Chapter 9 - The Ledger on Vincent’s Plane

Vincent Vescari never reached the runway.

Moretti security did not touch him.

They did not need to.

Dante called the airport authority.

Then the bank.

Then the federal accountant whose name appeared in Elena’s old notes.

By the time Vincent reached his jet, three agencies were waiting.

Emma learned that at 2:06 p.m.

She felt nothing.

She had expected relief.

Instead she felt tired.

Eleven years of questions did not disappear because a man in an expensive coat was stopped beside a plane.

The original ledgers were inside a locked case in the cabin.

So were copies of Carlo Moretti’s payments.

Surveillance invoices.

Private investigators.

And one document Emma could not stop looking at.

A typed instruction.

Follow Elena Carter. Recover copied materials. Do not permit delivery.

Signed by Carlo.

Not Vincent.

Luca read it twice.

“So Carlo gave the order.”

Dante nodded.

“Vincent paid for it.”

“Any order to cause the crash?”

“Not yet.”

Emma looked at him.

“Maybe there never was one.”

Luca understood.

Her mother might have died while being followed.

Fear.

Speed.

Rain.

A consequence instead of a written command.

Still caused.

Still hidden.

Still stolen from her.

Isabella entered the room slowly.

Emma looked at her.

The older woman stopped several feet away.

“I am sorry.”

Emma did not answer.

“I know that does not fix anything.”

“No.”

“I know you may never forgive me.”

Emma looked down at the photograph of Elena.

“Did she forgive you?”

Isabella’s face broke.

“She said she understood why I was afraid.”

“That wasn’t what I asked.”

Isabella began crying.

“No.”

Emma nodded.

The answer hurt.

But it was real.

Luca watched quietly.

Then placed the Moretti trust amendment in front of Emma.

“This is yours.”

She looked at the twenty-five-percent interest.

“I don’t want it.”

“Wanting it and owning it are different questions.”

“I came here as a maid.”

“You came here as Emma Carter.”

He pushed the document closer.

“That name does not become smaller because other people hid what belonged to it.”

Emma looked at him.

For the first time since the archive, she almost smiled.

Dante entered.

“Belini’s statement is complete.”

Luca’s expression cooled.

“Did she cooperate?”

“Yes.”

“Fully?”

“Enough to bury her father.”

Emma looked toward the hallway.

“Where is she?”

“Guest wing.”

Isabella stiffened.

Luca noticed.

“She won’t come near you.”

Belini’s engagement to Luca ended that afternoon.

No announcement.

No dramatic scene.

Luca removed the ring from the family registry.

Canceled every joint Vescari event.

Froze shared accounts pending audit.

By dinner, everyone who mattered understood.

Belini was out.

Vincent was exposed.

The old alliance was dead.

But one question remained.

Dante returned after sunset with a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was a small audio recorder recovered from Vincent’s plane.

“Carlo recorded meetings,” he said.

Luca looked at Emma.

“Why?”

“Insurance.”

Dante pressed play.

Static.

Glasses.

A door.

Then Carlo Moretti’s voice.

And another man.

Vincent.

They argued about Elena.

Then came a third voice.

A woman.

Emma stopped breathing.

Isabella did too.

The recording was eleven years old.

But Emma knew that voice.

Her mother.

Elena had not been abducted.

She had walked into the meeting herself.

And before the recording cut out, she said one sentence.

“If I don’t leave this room, my daughter already has what she needs.”

Emma looked at the blue recipe book.

May you like

Her mother had known.

She had planned for survival even if she did not survive herself.
