Chapter 10 - Claire's Empty Chair

Dominic called the estate before anyone could speak.
Naomi put the secure line on speaker.
A guard answered.
"Control."
"Status on Luca."
"Family floor secure. Luca Moretti is with Head Housekeeper Carter's daughter and two officers."
Sophia closed her eyes in relief.
"Confirm visually," Dominic ordered.
A pause.
Then the guard returned.
"Visual confirmation. Both children safe."
Dominic looked at Vittorio.
"Claire isn't there."
Vittorio's face remained tense.
"She doesn't need to be."
"Explain."
Vittorio glanced at the directors.
Dominic said, "They can hear."
"You want your family's filth in a boardroom?"
"I want it where witnesses exist."
Vittorio gave a bitter smile.
"Isabelle taught you that."
"Too late."
Vittorio sat.
"Claire came to me after Isabelle died. She blamed you."
Dominic frowned.
"For what?"
"For everything."
Sophia watched him.
Vittorio continued.
"She believed Isabelle died because she married into this family. She believed Luca would be raised inside the same system."
"She never said that."
"Not to you."
"Why would she work with Leon?"
"Because Leon helped her prove the trust could be taken from you."
Dominic's eyes narrowed.
"The continuity clause."
"Yes."
Julian, now in the room with Bellamy under guard, spoke.
"Claire was one of the original trustees."
Vittorio nodded.
"She wanted Luca's shares controlled outside Dominic's reach."
Sophia said, "That still doesn't explain killing him."
Vittorio looked at her.
"No. It doesn't."
Dominic said, "You named Claire, not me."
"I said Leon didn't work for me alone."
"How long?"
"Two years."
"Doing what?"
"Information. Security schedules. Financial records."
Marcus asked, "Why would Claire trust one of your men?"
"Because she paid him more."
Naomi's phone vibrated.
She looked at the screen.
"Claire's apartment is empty."
Dominic's jaw tightened.
"Phone?"
"Off."
"Travel?"
"No registered departures."
Vittorio said, "Check Isabelle's old apartment."
Dominic stared.
"She sold it."
"No. The family company bought it through a holding entity."
Julian frowned.
"I didn't know that."
"Claire arranged it."
Sophia asked, "Why?"
Vittorio looked at Dominic.
"Because she never let Isabelle go."
The old apartment was on the Upper East Side, three blocks from the park.
Police arrived with Dominic's legal team and found the door unlocked.
The living room had been preserved like a private museum.
Photographs of Isabelle covered one wall.
Newspaper clippings about the crash filled another.
Luca's childhood pictures were arranged by year.
Sophia whispered, "This is not grief."
Dominic said nothing.
Naomi found a desk filled with folders.
One was labeled DOMINIC.
Another VITTORIO.
Another LUCA.
Marcus opened the Luca file.
Inside were school schedules, pediatric appointments, photographs from public events and copies of household staffing charts.
Sophia felt sick.
"She was tracking him."
Julian opened another folder.
"Not just tracking."
He held up a printed legal memo.
"If Dominic Moretti is found unfit, custody may pass to maternal next of kin."
Dominic took the paper.
"Claire wanted custody."
Marcus said, "Maybe."
Sophia looked at the wall.
"Or she wanted to convince herself she was saving him."
Naomi called from the bedroom.
"You need to see this."
A suitcase lay open on the bed.
Inside were cash, passports, a child's sweater in Luca's size and a framed photograph of Isabelle holding infant Luca.
Dominic's expression turned hard.
"She planned to take him."
Marcus said, "Kidnap, maybe. But why poison the cake?"
Julian looked at the files.
"Unless the poison was never Claire's plan."
Sophia turned.
"What do you mean?"
"Vittorio ordered a fake security breach. Claire learned about it through Leon. She could have changed the packet."
Dominic looked at him.
"Why kill Luca if she wanted custody?"
Julian did not answer.
Sophia did.
"Unless she thought death was better than becoming a Moretti."
Silence.
Dominic stared at her.
Sophia looked uncomfortable.
"I don't know her. I'm saying grief can become something else."
A phone rang inside the desk.
Everyone froze.
Naomi found an old flip phone taped beneath a drawer.
The screen showed one incoming number.
UNKNOWN.
Dominic answered.
"Claire."
For several seconds, only breathing came through.
Then Claire's voice.
"Is Luca safe?"
Dominic's expression hardened.
"Where are you?"
"Is he safe?"
"Yes."
Claire exhaled.
"Then Leon failed."
Sophia felt the room go cold.
Dominic said, "You poisoned the cake."
"No."
"Don't lie to me."
"I did not poison it."
"You knew."
"I knew Leon intended to turn Vittorio's stupid demonstration into something real."
"And you let it happen."
"No."
"Then why didn't you call me?"
Claire's voice broke.
"Because I was trying to stop him without losing the only evidence I had."
Dominic looked at Naomi.
She was tracing the call.
"What evidence?"
"That Leon killed Isabelle."
Dominic went still.
Claire continued.
"Vittorio ordered the route change. He ordered Owen to scare her. But Leon sabotaged the car."
"Why?"
"Because Isabelle discovered Leon was stealing from Vittorio's shell accounts."
Vittorio, listening over speaker from the Foundation club, whispered a curse.
Claire said, "Leon was using your uncle's network to build his own operation. Isabelle found payments Vittorio didn't know about."
Dominic looked at Isabelle's ledger in Marcus's hands.
"Vittorio was stealing from the company. Leon was stealing from Vittorio."
"Yes."
"How do you know?"
"I have his records."
"Where are you?"
"Somewhere he can't reach me."
Naomi shook her head: trace incomplete.
Dominic said, "You told Leon about Luca's trust."
Claire was silent.
"Answer me."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"I needed him to talk."
"You gave a killer information about my son."
"I didn't know he would target Luca."
"Your apartment has my son's schedules."
"Because I was planning to take him if you were arrested."
"Arrested for what?"
"For the things you used to do."
Dominic's face hardened.
Claire continued.
"Isabelle wanted you out of the criminal side. You wouldn't leave. She died trying to clean up what surrounded Luca."
"Do not use her to justify this."
"I'm not."
"You watched my son for years."
"I watched you."
"Through him."
Claire began crying quietly.
"I loved him."
Sophia looked at Dominic.
His eyes closed for a moment.
Then he said, "Where is Leon?"
"I don't know."
"Where is your evidence?"
A pause.
"In the Foundation archive."
Dominic looked toward the file room down the hallway.
Julian muttered, "Of course."
Claire said, "Isabelle hid the ledger. I hid the copies of Leon's accounts in the place Vittorio thought he controlled."
Vittorio's voice came through another phone on the table.
"Which archive section?"
Claire heard him.
"So you're with him."
"Where, Claire?" Vittorio demanded.
"Do you admit what you did?"
Vittorio closed his eyes.
Dominic said, "This is not a negotiation."
Claire's voice sharpened.
"It has been a negotiation for three years."
Sophia suddenly noticed a faint sound behind Claire's voice.
A repeating electronic chime.
She leaned toward the phone.
"Claire."
Silence.
"Claire, where are you?"
"Who is that?"
"Sophia."
"The housekeeper."
"Yes."
"What do you want?"
"That sound behind you. Is that an elevator?"
Claire stopped breathing.
Naomi looked at Sophia.
Sophia continued.
"It chimes twice every few seconds."
Claire whispered, "It's a freight lift."
Julian's face changed.
"The Foundation building has one freight lift."
Dominic turned toward the rear corridor.
The archive level.
Claire said, "Dominic, don't—"
A crash came through the phone.
Then Leon Grady's voice.
"Found you."
The line went dead.
Naomi drew her weapon.
"Archive level now."
They moved.
The freight elevator doors on the basement floor were open.
A woman's shoe lay beside them.
Dominic ran past the archive shelves.
"Claire!"
A metal door slammed farther down the corridor.
Marcus pointed.
"Records vault."
Naomi tried the keypad.
"Locked from inside."
Dominic pounded the door.
"Claire!"
Leon shouted from the other side.
"Back away!"
Sophia heard Claire gasp.
Dominic's voice dropped.
"Leon."
"Everyone back."
"What do you want?"
"A car. Clear route to the heliport."
Vittorio had arrived upstairs under police escort and was now connected by radio.
He spoke into Naomi's channel.
"Leon, listen to me."
Leon laughed.
"You still think you own me."
Vittorio's face hardened.
"I made you."
"And I made your money disappear."
Dominic said, "Open the door and walk out."
"Not without the records."
Julian whispered to Marcus.
"The fire-suppression access."
Marcus nodded and disappeared.
Sophia watched Dominic keep Leon talking.
"You killed Isabelle."
Silence.
Then Leon said, "She should have minded her family."
Dominic's hands curled.
Sophia touched his arm.
He looked at her.
She shook her head once.
Do not give Leon what he wanted.
Dominic inhaled.
"My wife beat you three years ago."
Leon laughed.
"She's dead."
"And you still spent three years chasing what she hid."
The laugh stopped.
Dominic continued.
"She made you afraid."
A loud bang came from inside.
Claire screamed.
Dominic moved toward the door.
Naomi blocked him.
Then Marcus's voice came through the radio.
"Access panel open. I have eyes."
Dominic waited.
Marcus whispered, "Claire is behind shelving. Leon is at the records cabinet. He does not have a clear line on her."
Naomi mouthed, Ready?
Dominic nodded.
Marcus entered through the service access with two officers.
The vault erupted in shouts.
"Police! Hands!"
A metal object hit the floor.
Leon cursed.
Claire screamed again.
Then silence.
Naomi opened the main door.
Leon Grady was face-down on the concrete with officers restraining him.
Claire sat against a shelf, shaking but alive.
Dominic stopped several feet away.
She looked up at him.
"I'm sorry."
He stared at her.
"For which part?"
Her face crumpled.
"For believing I could fix Isabelle's death by controlling Luca's life."
Dominic said nothing.
Marcus held up a sealed archive box.
"Found the records."
Julian opened the lid.
Inside were bank statements, copied access logs and a small digital recorder.
Claire looked at it.
"Play the last file."
Dominic pressed the button.
Leon's voice filled the vault from a recording made weeks earlier.
"I changed the packet. Vittorio wanted his little test. I wanted the heir gone. No heir, no Moretti future, and every faction tears itself apart."
Another voice answered.
Claire's.
"You'll never get near Luca."
Leon laughed.
"I already have."
The recording ended.
Dominic looked at Leon.
The truth was finally beginning to take a shape no one could deny.
Vittorio had built the corrupt system.
Bellamy had concealed it.
Owen had served it.
Claire had manipulated it.
But Leon had turned it into murder.
May you like
And there was still one final question left.
How many people had paid for Isabelle's death because everyone around her had believed one more secret would keep the family safe?
