Chapter 17 - The Gala

At 6:00 p.m., the Grand Meridian glittered like nothing was wrong.

Champagne moved through the ballroom. A string quartet played beneath crystal chandeliers. Donors, executives, politicians, and reporters smiled for photographs while uniformed servers passed among them.

Underneath the evening, three separate operations were moving.

Commander Grant’s officers occupied the kitchens and loading docks.

The inspector-general team monitored Keene.

Marco’s people controlled the service corridors without wearing a single Moretti insignia.

Maya stood near the ballroom entrance in a borrowed black dress and hated every second of it.

“You look like you’re attending your own arraignment,” Victor said.

“I prefer warehouses.”

“That is a concerning personal development.”

Across the room, Luca shook hands with donors beneath a wall of camera flashes.

He looked calm.

Maya knew better now.

Adrian had been placed in protective custody after surrendering the recording. Bomb technicians searched the Winter Garden service room and found a device hidden inside an equipment case marked BELL MUNICIPAL SYSTEMS.

They did not remove it.

They disabled the explosive charge and left the outer casing intact.

The trap remained visible to whoever planned to trigger it.

At 6:43, Special Agent Thomas Keene arrived.

At 6:51, Carolyn Price entered.

At 7:02, Dominic Vale walked through the main doors in a tuxedo as if he had not spent the previous night running from gunfire.

Maya stared.

Victor whispered, “He has courage.”

“No,” Maya said. “He thinks he has protection.”

Dominic crossed the room and stopped in front of Luca.

Reporters noticed immediately.

“Cousin,” Dominic said.

Luca’s smile did not reach his eyes. “You have terrible timing.”

“I heard you were having family problems.”

“I am looking at one.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

Then he saw Maya.

Recognition flickered.

“Student.”

“Criminal genius.”

Victor coughed into his champagne.

Dominic walked away.

At 7:18, Bell’s temporary camera network went offline for eleven seconds.

Exactly eleven.

Marco’s voice came through the tiny receiver hidden in Maya’s earring.

“Loop active. They think cameras are blind.”

The hotel’s independent backup system continued recording.

Keene left the ballroom.

Price followed thirty seconds later.

Dominic waited two minutes, then moved toward the service hall.

Luca began after him.

Maya caught his sleeve.

“Not yet.”

“He’s moving.”

“That is the point.”

Luca looked ready to ignore her.

She tightened her grip. “Alessia needs a father more than the family needs a king.”

He froze.

“You read it,” Maya said.

His face changed.

Then he stayed.

Marco followed Dominic instead.

At 7:24, a fourth man entered the service corridor through a staff elevator.

Older. Silver hair. Cane.

Gabriel Moretti.

Luca saw him on the backup monitor in a side room and whispered, “Uncle.”

Gabriel walked perfectly well when he thought no one was watching.

Inside the Winter Garden service room, the four conspirators gathered around the disabled bomb case.

The backup microphones caught every word.

Keene said, “Once the device goes, we move Luca’s men into the frame and lock the floor.”

Price replied, “There are too many civilians.”

Gabriel’s voice was cold. “That is why the story works.”

Dominic stared at him. “You said controlled blast. Property damage.”

“Plans change.”

For the first time, Dominic looked afraid.

Keene opened the equipment case.

Nothing happened.

He frowned.

Gabriel looked at him. “Trigger it.”

Keene tried again.

Still nothing.

Dominic stepped backward.

“This is wrong.”

Gabriel turned. “You kidnapped a child and now discover morality?”

Dominic’s face twisted. “You said she would be returned.”

“You failed even at that.”

Maya watched Luca hearing every word.

His hands clenched, but he did not move.

Then Gabriel said the sentence Isabella had died before proving.

“I told you two years ago that women like Isabella become dangerous when men indulge them.”

Luca stopped breathing.

Dominic stared at him. “You ordered the brake line cut.”

Gabriel smiled.

“You knew that.”

“No. Adrian said you only wanted her frightened.”

“You all prefer innocence after the work is finished.”

Commander Grant’s voice came through the channel.

“We have enough.”

The service-room doors opened from both sides.

“Police! Hands where we can see them!”

Keene reached beneath his jacket.

Dominic shouted, “Don’t!”

A gunshot cracked.

The ballroom music stopped.

Luca was already moving.

Maya ran after him.

Before the doors opened to guests, Maya walked the Winter Garden corridor once with Marco. The service room smelled of fresh cable insulation and hotel detergent. Technicians had replaced the explosive core with inert material, but the timer display still glowed behind the case panel.

“Seeing it makes this worse,” Maya whispered.

“Good,” Marco said. “Fear should stay attached to what this actually is.”

He showed her the emergency exits and repeated the withdrawal signal. Maya made him repeat it once more. She had learned the difference between bravery and improvising without a plan.

Back in the ballroom, Luca noticed her scanning exits.

“You can still leave.”

May you like

“So can you.”

Neither of them did.
