and the names of almost everyone who entered the Castellano estate.

When Luca called her into the surveillance room, she looked from his face to Marco's and understood that something had changed.

“Is there a problem?” she asked.

“There is,” Luca replied. “We need to establish who accessed this terminal Thursday morning.”

Elena studied the audit report.

“That was Marco's login.”

“He wasn't here,” Luca said.

“Then someone stole his credentials.”

“Did you see anyone?”

“No.”

Marco placed a still image from the service corridor on the table. It showed Elena speaking to Vittorio Russo near the staff entrance.

Her composure broke.

“That conversation wasn't about the house,” she said.

“Then what was it about?”

Elena looked at Marco, and for a moment her voice softened.

“My brother.”

The room was quiet.

She explained that her younger brother had borrowed heavily from a company controlled by Vittorio. When he missed payments, representatives began contacting Elena at work. Vittorio offered to settle the debt if she approved a temporary access credential and kept silent about the mirror's delivery.

“I thought they wanted financial records,” she said. “I didn't know they planned to forge medical documents.”

“Did you copy Marco's login?” Luca asked.

“Yes.”

“Who received it?”

“Adriana.”

Marco leaned back, visibly wounded.

“You could have told me.”

Elena's eyes filled. “I thought you'd dismiss me.”

“I might have,” he said. “But I would have helped your brother find protection.”

Luca did not excuse the betrayal. He arranged for Elena's access to be revoked and referred the evidence to his attorney for the appropriate authorities. He also directed Marco to have her brother contacted by independent counsel, away from Russo influence.

Emma listened from the adjoining doorway. None of it was simple. Elena had betrayed the family that employed her, but someone had deliberately found the person she was most afraid of losing.

Luca asked her one final question.

“Why was the second device designed to receive commands?”

Elena hesitated.

“Because the first recording wasn't the whole operation.”

“What else?”

“They wanted to control the desk lock. The receiver activated a small mechanism Adriana installed behind the drawer.”

Marco opened his mouth, then closed it.

“The medical authorization,” he said.

Elena nodded. “They planned to replace the real file with the forged version. The listening device was supposed to tell them when Luca left the room.”

“So the recordings were surveillance,” Luca said. “The receiver was for access.”

“Yes.”

Emma thought of Belini pushing her against the desk. The injury had happened because Emma came close to the mirror before anyone could finish removing evidence.

“What were they going to do with the authorization?” she asked.

Elena glanced at Luca. “Vittorio wanted it ready for Saturday. He told Adriana the wedding was their last opportunity.”

“Opportunity for what?”

“I don't know. But Adriana sent me a draft calendar.”

The calendar listed the wedding ceremony, the reception, and a meeting at a private clinic on Sunday morning.
