Chapter 11 - The Last Family Meeting

The final meeting took place in daylight.

Dominic chose the Foundation boardroom, not the estate.

There were windows on three sides. Federal investigators occupied the adjoining conference room. Two outside attorneys recorded the session. Every document placed on the table had already been copied to independent counsel.

No private family solution remained possible.

Vittorio sat at one end.

Evelyn sat at the other.

Claire sat beside her attorney.

Bellamy sat alone.

Julian and Marcus sat on Dominic's side of the table.

Sophia had not planned to attend.

Evelyn insisted.

"Your daughter started this," she said. "You should see where it ends."

Sophia answered, "My daughter knocked over a cake."

"Exactly."

The first investigator entered.

"We are ready."

Dominic nodded.

He looked at Vittorio.

"Start with the trust."

Vittorio's face seemed older than it had two days earlier.

"I forged Dominic's instruction through Owen."

Bellamy closed his eyes.

Vittorio continued.

"I wanted control of the continuity trust."

"Why?" the investigator asked.

"Because I believed Dominic was destroying the family."

Dominic said, "Meaning?"

"Moving too quickly. Fighting old partners. Closing profitable operations."

Julian replied, "Illegal operations."

Vittorio looked at him.

"Profitable ones."

Dominic's mouth tightened.

"So Luca was leverage."

"Not to be killed."

"But his death made your control permanent."

"I knew."

"Did that bother you?"

Vittorio looked at Evelyn.

"More than you think."

Evelyn's expression remained cold.

"Not enough to remove the clause."

Vittorio said nothing.

The investigator turned to Bellamy.

"You knew the instruction was false?"

"Not initially."

"When did you learn?"

"The day before Isabelle's death."

"And you did not report it."

"No."

"Why?"

"I believed I could resolve it privately."

Sophia looked at him.

"That sentence should be carved over the door of this family."

Evelyn almost smiled.

Bellamy looked ashamed.

The investigator asked Claire to explain her surveillance of Luca.

Claire spoke slowly.

"After Isabelle died, I believed Dominic would either be killed or prosecuted. I wanted a custody case ready."

"Did you intend to kidnap the child?"

"No."

Marcus pointed to the suitcase.

"Cash, passports and Luca's clothing."

Claire closed her eyes.

"I considered leaving with him."

"Without Dominic's consent."

"Yes."

Sophia watched Dominic.

He did not react.

The investigator asked, "Did you know Leon intended to poison Luca?"

"Not until the day of the party."

"How did you learn?"

"Leon sent me a photograph of the packet and wrote, 'Tonight the bloodline ends.'"

"Why didn't you call police?"

"I tried to reach Bellamy and Evelyn. I also sent an anonymous warning to event security."

Marcus frowned.

"We found no warning."

Claire looked confused.

"I sent it to the emergency account."

Marcus asked, "Which address?"

She gave it.

Marcus stared at Naomi.

"That account was deactivated eighteen months ago."

Claire went pale.

"I didn't know."

Dominic said quietly, "You could have called me."

"I was afraid you'd confront Leon before I had enough to prove Isabelle's murder."

Sophia shook her head.

"There it is again."

Claire looked at her.

"What?"

"The secret that was supposed to protect someone."

No one answered.

The investigator turned to Owen, appearing by secure video from custody.

"Did you know the packet contained poison?"

"No."

"Did you understand you were placing an unknown substance on a child's birthday cake?"

"Yes."

"Then your ignorance has limits."

Owen nodded.

"I know."

"Who gave you the packet?"

"Leon."

"Who authorized the original security demonstration?"

"Vittorio."

Vittorio said, "I told him the marker would be detected before serving."

Dominic looked at him.

"You built a demonstration around contaminating my son's food."

"It was reckless."

"It was insane."

"Yes."

Evelyn stared at her husband.

"You keep choosing small words for enormous sins."

Vittorio's face broke slightly.

"I know."

The investigator played the recording Claire had made of Leon.

Then the recovered financial records were displayed.

Leon had diverted millions from shell accounts created by Vittorio. He had bribed a fleet mechanic three years earlier. Maintenance records showed unauthorized access to Isabelle's vehicle the night before the crash.

Dominic asked the question he had avoided all morning.

"Did Leon act alone in killing Isabelle?"

The investigator answered carefully.

"The evidence currently indicates Leon authorized the mechanical sabotage. Owen altered the route on Vittorio's instruction, but we have not found evidence Vittorio knew Leon planned to damage the vehicle."

Dominic looked at Vittorio.

"You set the route."

Vittorio nodded.

"You sent Owen."

"Yes."

"You concealed your theft."

"Yes."

"You created the conditions."

Vittorio's eyes filled.

"Yes."

"But Leon killed her."

"Yes."

Dominic looked down.

For three years he had imagined a single guilty person.

A single order.

A single enemy.

The truth was uglier.

Isabelle had died inside a web of decisions made by people who each believed their own part was smaller than the whole.

Vittorio's corruption.

Bellamy's silence.

Owen's obedience.

Leon's greed.

Claire's secrecy.

Dominic's own reputation for violence, which had convinced Isabelle not to come directly to him.

He looked at Julian.

"You were right."

Julian frowned.

"About what?"

"She thought I would make it worse."

Julian did not soften the answer.

"You would have."

Dominic nodded.

"Yes."

Sophia watched him accept the sentence.

That, more than anything, told her he had changed.

The investigator continued.

"Leon will face charges related to the attempted murder of Luca Moretti, the abduction of Evelyn Moretti and the homicide investigation into Isabelle Moretti's death. Additional financial charges are likely."

"Vittorio?" Dominic asked.

"Fraud, conspiracy, financial crimes and obstruction are under review."

Vittorio nodded as though he had expected nothing else.

"Bellamy?"

"Professional misconduct, obstruction and potential fraud exposure."

Bellamy looked at the table.

"Claire?"

"Her cooperation and the recording matter, but unlawful surveillance and other conduct remain under review."

Claire whispered, "I understand."

Dominic turned toward Marcus.

"And his fake account?"

The investigator opened another file.

"Confirmed identity fraud. Created using documents accessible to Owen under the old security system. Marcus Hale is not implicated."

Marcus exhaled for what seemed like the first time in two days.

Sophia smiled at him.

"You can have your badge back."

Dominic said, "Maybe."

Marcus looked offended.

"Maybe?"

"Your camera coverage was terrible."

A few people actually laughed.

The sound disappeared quickly, but it mattered.

Evelyn looked at Vittorio.

"Was any of it worth it?"

He did not answer.

She repeated the question.

"Was any of it worth our niece, our marriage, our name?"

Vittorio's voice broke.

"I thought I was preserving something."

"You preserved fear."

"I know."

"No. You understand the words. Knowing comes when you live with what they mean."

Vittorio looked at her.

"Will you visit me?"

Evelyn's face remained still.

"I don't know."

For perhaps the first time in his life, Vittorio had no power to demand an answer.

The formal session ended after noon.

Outside the boardroom, Claire approached Dominic.

Her attorney remained several feet away.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

"Good."

"I loved Isabelle."

"I know."

"I love Luca."

Dominic looked at her.

"Then you will never again decide his life without him or me."

Claire nodded.

"If I'm allowed to see him—"

"Not now."

Her eyes filled.

"Ever?"

"I don't know."

She accepted that.

Before leaving, she looked at Sophia.

"Your daughter saw what every adult missed."

Sophia shook her head.

"She saw a man put powder on a cake."

"That's more than we saw."

Claire walked away.

Dominic and Sophia stood by the windows overlooking the city.

He said, "I have to tell Luca."

"Some of it."

"He'll ask everything."

"He's six."

"He asks everything."

"Then answer what a six-year-old needs to know."

Dominic looked at her.

"Which is?"

"That someone tried to hurt him. That Lily stopped it. That the adults responsible are being handled. That he is safe now."

"Am I supposed to promise that?"

"No."

He looked surprised.

Sophia continued.

"Promise what you can control."

"Such as?"

"That you won't hide danger from him just because the truth is uncomfortable."

Dominic looked through the glass.

"Isabelle tried to do that for me."

"Yes."

"And it failed."

"Yes."

He nodded slowly.

"I'll tell him."

They returned to the estate before dinner.

Luca ran to Dominic in the foyer.

"Did you catch the bad man?"

Dominic knelt.

"Yes."

"Was it Uncle Vittorio?"

Dominic paused.

"Partly."

Luca frowned.

"That's confusing."

"It is."

"Was Aunt Claire bad?"

"She made bad decisions because she thought she was protecting you."

"Is that bad?"

"Sometimes protecting someone can become controlling them."

Luca looked toward Sophia.

"Like when Dad says I can't have soda?"

Sophia pressed her lips together.

Dominic looked annoyed.

"Not exactly."

Luca considered.

"Did Lily save me?"

"Yes."

"Can we have another cake?"

Sophia burst out laughing.

Dominic looked at his son.

"That's your question?"

"The first cake got ruined."

Lily appeared at the top of the staircase with Naomi.

"No white powder," she announced.

Luca pointed.

"See? She agrees."

Dominic finally laughed.

It was quiet, rusty and unfamiliar in the house.

Sophia looked around the foyer.

For three years, everyone had treated Isabelle's death like a locked room.

Now the door was open.

The truth did not make the loss smaller.

It made hiding from it impossible.

And one more decision remained before the family could truly move forward.

May you like

Dominic had to decide what kind of empire Luca would inherit.

Or whether there should be an empire at all.
