Chapter 9 - Samuel Ford Wanted the Ledgers Burned Before Midnight

The private bank opened only for Adrian.

Emergency access.

Daniel arrived ten minutes later.

He had been locked in a service elevator.

Samuel’s men.

Adrian carried the wooden case.

Original ledgers inside.

Bianca walked beside him.

Daniel whispered:

“He wants the evidence.”

Adrian nodded.

“Then he gets to see it.”

They entered the vault level.

Samuel stood near box 902.

Sofia and Adrian’s father sat nearby.

Not tied.

Two armed men watched them.

Samuel smiled.

“I am sorry.”

Adrian stared.

“No, you are not.”

Samuel considered that.

“Fair.”

Bianca looked at him.

“You forged my signature.”

“Yes.”

“You framed my father.”

“Partly.”

Samuel looked at Adrian.

“Marcus made that easy.”

Adrian set the case down.

“You helped Victor.”

“Yes.”

“Gideon.”

“Yes.”

“Matteo.”

“Sometimes.”

“My father.”

“No.”

Samuel shook his head.

“I tried to keep him away from the accounts.”

Adrian laughed.

“You expect credit?”

“No.”

Samuel looked tired.

“For once, no.”

He pointed at the ledgers.

“Open them.”

Adrian did not move.

“Why?”

Samuel answered:

“Because there is one page your mother never saw.”

Sofia frowned.

“What?”

Samuel looked at her.

“You stole the ledgers before Victor finished them.”

Adrian opened the case.

Samuel directed him to the final volume.

Back cover.

A hidden fold.

Adrian pulled out one page.

Names.

Ownership percentages.

Victor Russo.

Gideon Vale.

Samuel Ford.

And one final name.

Elias Lane.

Adrian stared.

Bianca whispered:

“Lane?”

Samuel smiled sadly.

“Emma’s grandfather.”

Adrian frowned.

“Why does that matter?”

“Because the accounts were not criminal at first.”

Silence.

Samuel continued.

“They were created to protect assets during a political crisis.”

“Then Victor and Gideon corrupted them.”

“Yes.”

“And you?”

Samuel looked at the floor.

“I helped.”

Adrian stared.

Samuel continued.

“Elias wanted out.”

“What happened to him?”

Samuel did not answer.

Adrian understood.

“You killed him.”

“No.”

Samuel looked up.

“Victor did.”

Sofia went pale.

Samuel continued.

“I covered it.”

Adrian’s father closed his eyes.

Samuel pointed at the ledgers.

“That page proves Emma’s family owns a legal claim to twenty-five percent of the original trust.”

Bianca whispered:

“So Emma is an heir.”

“Yes.”

Adrian stared.

“Does she know?”

“No.”

Samuel shook his head.

“And I want it to stay that way.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“That is why you came to the party.”

“Yes.”

“You wanted the engagement completed.”

“Yes.”

“Then the trust merged.”

“Yes.”

“And Emma’s claim disappeared.”

Samuel nodded.

Adrian almost laughed.

“You brought the photograph to control me.”

“Yes.”

“You exposed my parents because you thought the shock would keep me focused on family.”

Samuel smiled faintly.

“Yes.”

“And away from the money.”

“Yes.”

Bianca stared at Samuel.

“You almost succeeded.”

Samuel looked at Adrian.

“Burn the final page.”

“No.”

“Then Emma’s life changes forever.”

“That is her decision.”

Samuel’s face hardened.

“She will become a target.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“That sounds familiar.”

Sofia looked at Samuel.

“You are doing what Victor did.”

Samuel flinched.

Adrian continued.

“You call control protection.”

Samuel stared.

“You think truth is kind?”

“No.”

Adrian shook his head.

“I think lying is expensive.”

He looked at his parents.

“Ask us.”

Samuel’s eyes changed.

Adrian said:

“You have spent decades deciding what everyone else should survive.”

Silence.

“Now we decide.”

Daniel moved closer.

The armed men looked at Samuel.

Samuel raised one hand.

They lowered their weapons.

He looked exhausted.

Then reached into his coat.

A small recorder.

He placed it on the table.

“My confession.”

Adrian stared.

Samuel continued.

“Victor.”

“Gideon.”

“Elias.”

“The forged trusts.”

“Everything.”

Bianca looked at him.

“Why?”

Samuel smiled sadly.

“Because I am seventy-nine.”

He looked at Adrian.

“And apparently I am tired of being protected by my own lies.”

Adrian took the recorder.

Samuel whispered:

“There is one person left to tell.”

Adrian looked toward the vault door.

May you like

Emma Lane stood there.

She had heard everything.
