Chapter 3 - The Daughter Isabella Buried From the Family

Isabella arrived in the archive at four seventeen.

She was still wearing the silk scarf around her wrist.

This time Luca removed it himself.

The bruise beneath had darkened.

He looked at Belini.

Belini looked away.

“Sit,” Luca said.

No one asked who he meant.

Belini sat.

Emma remained beside the hidden compartment.

The photograph of her mother was still in her hand.

Isabella saw it.

Her face broke.

Not dramatically.

One breath.

One trembling hand.

Then tears.

“You found Elena.”

Emma’s voice was quiet.

“She was my mother.”

“I know.”

The words hurt more than Emma expected.

“You knew?”

Isabella closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Luca turned toward her.

“How long?”

“Four months.”

Emma stared.

“You knew who I was for four months?”

“I suspected.”

“You searched my background.”

“No.”

Dante answered from the doorway.

“Belini did.”

Isabella looked at him.

He continued.

“But Mrs. Moretti asked me privately for Emma’s original hiring file three months ago.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“Mama.”

Isabella looked older suddenly.

“I needed to be certain.”

Emma placed the photograph on the table.

“Certain of what?”

Isabella touched the edge of it.

“That Elena was my daughter.”

Silence.

Emma thought she had misheard.

“My mother was your daughter?”

Isabella nodded.

“I was nineteen.”

Luca sat down.

He did not speak.

Isabella continued because stopping had become impossible.

“My father was not a forgiving man. Elena’s father was a clerk in one of his companies. He was Sicilian, poor, and unsuitable in every way that mattered to my family.”

“What happened?” Emma asked.

“They sent me to a convent for six months.”

Emma went cold.

“When I returned, everyone was told I had been ill.”

“And the baby?”

“Adopted.”

“By the Carters?”

“Yes.”

Emma’s eyes filled.

“My grandparents.”

“They were kind people. I made sure of that much.”

Luca finally spoke.

“You knew where Elena was.”

“Not after she turned eighteen.”

“Why?”

“My father made me sign papers. Vittorio later tried to find her, but the records had been sealed through private attorneys.”

Emma looked toward the envelope.

“Yet Vittorio knew my name.”

Isabella’s gaze moved to it.

“Because he found Elena before he died.”

Belini spoke for the first time.

“This changes nothing.”

Luca looked at her.

She should have stopped.

She didn’t.

“Emma is not a Moretti heir simply because your mother had a child before marriage.”

Isabella turned.

“No one said heir.”

Belini realized the mistake.

Too late.

Emma looked at Luca.

He had heard it too.

“Why did you say heir?”

Belini folded her arms.

“Because that is obviously where this is going.”

Dante opened the second red folder.

Inside were copies of trust documents.

Birth records.

Private correspondence.

And an agreement signed thirty-one years earlier.

Vittorio Moretti.

Isabella Moretti.

Vincent Vescari.

Luca’s gaze hardened.

“The agreement.”

Isabella began shaking.

Belini looked at her.

That one look explained months of fear.

Luca saw it.

He took the document from Dante.

The first page concerned financing.

The second concerned ownership.

The third contained a clause written in language so careful it sounded harmless.

Any previously undisclosed direct descendant of Isabella Moretti would possess a protected beneficial interest in the original Moretti family trust.

Emma stared at the page.

“How much?”

Dante read farther.

Then looked up.

“Twenty-five percent.”

Belini’s mouth tightened.

Emma almost laughed.

Not from humor.

From disbelief.

“I came here to clean bedrooms.”

Isabella whispered, “I know.”

Luca turned another page.

A handwritten amendment had been attached.

Signed by Vittorio five years earlier.

If Emma Carter is located and her identity confirmed, no Vescari marriage agreement may alter or extinguish her interest.

The room went silent.

Luca looked at Belini.

Now he understood why she had searched Emma’s records.

Why she had frightened Isabella.

Why the red folder mattered.

But one question remained.

He looked at his mother.

“If this protects Emma, why did Belini tell you I would lose everything?”

Isabella’s face changed.

“Because that wasn’t the part I was afraid of.”

Luca waited.

Isabella looked toward the sealed envelope.

“Your father discovered what the Vescari family did to Elena after she tried to claim her name.”

Emma felt the air leave her lungs.

“My mother never tried to claim anything.”

Isabella’s voice broke.

“She did.”

May you like

Then she pointed to the envelope.

“And Vittorio believed that was why she died.”
