Chapter 4 - The Letter Gabriel Left Under Samuel’s Name

St. Jude Parish had changed very little.

Dark stone.

Old wood.

The smell of dust and wax.

Lucía remembered attending her mother’s memorial there.

Samuel stopped coming afterward.

Father Mateo remembered him anyway.

He remembered Gabriel too.

That surprised Daniel.

“Your father asked me to keep something,” the priest said.

“For whom?”

“Two possible people.”

Daniel already knew one.

“Samuel.”

Father Mateo nodded.

“And?”

“You.”

The answer tightened Daniel’s chest.

The priest led them below the chapel.

A records room.

Metal shelves.

Old baptism books.

At the back stood one locked cabinet.

Inside:

A black leather document case.

Gabriel Ortega’s initials pressed into the corner.

Daniel recognized it.

His father had carried it for twenty years.

He opened it.

One envelope.

DANIEL.

Nothing else.

Lucía stepped back.

Valeria stayed beside him.

Daniel broke the seal.

If you are reading this, Samuel did not reach you in time.

Daniel swallowed.

The second line was worse.

Samuel did not steal the Harbor Nine money.

Lucía closed her eyes.

Daniel kept reading.

The fraud required three things:

Daniel’s credentials.

Samuel’s authorization.

Access to Gabriel’s continuity override.

Daniel stopped.

Gabriel’s override.

Not Daniel’s.

Valeria whispered:

“Someone used both of you.”

“Yes.”

The letter continued.

Esteban had access to the systems.

But Esteban is not the person I fear.

Daniel felt the room go still.

Lucía leaned closer.

There was more.

He follows instructions.

The person giving them is family.

Daniel looked at Valeria.

Then at Lucía.

Family.

The word changed everything.

Father Mateo pointed toward the bottom of the case.

“Your father told me there was another compartment.”

Daniel removed the lining.

A key.

Small.

Steel.

Marked G-14.

And a memory card.

The video on it lasted two minutes.

Gabriel appeared on screen.

Older.

Tired.

Alive.

“If Daniel sees this, then I failed to return.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

His father continued.

“Esteban Vega created the false executive session.”

Lucía gripped the edge of the table.

“He altered the archive and redirected the evidence toward Samuel.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“But he did not choose Samuel.”

Gabriel looked directly into the camera.

“Someone else did.”

A pause.

“Someone who knew Daniel would believe the documents because he trusted family judgment more than instinct.”

The video cut.

No name.

No answer.

Only the G-14 key.

Ignacio went pale when he saw it.

Valeria noticed.

“What does it open?”

Ignacio hesitated.

Daniel looked at him.

“Now.”

“Gabriel’s private continuity archive.”

“Where?”

“Madrid.”

Daniel froze.

“The archive behind his old office?”

Ignacio nodded.

“The room sealed after his funeral.”

Daniel closed his hand around the key.

Chicago had not given him the answer.

May you like

It had given him the door.

And the person who had framed Samuel was waiting somewhere behind it.
