Chapter 3 - The Agreement Elena Signed

The chapel beneath Moretti House had not been used since Luca was seventeen.
Nobody prayed there anymore.
That did not mean nobody visited.
Marco found fresh dust marks near the altar before anyone touched it.
A narrow stone panel had been moved recently.
Luca looked at Belini.
She remained silent.
Vittorio inserted the brass key into a lock hidden beneath the carved base.
Nothing happened.
Emma stepped closer.
“There’s another mechanism.”
Vittorio looked at her.
“How do you know?”
“My mother repaired old office locks when landlords wouldn’t.”
She crouched.
A second keyway had been disguised behind a brass hinge.
Vittorio’s expression shifted.
“Elena designed that.”
Emma looked up.
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
Luca watched her absorb another impossible fact.
Emma pressed the hinge.
A narrow drawer opened.
Inside rested a silver token no larger than a coin.
On one side:
A lion beneath three stars.
On the other:
A single letter.
E.
The stone panel released.
Behind it was a small room lined with steel cabinets.
No treasure.
No gold.
No weapons.
Files.
Old ledgers.
Sealed photographs.
Bank records.
Cassette tapes.
Two hard drives.
And one envelope labeled in Elena Russo’s handwriting.
FOR EMMA.
Emma stopped at the threshold.
“I know her writing.”
Luca did not touch the envelope.
“Then you open it.”
Her hands trembled as she broke the seal.
Inside was a copy of the twenty-eight-year-old agreement.
This version was complete.
Elena Russo’s signature had not been damaged.
Neither had the final page.
Emma read the first paragraph twice.
“This says my mother was a custodial trustee.”
Vittorio nodded.
“She protected records the Moretti family could not safely keep under its own name.”
“Why her?”
“Because she had no criminal record, no family connection anyone could prove, and more courage than half my captains.”
Luca turned a page.
The old accounts were described as emergency holdings.
Fourteen million dollars.
But underneath them sat a second schedule.
Voting shares.
Port leases.
Land deeds.
Evidence of bribery involving judges, union officials, and three companies tied to the Bellini family.
Belini stared at the pages.
Luca noticed.
“You have seen this before.”
“No.”
“You knew where to look.”
“I didn’t.”
Emma kept reading.
“If Elena Russo dies before formally transferring custody, authority passes to her surviving female descendant.”
She looked up.
“Me.”
“Yes,” Vittorio said.
Emma laughed once.
It sounded frightened.
“I was six.”
“That was the point.”
“What point?”
“Nobody could force a child to surrender something she did not know existed.”
Luca’s eyes hardened.
“Someone tried anyway.”
Vittorio looked toward Belini.
“Eventually.”
Belini folded her arms.
“You are making me responsible for something written when I was a child.”
“No,” Luca said. “The drive does that.”
Marco had brought the isolated computer downstairs.
He opened the decrypted folder again.
Marriage trust.
Proxy authorization.
Copies of Luca’s signature.
Transfers scheduled for Friday.
Then he found a second directory hidden beneath the first.
ACCESS CONDITION.
Marco read silently.
His expression changed.
“What?” Luca asked.
Marco turned the screen.
“The Bellini transfer could not finalize unless Emma Russo was legally discredited before the trust was signed.”
Emma stared.
“Discredited how?”
“Fraud. Theft. Evidence tampering. Any felony challenge that would freeze your custodial claim.”
The wedding dress suddenly made perfect sense.
Belini had not needed Emma merely to touch the drive.
She had needed witnesses to see Emma wearing the one object where the drive would later be found.
Luca’s voice dropped.
“You planned to accuse her.”
Belini’s composure cracked.
“You don’t understand what would happen if those files became public.”
There it was.
Not denial.
Luca took one slow step toward her.
“Then explain it.”
Belini looked at Vittorio.
“He knows.”
Luca followed her gaze.
Vittorio’s face had gone still.
“What does she mean?”
The older man did not answer immediately.
Emma held the letter from her mother against her chest.
Finally Vittorio said, “Because Elena did not create the agreement to protect Moretti money.”
He looked at Luca.
“She created it because she had proof your mother’s death was not an accident either.”
The room went silent.
May you like
Luca had lost one parent twice in a single night.
Now someone had just changed the death of the other.
