Chapter 16 - The Winter Room

The Grand Meridian had a ballroom called the Winter Garden.
Maya found it on the hotel map at 7:12 the next morning.
Sophie’s remembered phrase—winter room—had sounded meaningless until then.
Marco spread the hotel blueprints across Luca’s dining table. “Ballroom on the third floor. Service corridors on both sides. Temporary security hub here.”
He pointed to a narrow room behind the stage.
“Bell Municipal Systems installed the camera relay yesterday.”
Maya looked at Luca. “That’s where they’ll want control.”
“Or where they want us looking,” he said.
She nodded. “You’re learning.”
Victor covered a smile with his coffee cup.
The plan changed three times before noon.
The gala would proceed. Publicly, Luca would appear cornered by the federal investigation and desperate to reassure donors. Privately, Commander Grant and an inspector-general team from Washington would place vetted officers among hotel staff. No one from Keene’s field office would be informed.
Alessia would not be at the estate.
Luca insisted on moving her, Rosa, Janelle, Evelyn, and Sophie to a safe house known only to Marco and Grant.
Alessia hated the idea.
“Maya comes?” she asked.
Maya knelt beside her suitcase. “Not this time.”
The little girl’s face tightened.
“I need you somewhere safe.”
“You said brave is scared and choosing carefully.”
“I did.”
“So choose carefully and come with me.”
Maya had no answer good enough.
Luca crouched beside them. “Maya is helping me finish this.”
Alessia looked between them. “You listen to her?”
“More than she believes.”
Maya raised an eyebrow.
Alessia considered that. “Then listen good.”
“I will.”
Before she left, she wrapped Maya’s denim jacket around her shoulders.
“It’s too big,” Maya said.
“That’s why it works.”
After the convoy disappeared, the estate felt wrong.
Too quiet.
At 2:40 p.m., Maya received an email from an unknown address.
COME ALONE TO THE PARKING GARAGE. LEVEL B3. IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH ABOUT ISABELLA.
Luca read it over her shoulder.
“No.”
“Predictable.”
“No.”
Marco checked the garage cameras. No unusual activity.
“That means nothing if Adrian has access,” Maya said.
Luca folded his arms. “You are not going alone.”
“I don’t intend to.”
They built a simple counterplan. Maya would enter visibly alone. Marco’s people would approach through stairwells outside camera coverage. Luca would remain two levels away.
“Two,” Maya emphasized.
Luca said nothing.
“Two levels.”
“I heard you.”
“That is not agreement.”
Victor muttered, “Welcome to the family.”
At 3:15, Maya walked into level B3.
Adrian Cole stepped from behind a concrete column.
He looked exhausted.
No gun in his hands.
“Stay there,” Maya said.
“I’m not here to hurt you.”
“People keep saying that in places where normal people do not meet.”
Adrian almost smiled.
Then his face collapsed.
“My brother died this morning.”
Maya’s caution sharpened.
“I’m sorry.”
“Gabriel paid for his treatment for four years. At first I thought it was kindness.”
“Then?”
“Then he asked for schedules. Small things. Meetings. Travel. Who Luca trusted.”
“And when you tried to stop?”
“He reminded me my brother’s medication cost thirty thousand dollars a month.”
Maya said, “You gave them Alessia’s route.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The word sounded like confession and self-destruction at once.
“Did you know they would kidnap her?”
“No. I swear. Dominic said Gabriel wanted Luca delayed during the shipment.”
“You stole the black folder.”
“Yes.”
“Isabella?”
Adrian’s face went gray.
“I sent Gabriel her destination the night she died. I thought he wanted to scare her.”
Maya felt no sympathy then.
Only cold.
“You helped kill her.”
“I know.”
He took a small recorder from his pocket and set it on the hood of a car.
“I recorded Gabriel yesterday. Keene too. They plan to use the gala to destroy the master ledger, trigger a staged attack, and blame Luca’s security.”
“Why tell us?”
“Because my brother is dead. Alessia almost died. And Gabriel told me this morning that I was next.”
Maya looked at the recorder.
“What is the attack?”
Adrian swallowed.
“A bomb in the Winter Garden service room.”
Adrian also explained the staged attack. Bell technicians had delivered an equipment case to the hotel under a legitimate invoice. Keene would control the first federal response, while Price would authorize emergency seizures of Moretti records after the blast. The objective was not merely to embarrass Luca. It was to erase evidence, kill selected witnesses if necessary, and create a public reason to dismantle the companies before independent investigators could reach the books.
“Gabriel wants the ruins,” Maya said.
Adrian nodded. “And whatever survives inside them.”
When Luca finally came down from level B1, he did not touch Adrian. He only asked one question.
“Did Isabella know you gave Gabriel her route?”
May you like
Adrian’s eyes filled. “I think she suspected.”
Luca turned away before anger could choose for him.
