Chapter 10 - What Emma Chose to Keep

Three weeks later, the Moretti dining room looked ordinary again.
No broken glass.
No security footage on the walls.
No red folder.
Isabella sat at the same table where Belini had bruised her wrist.
This time the silk scarf was gone.
Emma noticed that first.
She sat across from her.
Not as staff.
Not as an heir.
Just Emma.
Luca stood near the window reading the final audit summary.
Dante waited by the door.
“The transfers are confirmed,” Luca said.
“Carlo and Vincent moved Moretti funds for twenty-three years. Vincent’s companies are being seized. The banks accepted the independent verification, so the credit facilities remain open.”
Isabella exhaled.
The threat Belini had used against her was finished.
Luca continued.
“Carlo ordered surveillance on Elena. There is no written order to kill her.”
Emma nodded.
She had already accepted that the law might never produce a sentence simple enough for grief.
“But the crash reconstruction found a second vehicle,” Luca said.
Emma looked up.
“Vescari security.”
“Yes.”
“They chased her.”
“Yes.”
That was enough.
Not justice.
But truth.
Belini had admitted everything she personally did.
The intimidation.
The searches.
The archive break-in.
The bruises.
She had also turned over her father’s files.
Luca did not forgive her.
Neither did Isabella.
Emma did not need to decide yet.
Vincent Vescari faced fraud, conspiracy, obstruction, and charges connected to Elena’s death.
The old agreement had been declared void.
Carlo’s hidden transfers were reversed where possible.
And the trust had recognized Emma Carter as Isabella’s granddaughter.
Twenty-five percent.
Emma still had not touched the money.
Luca finally asked, “What are you going to do with it?”
Emma looked at Isabella.
“I don’t know.”
“That is acceptable.”
“You say that like you’re granting permission.”
“I’m practicing not doing that.”
Emma laughed.
A real laugh.
Small.
Unexpected.
Even Isabella smiled.
Then Emma placed the brass archive key on the table.
Isabella looked at it.
“I gave you that because I was afraid.”
“I know.”
“I should have given you the truth.”
“Yes.”
Isabella’s eyes filled.
Emma did not rescue her from the discomfort.
But after a moment, she reached across the table.
Isabella took her hand.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
Something smaller.
Something honest.
Luca watched.
Then turned away, giving them privacy without leaving.
Emma looked at the old woman who had lost her daughter twice.
Once to a family decision.
Once to fear.
“I’m keeping Carter,” Emma said.
Isabella nodded.
“You should.”
“And I’m keeping my job for now.”
Luca turned.
“No.”
Emma raised an eyebrow.
He corrected himself.
“You may keep working if you want. But not because you need permission.”
“Better.”
Dante looked down to hide a smile.
Emma touched the scarred silver locket Elena had left inside the recipe book.
She finally understood why her mother had never told her she was a Moretti.
Elena had not wanted a dynasty to define her daughter.
She had wanted Emma to have a choice.
That evening, Emma returned to the west archive alone.
The hidden compartment stood empty.
The second red folder had been transferred to evidence.
She closed the panel.
Then looked toward the camera.
Months earlier, Belini had believed cameras were dangerous only when they saw too much.
Emma had learned the opposite.
Sometimes the truth survived because something kept watching when everyone else chose not to.
Luca appeared in the doorway.
“You done?”
Emma looked around the archive one last time.
“Yes.”
“Ready to go home?”
She thought about the word.
Home had once meant a rented apartment.
Then a staff room.
Then nowhere certain at all.
Now Isabella was waiting upstairs.
The Moretti name was hers if she wanted it.
The Carter name already was.
Emma walked toward Luca.
“Yes.”
Behind them, the archive door closed.
