Chapter 18 - The King and the Ghost

The shot hit the wall.

Keene never fired a second one.

Commander Grant’s officer drove him to the floor while another kicked the weapon away. Carolyn Price raised both hands immediately. Dominic stood frozen beside the disabled bomb case.

Gabriel Moretti did not move at all.

He looked toward the doorway just as Luca entered.

For a moment, the crowded service room disappeared around them.

Nephew and uncle.

Present and past.

The man Luca had become and the man his family had trained him to be.

Gabriel smiled. “There you are.”

Luca crossed the room before anyone could stop him.

Maya’s heart dropped.

But he did not strike Gabriel.

He stopped one step away.

“You killed Isabella.”

Gabriel’s smile thinned. “Is that what you heard?”

“I heard you admit it.”

“You heard an old man speaking carelessly.”

Commander Grant said, “Keep speaking carelessly. It helps.”

Gabriel ignored her.

“You were always sentimental, Luca. Your father knew it would make you weak.”

Luca’s hands remained at his sides.

“No,” he said. “It made me late.”

Gabriel frowned.

“I should have torn down what he built years ago.”

“You would have had nothing.”

“I would have had my wife.”

For the first time, Gabriel’s face changed.

Dominic sat against the wall while an officer cuffed him. “He told me Isabella survived the crash.”

Luca turned.

Dominic’s eyes were red. “He told me she died at the hospital because of internal injuries.”

Gabriel said, “Stop talking.”

Dominic laughed bitterly. “You kidnapped Sophie. You threatened Adrian’s brother. You were going to kill people tonight.”

“Dominic,” Gabriel warned.

“No.”

The word seemed to surprise Dominic himself.

He looked at Luca.

“I arranged Alessia’s abduction. I told myself she would be scared for one night and returned. I was wrong. That is mine.”

Luca’s expression was stone.

Dominic continued anyway.

“But Gabriel ordered Keene to eliminate Evelyn and Alessia if the drive could not be recovered.”

Keene shouted from the floor, “He’s lying.”

Inspector-general agents entered behind Grant.

One of them held up a phone.

“We have Adrian Cole’s recordings, financial transfers, and live audio from this room.”

Keene stopped shouting.

Price looked physically ill.

Gabriel finally glanced toward the doors.

Calculating exits.

There were none.

Maya stood near Luca, close enough to see his pulse beating at his neck.

Gabriel looked at her.

“You.”

She said nothing.

“The bus girl.”

“Maya Santos.”

“I know your name.”

“Then use it.”

Gabriel smiled faintly. “Do you think you changed him?”

Maya looked at Luca.

“No.”

Gabriel seemed pleased.

She continued, “I think Alessia did.”

The smile disappeared.

Commander Grant stepped forward. “Gabriel Moretti, you are under arrest for conspiracy, kidnapping, witness tampering, racketeering, and multiple additional offenses pending formal charging.”

“On whose authority?”

“Enough authorities that you can pick your favorite.”

Victor appeared in the doorway and almost laughed.

Gabriel’s gaze moved to Luca one last time.

“Family survives because someone is willing to do what everyone else pretends is beneath them.”

Luca answered quietly.

“No. Families survive when children stop inheriting the worst thing their fathers taught them.”

The officers took Gabriel away.

Dominic followed.

Keene and Price were escorted separately.

When the corridor finally emptied, Luca leaned one hand against the wall.

Maya stayed beside him.

“You didn’t hit him,” she said.

“I considered it.”

“I could tell.”

“I considered worse.”

“I could tell that too.”

He looked at her. “You’re not afraid of me.”

“Sometimes I am.”

That surprised him.

“But fear is information,” she said. “Not obedience.”

He absorbed the sentence.

Marco entered. “Alessia is safe. Rosa says she wants to know if the eye yelling is finished.”

Luca closed his eyes.

A laugh escaped him—quiet, exhausted, real.

“Tell her yes.”

Maya’s shoulders finally loosened.

Then Marco added, “There’s one more thing.”

He handed Luca a sealed evidence bag recovered from Gabriel’s coat.

Inside was Isabella’s original wedding ring on a thin chain.

Luca stared at it.

Gabriel had kept it for two years.

Not as evidence.

As a trophy.

Luca did not speak.

Maya touched his arm once.

This time, he let himself grieve where other people could see him.

Dominic asked for one thing before officers led him away.

“Tell Alessia I’m sorry.”

Luca’s face hardened. “You can tell a court what you did. She does not owe you the burden of your apology.”

Dominic lowered his eyes.

May you like

Maya watched Luca make another choice that his younger self might not have understood. He did not promise revenge. He did not use Alessia’s forgiveness as a prize. He protected her from being turned into the place where an adult tried to feel clean again.

Commander Grant later said the live recording from the service room had captured enough probable cause to preserve every arrest even before Adrian’s evidence was added. For once, the trap had closed on the people who built it.
