Chapter 15 - Isabella’s Last Night

The second encrypted partition on Isabella’s drive opened with a password Luca should have guessed years earlier.

ALESSIA2018.

He stared at the screen. “Her birth year.”

Maya sat beside him. “People build complicated locks and simple keys.”

Inside was not another ledger.

It was a timeline.

Isabella had documented meetings, phone calls, altered calendars, strange transfers, and conversations over six months. She had photographed Dominic with Keene. Recorded Adrian changing Luca’s schedule. Traced Gabriel’s shell trusts.

And on the final page, she described the night before her death.

Luca read silently until his hands began to shake.

Maya did not ask what it said.

He turned the laptop toward her.

Gabriel came to the house tonight. Luca does not know. Adrian let him in through the east service entrance. Gabriel told me I was confusing survival with morality. He said Luca would lose everything if I kept asking questions. I told him I would rather lose money than let Alessia inherit fear.

Maya swallowed.

The entry continued.

Dominic arrived twenty minutes later. He looked frightened. Gabriel told him to handle me. Dominic refused in front of me. I believe that refusal may have been real.

Victor leaned closer.

“Dominic refused?”

Marco nodded slowly. “He may have joined later.”

Luca kept reading.

Adrian drove me home from the foundation office. I saw him send a message at a red light. He claimed it was business. Tomorrow I meet Lena. If I do not reach her, begin with the car.

Everyone went still.

“The car,” Maya said.

Isabella had died when her SUV crossed a median on Lake Shore Drive and struck a concrete barrier during heavy rain. Police blamed speed and mechanical failure.

Luca whispered, “I had the car destroyed.”

“Why?”

“I couldn’t look at it.”

Maya closed her eyes briefly.

Marco said, “Records may still exist.”

They did.

Insurance photographs. Repair estimates before the vehicle was scrapped. A mechanical report showing a ruptured brake line.

The original investigator marked it accidental road damage.

Lena Brooks disagreed immediately.

“That cut is too clean.”

Commander Grant brought in an independent forensic mechanic.

His conclusion came three hours later.

The line had been deliberately weakened.

Luca stood in the garage beneath harsh white lights when he heard.

Maya found him there alone.

“I spent two years thinking I should have driven her that night,” he said.

“You couldn’t know.”

“I knew she was afraid.”

“She hid why.”

“Because she thought I would react badly.”

Maya did not lie to him. “Would you have?”

“Yes.”

He leaned against a workbench.

“I would have gone after Gabriel. Dominic. Anyone she named. I would have made noise. Isabella knew noise got people killed.”

Maya stood beside him.

“You can’t change what version of you she was protecting.”

He looked at her.

“You can decide what version of you Alessia gets.”

For a long time, he said nothing.

Then Marco entered.

“We found Adrian.”

A warehouse camera on the south side captured him entering a private office complex owned by Gabriel’s trust.

Keene entered twenty minutes later.

Dominic arrived after midnight.

Gabriel was already inside.

“All four,” Luca said.

Marco nodded.

Commander Grant could obtain warrants, but Price still had influence in local courts. Lena suggested taking the evidence to a federal inspector general unit outside Keene’s chain.

Victor said, “That takes time.”

Maya looked at the timeline Isabella built.

“What are they waiting for?”

No one answered.

She searched upcoming Moretti business events.

One jumped out.

The foundation’s annual winter benefit was scheduled in forty-eight hours at the Grand Meridian Hotel. Hundreds of donors, city officials, press, and corporate partners.

Dominic had organized it before disappearing.

Maya felt a chill.

“They aren’t waiting.”

Luca looked at the event schedule.

“They’re planning something there.”

Marco scanned the vendor list.

Bell Municipal Systems provided temporary camera integration.

Halden Freight handled equipment delivery.

Carolyn Price was listed as an honorary guest.

Special Agent Thomas Keene had accepted an invitation.

Victor said, “That’s not a gala. That’s their entire network in one building.”

Maya looked at Luca.

“And they think you’ll cancel because of the investigation.”

His eyes sharpened.

“What if I don’t?”

Marco understood first.

“We let them believe the event is proceeding normally.”

Maya nodded.

“And we make them show us what they planned.”

By evening, the gala was no longer merely an event on the calendar. It had become the place where every separate line Isabella had drawn might finally cross.

The decision created one final argument. Luca wanted Maya nowhere near the hotel. Maya wanted access to the evidence room because she had tracked the pattern from the warehouse forward.

“You are a witness, not security,” he said.

“And you are a father, not an army.”

Victor quietly moved two chairs farther away.

Marco ended the debate by assigning Maya to the monitored operations room unless a specific reason required her elsewhere. Luca disliked the compromise. Maya disliked it slightly less. That was how they knew it was probably fair.
