Chapter 7 - Isabella’s Last Lie

By sunrise, every senior Moretti employee had lost access to the estate systems.
Luca ordered it without raising his voice.
Phones were surrendered.
Credentials frozen.
Security logs copied.
No one left.
Emma stood in Isabella’s sitting room while Dante worked downstairs.
The house felt different.
Not threatened from outside.
Suspected from within.
Isabella sat by the window.
Her wrist was bandaged now.
Emma looked at her.
“One lie left.”
Isabella did not pretend to misunderstand.
“Yes.”
“Who helped Vincent?”
Tears gathered in the older woman’s eyes.
“My husband’s brother.”
Luca went still.
“Uncle Carlo?”
Isabella nodded.
Carlo Moretti had died two years earlier.
A stroke.
Public funeral.
More than a thousand people.
Luca sat opposite his mother.
“You knew.”
“I knew after Elena came to me.”
“And you said nothing.”
“He had access to everything. Accounts. Guards. Drivers.”
“So did I.”
“You were twenty-three.”
Luca’s expression changed.
Isabella continued.
“Elena believed Carlo had been feeding Vincent information for years. She said the thefts only worked because someone inside Moretti approved the transfers.”
Emma looked at the ledger.
“Why would Carlo do that?”
“Debt.”
Dante entered.
“Confirmed.”
He placed several old statements on the table.
“Carlo owed Vescari-controlled lenders almost eight million before the first hidden transfer.”
Luca read them.
Then looked at his mother.
“How did Elena die?”
Isabella closed her eyes.
“Her car left the road.”
Emma felt dizzy.
She had been fourteen.
Police had called it an accident.
Rain.
Speed.
Bad tires.
Isabella whispered, “Elena called me that night.”
Emma sat down.
“What did she say?”
“She had copied everything. She was going to meet a federal accountant the next morning.”
“And?”
“She said a black sedan had followed her twice that week.”
Emma could barely breathe.
“Did you tell police?”
“No.”
The word was almost inaudible.
Emma stood.
Isabella looked up.
“I was afraid.”
“My mother died.”
“I know.”
“You knew she was being followed.”
“I know.”
“You let me spend eleven years believing she lost control of a car.”
Isabella began crying.
Emma turned away.
Luca did not comfort his mother.
He did not attack her either.
He simply said, “Fear explains silence. It does not erase what silence costs.”
Isabella nodded.
“I know.”
Dante placed one more document on the table.
“Carlo’s estate archive included a private storage account.”
Luca looked down.
“Where?”
“Vescari Tower.”
Emma laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
Dante continued.
“The account remained active after Carlo’s death.”
“Who accessed it?”
He looked at Emma.
“Belini.”
The room went still.
Not her father.
Belini.
Three months ago.
The same week the first bruise appeared on Isabella’s wrist.
Luca understood first.
“She found Carlo’s files.”
Dante nodded.
Emma looked at Isabella.
“And then she realized I existed.”
“Yes.”
Luca stood.
Belini had not begun the conspiracy.
She had inherited it.
Then made a choice.
She could have exposed it.
Instead, she used it.
Luca picked up his coat.
“Bring her here.”
Dante hesitated.
“Her father won’t cooperate.”
May you like
Luca looked at him.
“I didn’t ask Vincent.”
