Chapter 3 - The Account That Connected the Russos to the Vales

Adrian spread the documents across the hotel table.
Victor Russo.
Gideon Vale.
Joint accounts.
Private trusts.
Offshore transfers.
Dates going back thirty years.
Bianca stared.
“My grandfather?”
Samuel nodded.
“Yes.”
Adrian looked at the papers.
“What were they hiding?”
His mother sat down.
“Money.”
Adrian shook his head.
“That does not explain twenty-four years.”
His father answered:
“Not just money.”
He opened another folder.
Construction companies.
Ports.
Security contracts.
Political donations.
Payments to prosecutors.
Judges.
Police captains.
Adrian stared.
“My grandfather bought protection.”
“Yes.”
His father continued.
“And Gideon Vale laundered the money.”
Bianca whispered:
“My grandfather was a banker.”
Samuel looked at her.
“He was more than that.”
Adrian turned.
“You knew?”
Samuel nodded slowly.
“I suspected.”
“For how long?”
“Twenty-eight years.”
Adrian laughed without humor.
“Apparently patience is a family business.”
Samuel accepted it.
His mother touched one document.
“This is what I found.”
Adrian looked at her.
“How?”
“I worked in Victor’s office before you were born.”
He frowned.
“You never told me that.”
“You were never allowed to know anything about me.”
She continued.
“I found duplicate ledgers.”
“Originals?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
She hesitated.
Adrian’s eyes sharpened.
“Where?”
His father answered:
“She hid them.”
“Where?”
His mother looked at Samuel.
The banker closed his eyes.
Adrian stared.
“Box 902.”
Samuel nodded.
Adrian looked at the metal box.
“It was empty except for these.”
Samuel said:
“Because the ledgers were removed.”
“When?”
“Six months ago.”
Adrian’s face changed.
“The photograph was deposited six months ago.”
“Yes.”
“So someone opened the box.”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Samuel took out the access log.
Three names.
Samuel Ford.
Victor Russo.
Gideon Vale.
And one emergency proxy.
Marcus Vale.
Bianca’s father.
Silence.
Bianca whispered:
“No.”
Adrian stared.
Samuel said:
“Marcus entered four days before Adrian’s father.”
Adrian looked at Bianca.
“So your father took them.”
Samuel nodded.
“Copies.”
Adrian frowned.
“Copies?”
His mother said:
“I kept the originals somewhere else.”
Samuel looked surprised.
Adrian stared.
“You never told him.”
“No.”
“Where are they?”
His mother looked toward the dark window.
“Somewhere Victor never controlled.”
Bianca asked:
“Did my father know?”
“No.”
Samuel said:
“He believed he had the only set.”
Adrian looked at Bianca.
“So your father may still think he controls the evidence.”
“Yes.”
His father said:
“We confronted Marcus six months ago.”
“And?”
“He said he would return the ledgers after the acquisition.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Business.”
Again.
His mother nodded.
“He said if they surfaced before the deal closed, Vale Capital would collapse.”
Bianca whispered:
“That is why he delayed everything.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Everything includes my parents.”
She lowered her eyes.
“Yes.”
Samuel said:
“There is more.”
Adrian looked at him.
Samuel opened another envelope.
A share transfer agreement.
Vale Capital.
Thirty-one percent.
Temporary beneficiary:
Bianca Vale.
Adrian stared.
Then looked at her.
“What is this?”
She went white.
“I have never seen that.”
Samuel looked surprised.
Adrian handed it to her.
Her signature appeared at the bottom.
Bianca stared.
“That is not mine.”
Adrian looked at Samuel.
“Forged?”
“Possibly.”
His father said:
“Marcus was trying to move ownership.”
Adrian frowned.
“Why through Bianca?”
His mother answered:
“Because of you.”
Adrian stared.
She continued.
“If you married Bianca, Russo and Vale assets could be merged legally.”
Adrian looked at Bianca.
Her eyes filled.
“I did not know.”
Samuel added:
“Marcus knew the old accounts would eventually surface.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“So he wanted them absorbed into a new structure before regulators saw them.”
“Yes.”
Bianca whispered:
“He used our engagement.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Just like he used my parents’ return.”
Silence.
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
Adrian answered.
A man’s voice.
“Mr. Russo.”
“Who is this?”
“Your future father-in-law almost made a mistake.”
Adrian looked at Bianca.
“Almost?”
The man laughed softly.
“He tried to sell something that never belonged to him.”
Adrian’s father stood.
Adrian said:
“What?”
“The ledgers.”
Silence.
Samuel went pale.
Adrian’s mother whispered:
“No.”
The voice continued.
“If you want the originals.”
A pause.
“Come to the old Vale bank.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Who are you?”
The man answered:
“Someone your mother met twenty-four years ago.”
The line went dead.
His mother’s face emptied.
Adrian looked at her.
“You know him.”
She whispered:
“Yes.”
“Who?”
May you like
She sat down slowly.
“The man who helped me disappear.”
