Chapter 8 - The Wrong Voice

Julian did not run.
That fact became the first thing Dominic distrusted.
When Naomi called the estate and ordered Julian held, he reportedly handed over his phone, wallet and keys without argument. He then asked for coffee.
"That's either innocence or arrogance," Marcus said.
Dominic stood in the secure interview room with Sophia.
Owen Pike watched them through the glass.
Sophia shook her head.
"I heard only a few words. I never saw who was speaking."
Owen said, "It was Cross."
Dominic's voice stayed level.
"Why were you there?"
"Vittorio sent me."
"To do what?"
"Take the trust copy from Isabelle's desk."
Sophia asked, "And Julian?"
"He got there first."
"Why?"
"I don't know."
"You expect us to believe that?"
Owen looked at her.
"I expect you to believe what I can prove."
Dominic leaned closer to the glass.
"Start proving."
Owen took a breath.
"Three years ago, Vittorio told me Isabelle had stolen internal records and planned to hand them to prosecutors. He said she was confused, emotional and dangerous to the family."
Sophia said, "And you believed him."
"Back then? Mostly."
Dominic's jaw tightened.
"Continue."
"I was supposed to retrieve the ledger and the trust copy. When I reached the west corridor, I heard Isabelle arguing with Cross."
"Exact words."
Owen closed his eyes.
"She said, 'If Dominic finds out what you changed, he'll destroy you.' Cross said, 'He'll never find out if we fix it before morning.'"
Sophia stared.
That was the voice.
Dominic asked, "Fix what?"
"I thought the trust."
"You thought?"
"I didn't hear the beginning."
"What happened next?"
"Cross opened the door. He saw me."
"And?"
"He told me to get out."
"Did Isabelle?"
"She said, 'Tell Vittorio the ledger is no longer in this room.'"
Dominic's eyes narrowed.
"So she knew you worked for him."
"Yes."
"Then why didn't you take the ledger?"
"Because it wasn't there."
Sophia asked, "Did you threaten me in the corridor?"
Owen looked ashamed.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"I didn't know what you'd heard."
"You told me people kept jobs by ignoring doors."
"I wanted you quiet."
"That worked for three years."
Owen lowered his eyes.
Dominic said, "What happened the next day?"
Owen was silent.
"Owen."
"I changed the route file."
Sophia stopped breathing.
Dominic's expression became lethal.
"You caused the crash."
"No."
"You changed my wife's route."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Vittorio said paparazzi knew the normal route. He ordered a secondary route."
"Did you sabotage the car?"
"No."
"Did you know someone would?"
"No."
Dominic struck the table with one palm.
The sound cracked through the room.
Owen flinched.
Marcus stepped closer to Dominic.
"Keep him talking."
Dominic's breathing slowed.
"Who serviced the car?"
"Fleet garage."
"Who had access?"
"Security. Drivers. Maintenance."
"Vittorio's people?"
"Yes."
"Julian?"
"No."
Dominic looked at Sophia.
That mattered.
Sophia asked, "Why poison Luca now?"
Owen's face changed.
"I didn't."
Dominic laughed without humor.
"We have you on camera."
"I put powder on the cake. I didn't know it was poison."
"That's your defense?"
"It's the truth."
"What did you think it was?"
"A harmless marker."
Marcus frowned.
"For what?"
"A security test. Vittorio told me Dominic had become careless and Luca was exposed. He wanted to prove the estate could be breached."
Dominic stared.
"You expect me to believe my uncle hired you to contaminate my son's birthday cake as an audit?"
"No. I expect you to believe that's what he told me."
Sophia said, "Where did the packet come from?"
"Owen's expression tightened."
"Leon Grady gave it to me."
"Vittorio's driver," Marcus said.
Owen nodded.
"He said sprinkle it on the decorative frosting, then leave."
"Did you open it before?"
"No."
"Did you know a child might eat the frosting?"
"He said the cake would be stopped before serving."
Sophia's voice turned cold.
"But you still put unknown powder on a child's cake."
Owen looked at her.
"I know."
"No. You know now."
He looked away.
Dominic said, "Who was supposed to stop the cake?"
"Bellamy."
That explained Bellamy's presence.
"He knew?" Sophia asked.
"Not about the powder. He knew there was a security demonstration."
Dominic's eyes narrowed.
"Who else?"
"Vittorio. Leon. Me."
"Julian?"
"No."
"Claire?"
"No."
"Evelyn?"
"No."
Marcus said, "Then who converted your harmless packet into poison?"
Owen shook his head.
"I don't know."
Sophia stared at him.
"Why surrender?"
"Because Leon tried to kill me."
Dominic watched him.
"When?"
"Last night. He told me Vittorio wanted me at the country house. On the way, a truck tried to force me off the road."
"Maybe an accident."
"It followed me for nine miles."
"So you ran."
"Yes."
"And went to a motel."
"I called a state police number from a store."
Marcus frowned.
"Why state police instead of us?"
Owen looked at Dominic.
"Because I didn't know if his security still had Vittorio's people inside."
Marcus's face tightened.
Dominic looked at him.
The planted account suddenly looked even more deliberate.
Sophia said, "Why ask for me?"
"Because you can prove Cross was in the study."
"I can prove a voice was there. That's all."
Owen leaned forward.
"Then ask Cross what he changed."
Dominic ended the interview.
Julian was waiting in the estate conference room when they returned.
He stood as Dominic entered.
"Did Owen name me?"
Dominic stopped.
"You knew he would."
Julian gave a tired smile.
"I knew he might."
Sophia said, "Were you in Isabelle's study the night before she died?"
"Yes."
Dominic's eyes hardened.
"You lied."
"I omitted."
Marcus snorted.
"That's a lawyer's word for lying."
Julian looked at Dominic.
"I was trying to protect Isabelle's plan."
"She's dead."
"I know."
"Then explain."
Julian sat.
"Isabelle discovered Section Nine had been altered. She came to me because I had access to the board governance files."
"What did you change?"
"Trustee appointment records."
Dominic stared at him.
"You changed the trust?"
"I changed them back."
Silence.
Julian continued.
"The continuity trust originally named Claire, me and an independent fiduciary. Vittorio substituted himself for the fiduciary using your forged instruction."
Bellamy had said Vittorio controlled the change, but not that Julian had tried to reverse it.
Dominic asked, "Did Isabelle know?"
"Yes. She asked me to correct the records quietly while she gathered proof."
Sophia said, "Then why did she tell you, 'If Dominic finds out what you changed, he'll destroy you'?"
Julian looked at her.
"Because I had forged Vittorio's signature on a corrective board consent."
Marcus stared.
"You committed fraud to undo fraud."
"Yes."
Dominic's expression was unreadable.
"And 'he'll never find out'?"
"I said, 'He'll never find out if we fix it before morning.'"
Sophia closed her eyes.
The sentence matched Owen's account.
Julian continued.
"I was arrogant. I thought I could repair the trust and present Dominic with a clean result."
Dominic's voice was flat.
"Everyone in my life apparently believed the safest plan was to hide things from me."
Julian did not argue.
"Yes."
"Did you know Owen was in the corridor?"
"I saw him leave."
"Why didn't you tell Marcus?"
"Because Marcus's predecessor reported to Vittorio."
Marcus frowned.
"My predecessor was Samuel Keene."
Julian nodded.
"Exactly."
Marcus's face changed.
"Keene hired Owen."
"And Keene died two years ago," Dominic said.
Julian nodded.
"In a boating accident."
Sophia looked at Dominic.
"Another accident."
No one commented.
Dominic asked Julian, "Why didn't you tell me after Isabelle died?"
"I tried."
"When?"
"The night of the funeral."
Dominic stared at him.
Julian's voice softened.
"You were drunk. You had just broken a man's jaw for mentioning her name. You told me if anyone had caused the crash, you would kill every person connected to it."
Dominic looked away.
Julian said, "Isabelle's letter told me the opposite. She wanted evidence, not vengeance."
"You read her letter?"
"Not the one you found. She left me a separate note."
"Where is it?"
"I burned it."
Marcus cursed.
Julian looked at him.
"It named no one. It told me to protect Luca and make the company legitimate enough that Vittorio could not control it from the shadows."
Dominic sat.
"So for three years you changed the company."
"Yes."
"You pushed outside audits."
"Yes."
"You closed private security contracts."
"Yes."
"You made me sell three cash businesses."
"Yes."
Dominic gave a humorless laugh.
"I thought you were becoming boring."
"I was trying to keep you out of prison."
Sophia almost smiled despite herself.
Dominic did not.
"Why did Evelyn trust you?"
"Because she knew what Isabelle was doing."
"Did she send the warning about the camera?"
"I think so."
"Where is she?"
"I don't know."
Naomi entered suddenly.
"We have movement at Vittorio's country property."
Dominic stood.
"What kind?"
"Two vehicles left ten minutes ago. One is Leon Grady's SUV."
"Other?"
"Medical transport van."
Sophia's stomach tightened.
"Evelyn."
Naomi nodded.
"Possible."
Marcus said, "Track both."
"Already doing it."
Dominic looked at Julian.
"You're coming."
Julian raised an eyebrow.
"Am I still a suspect?"
"Absolutely."
"Good. I'd worry if you learned trust overnight."
Naomi's radio sounded.
She listened.
"Van turned south. SUV continued west."
Dominic asked, "Destination?"
"Unknown."
Then another message.
Naomi's face hardened.
"The van is registered to Saint Matthew's Hospice."
Sophia looked at Dominic.
"Why would they move Evelyn to hospice?"
Julian answered first.
"Because a woman in hospice can die without surprising anyone."
Dominic's eyes turned cold.
"Not today."
They left the estate with state police units following at a distance.
For the first time, Dominic had a living witness, a corrected version of Isabelle's last night, and proof that Julian's lie was not the lie he had expected.
But one question had become more dangerous than all the others.
If Owen believed the powder was harmless, and Bellamy believed the event was a security demonstration, then someone had changed the plan.
May you like
Someone wanted Luca truly dead.
And that person might not be Vittorio.
