Chapter 9 - The Wedding That Became a Trap

Friday arrived anyway.
The trust was still scheduled to be signed at six.
So Luca let everyone believe it would be.
The conservatory was decorated exactly as Belini had planned.
White flowers.
Crystal.
Champagne.
Forty-six guests.
Only three people knew the engagement was over.
Luca.
Emma.
Belini.
Belini wore red.
Not because Luca asked.
Because she said if the Bellini network was watching, changing her habits would warn them.
Emma stood near the rear doors in a dark green dress borrowed from Rosa.
For the first time since entering Moretti House, she was not wearing a uniform.
Luca noticed.
He said nothing.
Marco had men positioned outside.
Vittorio waited in the chapel passage.
Federal financial investigators—quietly contacted through one of Luca’s legitimate attorneys—waited two blocks away with sealed warrants prepared from copies of Elena’s evidence.
At six fourteen, Matteo Bellori entered under guard.
He was not a guest.
He was bait.
Several people in the room went visibly pale when they saw him.
Marco noticed each one.
Luca lifted a pen beside the unsigned marriage trust.
“Before I sign,” he said, “there is one correction.”
Nobody moved.
He turned the document.
“The beneficiary schedule is incomplete.”
A board member named Adrian Cole stood near the fireplace.
“Luca, this is hardly the time.”
Luca looked at him.
“That sentence interests me.”
Cole stopped.
Emma watched three other guests glance toward the side door.
Marco quietly closed it.
Belini stepped forward.
“My father’s network used this family for twenty-eight years.”
Shock moved through the room.
One man immediately reached for his phone.
A guard removed it.
Belini continued.
“They murdered Elena Russo. They falsified medical records. They stole money. They used my engagement to Luca to access the final trust.”
Someone whispered, “She’s confessing.”
“Yes,” Belini said. “I am.”
Then she looked at Emma.
“And I tried to frame an innocent woman for it.”
Emma did not look away.
Luca placed the black data drive on the table.
“This was sewn into Belini’s wedding dress.”
The room changed.
The same guests who had laughed when Emma wore it now understood why.
Luca looked across them.
“One of you told Bellori the drive had been found before midnight.”
Silence.
“That person also warned him Vittorio had returned.”
A glass fell near the fireplace.
Adrian Cole stepped backward.
Marco moved.
Cole ran.
He made it six feet.
When Marco stopped him, a folded cemetery map dropped from Cole’s jacket.
Belini looked at Luca.
“That’s him.”
Cole shouted, “You don’t know what you’re protecting!”
Luca approached slowly.
“I know exactly what I’m protecting.”
His gaze shifted to Emma.
“Choice.”
The cemetery safe was opened at seven forty-two.
Inside were the twenty-three names.
Bank records.
Payments.
Signed orders.
Photographs.
Everything Carlo Bellini had kept as leverage became evidence against his own organization.
By midnight, five arrests had been made.
Seven warrants were active.
Three Moretti employees had disappeared.
Vittorio looked at Luca in the study.
“This will weaken the family.”
Luca poured two drinks.
“No.”
He handed one to his father.
“It will weaken what should never have been part of the family.”
Vittorio studied him.
Elena had been right.
The boy had not become his father.
Not completely.
Then Marco entered with one final document recovered from Carlo’s safe.
He placed it in front of Emma.
It was Elena Russo’s completed succession transfer.
Signed.
Witnessed.
Legally valid.
The custodial rights were hers.
May you like
Emma stared at the page.
For the first time, nobody in the room knew what she would choose.
