Chapter 2 - The Second Recording

Marco pressed play.

Belini did not move.

On the screen, Matteo Bellori stood beside Luca’s desk.

His voice was low.

“If Serrano keeps reporting improvement, the petition won’t survive review.”

Belini answered without hesitation.

“Then Serrano stops reporting improvement.”

Emma looked at Luca.

His right hand tightened around the glass.

Bellori continued.

“And the medication?”

Belini glanced toward the study door.

“Already changed.”

The room went silent.

Luca looked at the pill packet on Emma’s tray.

Then at Belini.

“What did you change?”

She shook her head.

“Nothing.”

Marco froze the video.

“Boss.”

Luca did not look away from her.

“Test everything.”

Emma picked up the medication packet carefully.

Belini stood.

“You cannot possibly think I poisoned you.”

Luca’s voice stayed calm.

“I think you just admitted on video that my medication was changed.”

“That is not what I meant.”

“What did you mean?”

She had no answer.

Marco called Dr. Serrano.

The rehabilitation specialist arrived twenty minutes later.

He checked the pills.

His expression changed.

“These aren’t mine.”

Emma felt cold.

“What are they?”

“Same shape. Same color.”

Serrano broke one tablet.

Smelled it.

Then looked at Luca.

“Muscle relaxant.”

Luca’s eyes narrowed.

“How strong?”

“Enough to reduce coordination.”

Belini whispered:

“It was for pain.”

Serrano turned.

“I never prescribed it.”

Luca looked at Emma.

For months, Belini had controlled his medication schedule.

Emma had only started handling the tray two weeks earlier.

Two weeks.

The same period Luca’s recovery had accelerated.

Serrano understood too.

“Who stopped giving him the evening packet?”

Emma raised her hand slightly.

“I did.”

Belini stared.

Emma continued.

“He said it made him too tired. I asked Dr. Serrano if he could skip it.”

Serrano nodded.

“I approved.”

Luca looked at Belini.

The truth was suddenly simple.

His hand had not begun healing three weeks ago.

It had begun healing when Emma stopped giving him medication someone else wanted him to take.

Belini’s face went pale.

Luca flexed his fingers.

“So this was never about helping me recover.”

Belini backed toward the door.

Marco blocked it.

Luca asked:

“How long?”

She said nothing.

May you like

He repeated:

“How long have you been keeping me weak?”
