Chapter 9 - Luca Removed His Own Power

The next morning, every Moretti trustee met in the boardroom.
Luca arrived in the wheelchair.
Some looked at his hand.
Some looked at Belini’s empty chair.
Some looked away.
Luca placed the original trust on the table.
Then the amended version.
Then Bellori’s petition.
“Burn them.”
Carlo stared.
“What?”
“Not literally.”
Luca looked at the attorneys.
“Terminate the incapacity transfer clauses.”
One attorney shifted.
“That will reduce emergency control.”
“Good.”
“It will also limit family authority during medical crises.”
“Good.”
Carlo frowned.
“What replaces it?”
“Independent trustees.”
The room erupted.
Luca waited.
Then lifted his right hand.
Silence returned.
He did not slam the table.
He did not need to.
“For seven months, this family treated my body as a corporate event.”
Nobody moved.
“My injury became a voting mechanism.”
He looked at Carlo.
“A reason to bypass me.”
Then at the empty chair where Belini had sat.
“A reason to control me.”
Then at the lawyers.
“A reason to transfer assets.”
Emma stood near the door.
Not as staff.
As a witness.
Luca continued.
“That ends today.”
The new trust required independent medical review.
Multiple signatures.
No spouse proxy.
No automatic family transfer.
No incapacity vote based on one doctor.
No controlling beneficiary tied to marriage.
Carlo read the draft.
“You’re giving outsiders power over the family.”
“No.”
Luca looked at him.
“I’m preventing the family from using weakness as a weapon.”
Carlo said nothing.
Then signed.
One by one, the others followed.
Belini arrived near the end.
No red dress.
For the first time, she wore gray.
Luca noticed.
She sat opposite him.
“I’m cooperating.”
“With investigators?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Belini looked at him.
“Because Bellori used me.”
Luca’s expression stayed calm.
“That is not enough.”
She swallowed.
“I also used you.”
Better.
“I knew the medication made you weaker.”
Emma went still.
Belini continued.
“I didn’t know Bellori caused the crash. But once I saw you dependent on me…”
She stopped.
Luca waited.
“I liked it.”
The truth landed harder than denial.
Belini looked down.
“I told myself I was helping. I told myself you needed me.”
Luca’s voice was quiet.
“And when I didn’t?”
“I made sure you did.”
Emma closed her eyes.
There it was.
The whole relationship.
Not love.
Need manufactured into loyalty.
Belini signed her statement.
Then removed the engagement ring.
She placed it on the table.
Luca did not touch it.
“Goodbye, Belini.”
She looked at him once.
Then left.
No scene.
No promise.
May you like
No second chance.
Just consequence.
