Chapter 7 - The Road Gabriel Never Finished

Gabriel died outside Toledo.

Rain.

A mountain road.

Guardrail failure.

A car in the ravine.

That was the report.

Daniel had accepted it because the story sounded like Gabriel.

Fast.

Impatient.

Certain he could control a machine better than anyone else.

Now Esteban told them what the report omitted.

“The car had been serviced that afternoon.”

Daniel stared.

“By whom?”

“A company used by the Ortega Foundation.”

Valeria went pale.

“What was changed?”

“Brake pressure.”

Lucía whispered:

“My God.”

Daniel did not react.

Not yet.

“When did you learn?”

“Two days after the funeral.”

“Who told you?”

“Elena.”

“What did she say?”

Esteban looked sick.

“That Gabriel had chosen confession over family.”

Daniel’s hands tightened.

“And?”

“She said the problem corrected itself.”

Silence.

Lucía looked at Daniel.

He stood.

Walked to the window.

Madrid lights below.

Same city Gabriel had tried to return to.

He never made it.

Valeria did not touch Daniel.

She simply stood beside him.

That helped.

Daniel turned back.

“Proof.”

Esteban removed a flash drive.

Security moved.

He placed it on the table.

“Insurance.”

“Against Elena?”

“Against everyone.”

The files contained invoices.

A service payment.

A transfer to the mechanic.

A payment to a recovery company that reached Gabriel’s car before police.

Then an audio file.

Elena’s voice.

“The report remains mechanical failure. Daniel cannot inherit chaos.”

Daniel stopped the recording.

Enough to understand.

Not enough for court.

Yet.

Lucía asked:

“Why keep this?”

Esteban’s answer was simple.

“Because Elena owned me.”

He looked at Daniel.

“She knew I framed Samuel.”

The structure became clear.

Elena built theft on top of Gabriel’s hidden system.

Samuel discovered it.

Esteban framed him.

Daniel fired him.

Gabriel doubted the evidence.

Found Samuel in Chicago.

Learned the truth.

Decided to confess.

Elena stopped him.

Then helped Daniel inherit the company she had already compromised.

If Daniel failed, she could step in.

If Daniel succeeded, she stayed close enough to control him.

Either way:

Elena won.

Valeria looked at Esteban.

“Where are the originals?”

He looked away.

Daniel noticed.

“You know.”

“No.”

“You looked at the floor.”

Esteban exhaled.

“There is a vault under the foundation building.”

Daniel knew it.

Old stone headquarters near Retiro.

Elena spent Thursdays there.

Today was Thursday.

Daniel checked the time.

11:38 p.m.

Lucía understood.

“She’s there.”

Daniel picked up the G-14 key.

Esteban shook his head.

“You cannot walk in there.”

Daniel looked at him.

“My father left me a key.”

May you like

He slipped it into his pocket.

“And Elena just spent three years assuming I would never use it.”
