Chapter 5 - The Room Nobody Opened After Gabriel Died

Daniel returned to Madrid without notifying the board.

Only Valeria.

Lucía.

Ignacio.

And two security men knew.

Gabriel’s old office had remained untouched for three years.

Daniel told himself it was respect.

Now it felt like negligence.

The G-14 key opened a hidden panel behind the bookshelves.

A second lock.

Then a steel door.

The room beyond smelled sealed.

Paper.

Leather.

Dust.

No computers.

Gabriel trusted systems only until they could be manipulated.

Lucía moved between shelves.

Valeria found fourteen numbered drawers.

G-1 through G-14.

Daniel opened the last.

Inside:

A red folder.

A photograph.

Three handwritten pages.

The photograph showed Gabriel standing with Esteban.

And one woman.

Daniel stopped.

“Elena.”

His aunt.

Gabriel’s younger sister.

Chairwoman of the Ortega Foundation.

The woman who had helped Daniel through the succession.

Who sat beside him at the funeral.

Who had insisted Samuel was guilty.

Lucía looked at the date.

Two nights before Samuel’s dismissal.

Valeria whispered:

“She was there.”

Daniel opened the red folder.

Executive authority.

Continuity permissions.

Foundation accounts.

Emergency override rules.

Elena Ortega’s initials appeared beside the highest family access level.

E.O.

Gabriel had written beneath it:

Can activate G-level authority without board notice.

Daniel felt cold.

That meant Elena could authorize the temporary session.

Not directly.

But through Esteban.

Lucía opened another file.

Foundation transfers.

Large amounts.

Infrastructure vehicles.

Political consultants.

Foreign advisers.

Then shell companies.

Samuel’s project appeared repeatedly.

Valeria frowned.

“These are not Harbor Nine losses.”

“No.”

Daniel flipped another page.

“These predate them.”

By years.

So Samuel had not created the problem.

He had discovered an old one.

Lucía found a note.

Gabriel’s handwriting.

Samuel saw the foundation pattern.

E. wants him removed before Daniel asks questions.

Daniel read it twice.

The phone in his pocket vibrated.

Elena.

He did not answer.

It rang again.

Then a message arrived.

Welcome home.

Everybody stopped.

Nobody had announced the flight.

Valeria looked toward the corner.

A security camera.

Tiny.

Still active.

Daniel stared at it.

“She knows we are here.”

A printer on Gabriel’s desk suddenly came alive.

One page.

Then another.

The first showed Lucía’s Chicago apartment.

Taken that morning.

The second showed one of her children leaving school.

Lucía went white.

The third sheet contained one sentence.

STOP DIGGING INTO GABRIEL’S MISTAKES.

Daniel picked it up.

His anger disappeared.

That worried Valeria more.

“What are you thinking?”

Daniel looked at the wording.

Gabriel’s mistakes.

Not Samuel’s.

Not Esteban’s.

Gabriel’s.

Someone was not only protecting the fraud.

They were protecting what Gabriel had originally built.

He turned to Lucía.

“Your father found something older than Harbor Nine.”

She nodded slowly.

May you like

Daniel looked at the red folder.

“And Elena knows exactly what it is.”
