Chapter 7 - Adrian’s Father Finally Told Him Why He Vanished

Back at the hotel.
Adrian stood in front of his father.
No one else spoke.
Sofia sat near the window.
Bianca remained by the door.
Samuel and Daniel waited outside.
Adrian asked:
“Did you find her before you disappeared?”
His father looked at Sofia.
Then nodded.
“Yes.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“How long before?”
“Six months.”
Silence.
“You knew where she was.”
“Yes.”
“You knew she was alive.”
“Yes.”
“You still vanished.”
“Yes.”
Adrian laughed softly.
“Why?”
His father swallowed.
“Because I learned what I had done.”
Adrian stared.
“You already knew you signed the papers.”
“I knew what I signed.”
“That sounds worse.”
“It is.”
His father’s eyes filled.
“I did not only testify.”
Sofia looked away.
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“What else?”
“I gave Victor something.”
“What?”
“A letter.”
Silence.
Sofia whispered:
“Tell him.”
His father closed his eyes.
“A letter you wrote at eight.”
Adrian frowned.
“To Mom?”
“Yes.”
Adrian stopped.
He remembered.
A school assignment.
Write to someone you miss.
He had written:
I wish you had stayed.
His father continued.
“Victor asked for it.”
“Why?”
“To prove to Sofia that you blamed her.”
Adrian’s face emptied.
His mother began crying.
Adrian stared at his father.
“You gave him my letter.”
“Yes.”
“And grandfather sent it to her.”
“Yes.”
Sofia whispered:
“I believed you hated me.”
Adrian looked at her.
“I was eight.”
“I know that now.”
His father continued.
“Six months before I disappeared, I found Sofia.”
He looked at Adrian.
“She showed me the letter.”
Adrian said nothing.
“I recognized it.”
His father’s voice broke.
“I realized Victor had used my own son’s words to keep her away.”
Adrian stared.
“So you ran.”
“No.”
His father shook his head.
“I tried to confess.”
“To me?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“Matteo found out.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“He threatened you?”
“Yes.”
“With what?”
His father looked at Sofia.
Then at Adrian.
“With evidence that could have sent me to prison.”
Adrian almost smiled.
“For what?”
“Perjury.”
“Fraud.”
“Obstruction.”
Silence.
Adrian said:
“So you disappeared to avoid prison.”
His father flinched.
“At first.”
Sofia whispered:
“He is telling the truth.”
Adrian looked at her.
She continued.
“He came to me terrified.”
“He wanted to run.”
“I told him no.”
Adrian frowned.
“You told him to stay gone?”
“No.”
“I told him to gather evidence.”
His father nodded.
“We spent eleven years building a case.”
Adrian stared.
“Against Matteo.”
“Yes.”
“Marcus.”
“Yes.”
“And Victor?”
His father looked down.
“Victor died before we could finish.”
Adrian said:
“Convenient.”
Sofia’s face hardened.
“You think we killed him?”
Adrian did not answer.
She stood.
“We did not.”
His father reached into his jacket.
A flash drive.
He handed it to Adrian.
“Victor recorded his final statement.”
Adrian stared.
“When?”
“Two days before he died.”
“Why?”
“Because he knew Matteo was moving against him.”
Adrian plugged it into a laptop.
Victor Russo appeared on screen.
Older.
Weak.
The grandfather who raised him.
The man who taught him how to tie a tie.
How to negotiate.
How to distrust weakness.
Victor looked at the camera.
“If Adrian sees this, I failed.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Victor continued.
“I kept Sofia away because she wanted to take him from the family.”
Sofia looked disgusted.
Victor said:
“I believed bloodline mattered more than motherhood.”
A pause.
“I was wrong.”
Adrian stopped breathing.
Victor continued.
“I fabricated her records.”
“I paid the doctor.”
“I pressured my son to testify.”
Adrian looked at his father.
Victor said:
“But Matteo turned protection into business.”
Silence.
“He and Gideon Vale expanded the accounts.”
“Marcus inherited that arrangement.”
Bianca went pale.
Victor continued.
“And my son helped me once.”
Adrian’s father closed his eyes.
“Then spent the rest of his life trying to undo it.”
Adrian watched.
Victor coughed.
“If Adrian hates me, he should.”
A pause.
“But do not let Matteo convince him that guilt and evil are the same thing.”
The video ended.
No one spoke.
Adrian looked at his father.
“You were guilty.”
“Yes.”
“Not innocent.”
“No.”
“You still left me.”
“Yes.”
Adrian nodded slowly.
“Good.”
His father frowned.
“What?”
“You finally said it without protection.”
Silence.
Adrian looked at Bianca.
She understood.
No excuses.
No rewriting.
Just truth.
His phone buzzed.
Daniel.
One message.
MATTEO TALKED.
Adrian opened it.
Another line.
HE SAYS MARCUS VALE WAS NOT WORKING FOR HIM.
Adrian stared.
Bianca went pale.
“What?”
May you like
Adrian looked at her.
“Your father was working for someone else.”
