Chapter 8 - Elena’s Last Recording

The tape hissed for six seconds before Elena Russo spoke.

Emma recognized her immediately.

Not the words.

The breathing.

A sound memory from childhood.

Her mother trying not to let pain reach her voice.

“Emma,” the recording began, “if you ever hear this, then Vittorio failed to keep you away from all of this.”

Vittorio looked down.

Emma did not.

Elena continued.

“I need you to know one thing first. I did not choose the Moretti family over you. Everything I did was to leave you a way out.”

Emma covered her mouth.

Luca stood beside her but did not touch her.

The tape continued.

Elena explained the succession agreement.

The accounts were camouflage.

The money existed, but its purpose was to draw attention.

The real inheritance was the evidence.

Names.

Payments.

Judges.

Companies.

Kill orders.

Medical records.

Enough to destroy both Moretti and Bellini men who had built fortunes by assuming nobody would ever assemble the full picture.

Then Elena said something that changed Luca’s expression.

“Luca is a child now. If he grows into his father’s world, do not assume he becomes his father.”

Vittorio closed his eyes.

“If one day Emma meets him, let her judge him by what he does when nobody is forcing him.”

The room went silent except for the tape.

Elena’s voice weakened.

“Vittorio, if you survive this, you owe your son the truth.”

Emma looked at him.

The older man did not defend himself.

The final words came softly.

“And Emma... never let anyone convince you that being poor meant being powerless. I trusted you before you were old enough to understand why.”

The tape clicked off.

Emma cried without making a sound.

Luca finally placed one hand over hers.

She let him.

Only for a moment.

Then she looked at Vittorio.

“She told you to tell him the truth.”

“Yes.”

“You did the opposite.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Vittorio looked at Luca.

“Because after Elena died, I discovered Carlo had people inside my own security. I believed the only way to protect Luca was to become useless to them.”

“So you died.”

“I disappeared.”

“You died to me,” Luca said.

Vittorio’s face tightened.

“Yes.”

No one softened it for him.

Marco entered with new information.

Bellori had finally started talking.

Not because he was afraid of Luca.

Because he was afraid of Belini.

Luca looked at her.

Belini laughed bitterly.

“That is almost flattering.”

Marco continued.

“Bellori says there is one more copy of the evidence. Carlo Bellini created it before he died.”

“Where?”

“He says Belini knows.”

Everyone looked at her.

She stared at the floor.

“Carlo’s mausoleum.”

Emma frowned.

“A grave?”

“A safe behind the memorial wall.”

Luca’s expression hardened.

“And what is in it?”

Belini looked at Vittorio.

“The names of every person still alive who helped my father.”

Vittorio went still.

“How many?”

“Twenty-three.”

Marco checked Bellori’s phone records.

Three of those names were current Moretti employees.

Two worked in Luca’s legitimate companies.

One sat on the board of Moretti Maritime.

The conspiracy was not history.

It was payroll.

Luca looked at Belini.

“Why keep the list?”

“Because my father taught me never to destroy leverage.”

“And why tell me now?”

She met his eyes.

“Because Matteo took a child.”

Emma’s expression did not soften.

Belini continued.

“I knew what I was doing to you. I knew what I was doing to Emma. I can’t pretend otherwise.”

She looked toward Sophie asleep on the sofa in the adjoining room.

“But there is a line even my father did not teach me to cross.”

Luca said nothing.

Belini gave him the cemetery code.

Then she removed her engagement ring and placed it on the table.

“I assume I won’t need this.”

Luca looked at the ring.

“No.”

She nodded once.

May you like

The engagement ended without shouting.

Which somehow made it final.
