Chapter 5 - Section Nine

Evelyn Moretti was missing.

Her purse remained in the townhouse.

Her car remained in the garage.

Her phone lay on the kitchen counter with the battery removed.

Nothing obvious had been stolen except one page from the trust file.

Marcus ordered a full search while Dominic stood in Evelyn's study holding the folder she had left behind.

Sophia watched him read Section Nine three times.

Finally she asked, "What does it say?"

Dominic did not answer.

Marcus entered from the hallway.

"No sign of forced entry. Bedroom untouched. Housekeeper hasn't been here since Thursday because Evelyn gave the staff the weekend off."

"Driver?"

"Missing."

Dominic handed him the document.

Marcus read silently.

His eyes widened.

"That's real?"

"Apparently."

Sophia said, "Would someone please tell me?"

Dominic looked at her.

"If Luca dies before his eighteenth birthday, the voting shares Isabelle placed in trust do not return to me."

"Who gets them?"

"No individual."

"Then who?"

"A continuity trust."

Marcus handed the document back.

"Controlled by three trustees."

Sophia waited.

Dominic named them.

"Julian Cross. Claire Beaumont. Vittorio Moretti."

Sophia stared.

"Your uncle."

"Yes."

"And Mrs. Moretti's sister."

"Yes."

"And Julian."

"Yes."

"What happens if all three disagree?"

"Two votes control."

Marcus added, "Which means any two of them could control the largest voting block in Moretti Holdings."

Sophia felt sick.

"So Luca's death would make them powerful."

Dominic's face was hard.

"It would make them custodians. In theory."

"In theory?"

"Isabelle designed the trust to protect Luca if something happened to both of us. I never saw this amendment."

Marcus pointed to the signature page.

"Your signature is here."

Dominic looked at it.

"It's mine."

Sophia frowned.

"Then how did you not see it?"

"I signed a package of estate documents the week before Isabelle died."

"Without reading them?"

Dominic's expression turned colder.

"My wife and my attorney told me they were routine tax changes."

"Which attorney?"

A voice came from the doorway.

"Mine."

Everyone turned.

An elderly man in a charcoal overcoat stood between two security officers.

Arthur Bellamy had been the Moretti family's estate lawyer for more than thirty years.

Dominic stared at him.

"You were told to come to the estate."

"I was. Then Marcus's team called and said you were here."

Dominic held up the document.

"Explain Section Nine."

Bellamy removed his glasses.

"Isabelle requested it."

"Why?"

"She believed your business environment created risks for Luca."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the answer she gave me."

"Who drafted it?"

"I did."

"Who reviewed it?"

"Isabelle."

"Who else?"

Bellamy hesitated.

Dominic's voice sharpened.

"Who else?"

"Vittorio."

Marcus stepped forward.

"Why him?"

"Because at that time he was chairman of the family governance committee."

Dominic laughed once without humor.

"Family governance. A pretty name for control."

Bellamy looked uncomfortable.

"Dominic—"

"Did Isabelle know Vittorio would be one of the trustees?"

"Yes."

"Did she choose him?"

"No."

The room went silent.

Sophia asked, "Then who did?"

Bellamy looked at Dominic.

"You did."

Dominic's expression did not change.

"I did not."

"Your signed instruction named him."

"Show me."

Bellamy opened his briefcase and removed a copied letter.

Dominic read it.

The signature resembled his perfectly.

He looked at Bellamy.

"Forgery."

"I had no reason to believe that."

Marcus said, "When did you receive it?"

"Four days before Isabelle died."

"By email?"

"Hand delivery."

"Who delivered it?"

Bellamy thought.

"A security employee."

Dominic already knew the answer.

"Owen Pike."

Bellamy's face changed.

"Yes."

Sophia closed her eyes.

The same man who had entered Isabelle's study.

The same man who had been terminated for accessing route schedules.

The same man who had poisoned Luca's birthday cake.

Dominic asked, "Why was Owen trusted with legal correspondence?"

"He said he was delivering it from your office."

Marcus took the letter.

"Where is the original?"

"Firm archive."

"Secure it now."

Bellamy called his office from a protected phone.

After a short conversation, he looked worse.

"The original file box was checked out six months ago."

"By whom?" Dominic asked.

"My records say Evelyn Moretti."

Sophia looked toward the handwritten note.

"She found out."

Bellamy nodded slowly.

"Maybe."

Dominic pointed to Section Nine.

"What happens if one trustee dies or resigns?"

"Remaining trustees appoint a replacement."

"What if Luca dies and the trustees activate the continuity provision?"

"They assume control until Luca's twenty-fifth birthday."

Sophia frowned.

"But if Luca is dead, there is no twenty-fifth birthday."

Bellamy looked at her.

"Correct."

"Then how does it end?"

"It doesn't."

Dominic's eyes became flat.

"Permanent control."

Bellamy nodded.

Sophia whispered, "So somebody wrote a trap into the trust."

"Yes," Dominic said.

Marcus radioed a forensic team to secure Bellamy's archives.

Then another call came through.

"Hale."

A guard's voice answered.

"We found Evelyn's driver."

"Where?"

"Hospital in Newark."

Marcus looked at Dominic.

"Alive?"

"Yes. Admitted under another name after a traffic collision early this morning."

"Condition?"

"Conscious."

Dominic was already walking.

At the hospital, Evelyn's driver, Thomas Vane, had a bandaged forehead and a police officer outside his room.

He looked terrified when Dominic entered.

"Mr. Moretti."

"Where is Evelyn?"

Thomas swallowed.

"I don't know."

"Try again."

"I swear."

Marcus closed the door.

Thomas looked at Sophia, then back at Dominic.

"She told me to drive."

"Where?"

"To the old foundation warehouse in Red Hook."

"When?"

"About four this morning."

"Why?"

"She said someone had contacted her."

"Who?"

"She wouldn't tell me."

"What happened?"

"A black SUV followed us off the bridge."

Marcus asked, "Plate?"

"Covered."

"Then?"

"Mrs. Moretti told me to pull into a gas station. Before I could, another car cut us off. I swerved. We hit the divider."

"Where was Evelyn after the crash?"

Thomas's eyes filled.

"When I woke up, she was gone."

Dominic leaned closer.

"Taken?"

"I think so."

"Did you see anyone?"

"One man."

"Describe him."

"Tall. Gray coat. Gold ring."

Sophia's pulse jumped.

"What kind of ring?"

Thomas looked at her.

"A lion."

Marcus exchanged a look with Dominic.

Owen Pike had worn the same symbol.

Dominic asked, "Have you seen that ring before?"

Thomas hesitated.

"Yes."

"On whom?"

"I don't want to say."

Dominic's voice dropped.

"Thomas, someone tried to murder my child."

The driver stared at him.

"On Mr. Vittorio's private security men."

The room became silent.

Marcus said, "Not Vittorio himself?"

"No. His old guard. Years ago they all wore them."

Sophia asked, "Owen Pike?"

Thomas nodded.

"He was one of them before he transferred to Isabelle's detail."

Dominic stepped back.

So the ring was not a random ornament.

It was an old loyalty mark.

Vittorio's men.

Marcus said, "We bring Vittorio in."

Dominic looked through the window.

"No."

"No?"

"If he has Evelyn, confronting him without proof tells him exactly what we know."

Sophia said, "And if he hurts her?"

Dominic's jaw tightened.

"We find her first."

Thomas grabbed Dominic's sleeve.

"There's something else."

Dominic looked down at his hand.

Thomas released him.

"Sorry."

"Speak."

"Mrs. Moretti gave me an envelope before we left."

"Where is it?"

"In the car. Hidden under the driver's seat."

Marcus immediately called the police impound lot.

Two hours later, the envelope was delivered under escort.

Inside was a flash drive and a handwritten letter.

Dominic read the first line aloud.

"If you're reading this, Vittorio knows I found Isabelle's second ledger."

Sophia looked at him.

"What ledger?"

Dominic continued.

"Isabelle kept records of unauthorized transfers, shell companies and payments tied to family security."

Marcus said, "Payments to Owen."

Dominic inserted the flash drive into an isolated laptop.

It contained only one audio file.

He pressed play.

Isabelle's voice filled the room.

"If anything happens to me, do not trust the accident report."

Dominic closed his eyes.

For the first time since the birthday party, his control cracked.

The voice of his dead wife continued.

"Vittorio changed the trust instructions. Owen delivered the forged letter. I confronted them tonight. I don't know whether Julian is involved. I don't know whether Claire knows. But Luca is the leverage. Dominic will think the danger is aimed at him."

A pause.

Then Isabelle said the words that changed everything.

"It isn't."

The recording ended.

Sophia looked at Dominic.

Marcus looked at the screen.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Finally Dominic whispered, "She knew."

Sophia said, "And she tried to warn you."

Dominic's eyes opened.

"Three years ago."

Marcus asked, "What's the second ledger?"

Dominic looked at Evelyn's letter.

"Evelyn says she found it."

"Where?"

Dominic read the final line.

"Where Isabelle hid the things she loved from men who believed they owned everything."

Sophia frowned.

"Do you know what that means?"

Dominic looked at the silver-framed photograph of Isabelle and Luca that Evelyn had brought from the townhouse.

"No."

Then Sophia noticed the background of the photograph.

Isabelle stood on the west terrace, holding infant Luca.

Behind her was an old stone fountain shaped like a swan.

Sophia's eyes widened.

"I do."

Dominic turned.

"The west terrace."

"What about it?"

"Mrs. Moretti used to hide Luca's birthday presents in the maintenance cupboard under that fountain because you never went there before breakfast."

Dominic stared at her.

"How do you know?"

"I wrapped them."

Marcus was already calling the estate.

Dominic took the photograph.

For three years he had avoided the west terrace because every stone reminded him of Isabelle.

Now the place he could not bear to visit might contain the evidence she had died trying to protect.

"Back to the house," he said.

Sophia looked at him.

"And Vittorio?"

Dominic slipped the flash drive into his inside pocket.

"Not yet."

May you like

His expression turned cold.

"First we find out what my wife knew."
