Chapter 4 - The Man Who Helped Adrian’s Mother Vanish

The old Vale bank had been closed for twelve years.
Stone facade.
Boarded windows.
One side entrance.
Adrian arrived with his father.
His mother came too.
Bianca insisted on joining.
Samuel stayed in the car.
Inside.
Dust.
Empty counters.
Old brass cages.
A man waited beneath the clock.
Sixty-five.
Gray hair.
Dark coat.
Adrian’s mother stopped.
“Daniel.”
The man smiled sadly.
“Hello, Sofia.”
Adrian stared.
“You helped her disappear.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“Who are you?”
“Former private investigator.”
“For whom?”
“Your grandfather.”
Adrian’s face changed.
Daniel continued.
“Victor hired me to watch your mother.”
His father looked sick.
Adrian asked:
“And instead?”
“I helped her leave.”
“Why?”
Daniel looked at Sofia.
“She showed me the ledgers.”
Adrian stared.
“You knew everything.”
“Enough.”
Bianca asked:
“Where are the ledgers now?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Safe.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“From whom?”
“Everyone.”
Adrian’s father said:
“Including me.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
Adrian looked at him.
“You were still working for Victor when Sofia disappeared.”
His father said:
“I know.”
Daniel continued.
“You signed the doctor’s payment.”
“I know.”
“You signed the custody motion.”
His father went pale.
Adrian looked at him.
“You signed it?”
His mother closed her eyes.
His father whispered:
“Yes.”
Adrian stared.
“Not just the medical payment.”
“No.”
“You signed the papers that took me from her.”
“Yes.”
Silence.
Adrian’s face hardened.
“Why did you not tell me upstairs?”
His father looked at Sofia.
“She asked me not to.”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
Sofia stepped forward.
“I wanted to tell you myself.”
“You had twenty-four years.”
The words landed.
She stopped.
Daniel watched them.
Then said:
“Victor controlled him too.”
Adrian looked at Daniel.
“That is not a defense.”
“No.”
Daniel nodded.
“It is context.”
Adrian turned back to his father.
“Did you believe she was unstable?”
“At first.”
“And after?”
“I realized Victor had lied.”
“When?”
“Four years later.”
Adrian’s voice went quiet.
“You still stayed.”
His father’s eyes filled.
“I was afraid he would take you from me too.”
Adrian shook his head.
“He already had.”
Silence.
Daniel opened an old vault door.
Inside.
One wooden case.
He placed it on the table.
“The original ledgers.”
Bianca stared.
“My father did not have them.”
Daniel nodded.
“No.”
Adrian frowned.
“But Samuel’s access log showed Marcus entered box 902.”
“He did.”
“What did he take?”
Daniel opened the case.
One compartment was empty.
“Copies.”
Adrian stared.
His mother whispered:
“I made duplicates.”
Daniel nodded.
“Marcus stole the duplicates.”
Adrian looked at Bianca.
“So your father may not know the originals survived.”
“No.”
Daniel continued.
“That is why he is dangerous tonight.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Why tonight?”
Daniel pulled out another document.
The acquisition.
Closing time.
Midnight.
If completed.
Vale Capital would acquire three Russo-controlled companies.
Adrian’s signature required.
He stared.
“I never signed this.”
Daniel nodded.
“But someone scheduled the closing anyway.”
Bianca’s face changed.
“My father.”
“Yes.”
Adrian looked at the time.
10:42 PM.
Daniel said:
“Marcus needs your approval before midnight.”
Adrian smiled faintly.
“He will not get it.”
Daniel shook his head.
“He may not need the real one.”
Adrian stared.
“What?”
Daniel took out a biometric authorization sheet.
Digital signature.
Voice print.
Facial confirmation.
Bianca whispered:
“He recorded Adrian.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Where?”
She went pale.
“The engagement contract.”
Silence.
Daniel nodded.
“The pen contained a pressure sensor.”
Adrian stared.
“The cameras?”
“Facial capture.”
“The toast?”
“Voice sample.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“The entire party was authentication.”
Bianca covered her mouth.
Adrian looked at her.
“Did you know?”
“No.”
He believed her.
For the first time that night.
Immediately.
That surprised both of them.
Daniel continued.
“Marcus can fake the closing.”
Adrian looked at the ledgers.
“Then why call me?”
Daniel smiled.
“Because I want him to try.”
Adrian frowned.
Daniel pointed toward an old security room.
“Every forged authorization will become evidence.”
Adrian’s father looked at him.
“You have been building a case.”
Daniel nodded.
“For twenty-four years.”
Adrian stared.
Against Victor.
Against Marcus.
Against anyone who used those accounts.
Daniel looked at Adrian.
“But I need one thing.”
“What?”
“Your consent.”
Adrian laughed once.
“Someone finally asked.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
Adrian looked at his mother.
Then his father.
Then Bianca.
“Do it.”
Daniel turned on the recording system.
