Chapter 6 - Esteban Said Elena’s Name

Daniel did not summon Esteban to the office.

He invited him to dinner.

Casa Ortega.

Same room.

Same table.

Same place where Daniel had been sitting with Gabriel during the false login.

Esteban noticed immediately.

“Subtle.”

Daniel poured wine.

“You taught me.”

Esteban did not smile.

Valeria sat on Daniel’s right.

Lucía waited in the adjoining room.

Ignacio watched from the hall.

Daniel placed the access log on the table.

Then Samuel’s notebook.

Then Gabriel’s photograph.

Esteban’s face changed.

Not enough.

But enough.

Daniel asked:

“Who ordered the duplicate session?”

Esteban looked at the wine.

“You know.”

“I want to hear you say it.”

Silence.

Daniel waited.

Finally:

“Elena.”

Valeria closed her eyes.

Daniel remained still.

“Why Samuel?”

“Because he found the foundation transfers.”

Lucía entered.

Esteban looked startled.

Good.

“What transfers?” she asked.

Esteban exhaled.

“The foundation was routing money through infrastructure vehicles.”

Daniel frowned.

“That is not automatically illegal.”

“No.”

Esteban looked at him.

“But Elena had turned some of them into private channels.”

“How much?”

“Over ten years?”

A pause.

“Nearly ninety million.”

Lucía stared.

“And my father saw it.”

“Yes.”

“So you made him look like the thief.”

Esteban looked ashamed.

“Elena said Samuel was trying to destroy the family.”

“That is not an answer.”

“I created the temporary executive identity.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“I opened the original archive.”

Lucía stepped closer.

“And inserted my father’s approvals?”

“Yes.”

“And the money?”

“I moved enough through his authority to make the pattern believable.”

Lucía’s voice stayed calm.

“You destroyed him.”

Esteban looked down.

Daniel asked the next question.

“Why did Gabriel go to Chicago?”

“Because he never believed Samuel stole that money.”

“Why?”

“He knew the foundation system too well.”

Daniel frowned.

“Too well?”

Esteban laughed once.

No humor.

“Because Gabriel created it.”

The room went quiet.

Daniel stared.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

Lucía looked shocked.

Esteban continued.

“Years ago, political investigations threatened Ortega assets. Gabriel built hidden routes to move money temporarily.”

“For bribes?”

“For protection.”

“Same difference.”

“Not to him.”

Daniel looked at the red folder.

“So Elena inherited the system.”

“She learned it.”

“And stole through it.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t Gabriel expose her immediately?”

“Because exposing her meant exposing himself.”

There it was.

The mistake Gabriel had been trying to correct.

The reason he needed proof.

The reason he used Chicago.

Samuel was innocent.

Gabriel was not.

Not entirely.

Daniel asked:

“When did Elena know he was going to confess?”

Esteban’s face changed.

“The week he died.”

Valeria stopped breathing.

Daniel’s voice became very quiet.

“My father’s accident.”

Esteban looked at him.

Then nodded.

“No.”

Lucía frowned.

“No what?”

“No accident.”

Daniel stared at him.

May you like

Esteban finished the sentence.

“Elena made sure he never reached Daniel.”
