Chapter 2 - The Door Adrian Had Waited Twenty-Four Years to Open

Adrian stood outside suite 902.

One key card in his hand.

The other in his pocket.

Samuel waited several steps away.

Bianca remained near the elevator.

Her father had not come.

Adrian looked at the door.

Then at Samuel.

“How long have they been inside?”

“Three hours.”

“Together?”

“Yes.”

Adrian swallowed.

“Do they know I’m coming?”

Samuel nodded.

“They hoped.”

Adrian looked at Bianca.

She whispered:

“I can leave.”

He stared at her.

“Did they ask you to?”

“No.”

“Then stay.”

She nodded.

Adrian used the key card.

The door opened.

His father stood first.

Older.

Gray at the temples.

Thin.

But unmistakable.

Adrian stopped breathing.

His father whispered:

“Adrian.”

Then his mother appeared from the sitting room.

She covered her mouth.

Adrian stared at her.

The face from photographs.

Older.

Alive.

Twenty-four years older.

His mother said:

“My boy.”

He did not move.

His father stepped forward.

Adrian raised one hand.

“Don’t.”

The man stopped.

Silence.

Adrian looked at both of them.

“You were here.”

His father nodded.

“Yes.”

“Together.”

“Yes.”

“And you waited.”

His mother’s eyes filled.

“We were told—”

Adrian cut her off.

“I know what you were told.”

She stopped.

He looked at his father.

“You believed she was dangerous.”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

His father lowered his eyes.

“Four years.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“And after that?”

“I learned the records were fake.”

“You searched for her.”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Ten years.”

Adrian laughed once.

“Then disappeared.”

His father nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The answer came from Adrian’s mother.

“Because he found out what your grandfather had done.”

Adrian looked at her.

“What?”

She walked to a table.

A folder sat there.

Old.

Thick.

She handed it to him.

Inside.

Medical records.

Court filings.

Private investigator reports.

All stamped with his grandfather’s signature.

Adrian turned pages.

Then stopped.

A custody petition.

His mother’s name.

Request denied.

Reason:

MENTAL INSTABILITY.

Adrian looked up.

“This was forged.”

“Yes.”

His mother’s voice broke.

“I never abandoned you.”

He stared.

She continued.

“I tried to take you.”

His father closed his eyes.

Adrian looked at him.

“And you stopped her.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

His father whispered:

“I thought I was protecting you.”

Adrian almost smiled.

“Everyone says that.”

No one answered.

He kept reading.

Then found another page.

A payment authorization.

Signed by his father.

To a private doctor.

For “evaluation services.”

Adrian stared.

His father said:

“I paid him.”

“To lie?”

“I did not know.”

“You paid the man who helped my grandfather take my mother away.”

“Yes.”

Adrian stepped back.

His mother said:

“He has lived with that for twenty years.”

Adrian looked at her.

“So have I.”

Silence.

Bianca started crying quietly near the door.

Adrian looked at her.

“You knew enough to bring me here three weeks ago.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“What?”

“I never came here.”

Adrian frowned.

“Where did you meet them?”

His mother answered:

“At a bank archive.”

Adrian turned.

“Why?”

His father looked at Samuel.

Samuel said:

“Because suite 902 was not the first place they planned to meet you.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“What was?”

Samuel placed a metal box on the table.

The same number.

902.

Adrian stared.

His father said:

“Safety-deposit box 902.”

Samuel opened it.

Inside.

One envelope.

One ring.

One cassette.

And a sealed document.

Adrian picked up the envelope.

His name.

He opened it.

His grandfather’s handwriting.

Adrian recognized it instantly.

He had seen that handwriting on birthday cards.

Business notes.

Funeral flowers.

He read the first line.

IF ADRIAN IS READING THIS, THEN HIS MOTHER FOUND A WAY BACK.

Adrian stopped.

His mother went pale.

His father whispered:

“I never saw that.”

Samuel looked shocked.

Adrian continued.

SHE WILL TELL HIM I LIED.

SHE WILL BE RIGHT.

Silence.

Adrian looked at everyone.

Then read the next line.

BUT SHE WILL NOT TELL HIM WHY I NEEDED HER GONE.

His mother stared.

Adrian looked at her.

“You knew about this letter?”

“No.”

His father stepped closer.

“Read it.”

Adrian did.

YOUR MOTHER DISCOVERED SOMETHING THAT COULD HAVE DESTROYED THIS FAMILY.

SHE BELIEVED THE TRUTH WOULD SAVE YOU.

I BELIEVED THE TRUTH WOULD GET YOU KILLED.

Adrian’s face changed.

“What truth?”

No one answered.

Samuel pointed to the sealed document.

Adrian opened it.

A list of bank accounts.

Dates.

Names.

One name repeated.

Victor Russo.

His grandfather.

Another.

Gideon Vale.

Bianca’s grandfather.

Adrian looked at Bianca.

Her face went pale.

He turned to Samuel.

“What is this?”

May you like

Samuel answered:

“The reason both families wanted your mother silent.”
