Chapter 4 - The Trust Nobody Was Supposed to Read

Moretti Maritime was nearly empty at midnight.

Luca arrived in the wheelchair.

Not because he could not walk at all.

Because he was not ready to perform recovery for anyone.

Emma came with him.

Marco did not object.

Bellori was still inside the records room.

He had locked the door.

Luca stopped outside.

“Matteo.”

Silence.

“Open it.”

A voice came through the wood.

“You don’t understand what she did.”

Belini stood behind two guards.

Her face hardened.

Luca looked at her.

“What did you do?”

Bellori answered for her.

“She changed the beneficiary.”

Marco broke the lock.

Bellori stood beside an open safe.

Documents covered the floor.

No weapon.

Only fear.

Luca entered.

“Explain.”

Bellori looked at Belini.

“She told me the trust transferred to her after marriage.”

Belini said nothing.

Bellori continued.

“It doesn’t.”

Luca looked down.

The original Moretti trust was old.

His father’s signature.

Three trustees.

One succession clause.

If Luca became permanently incapacitated before producing a legal heir, temporary voting control passed to the family trustee board.

Not Belini.

Not her family.

The board.

Luca looked up.

“Then why the proxy trust?”

Bellori swallowed.

“To redirect the board vote.”

“How?”

“Three trustees signed side agreements.”

Marco asked:

“Who?”

Bellori looked at Belini.

She closed her eyes.

Luca’s voice dropped.

“Names.”

“Carlo Moretti. Enzo Moretti. And—”

He stopped.

“And?”

Bellori looked toward Emma.

“Paolo.”

Emma frowned.

“The driver Belini dismissed?”

“Yes.”

Belini snapped:

“Paolo never signed anything.”

Bellori stared at her.

“You told me he did.”

The room shifted.

Luca looked at Belini.

She looked genuinely confused.

That mattered.

Bellori pulled another page from the safe.

Paolo’s signature.

Witnessed two days after he had supposedly been dismissed.

Luca stared.

“Where is Paolo?”

Marco checked.

“No one has seen him.”

Belini whispered:

“I fired him because he was asking about the crash.”

Luca turned slowly.

“What?”

She realized the mistake.

Too late.

Emma’s eyes widened.

“The crash?”

Belini stepped backward.

Bellori closed his eyes.

Luca’s voice became very quiet.

“Why was Paolo asking about my accident?”

Nobody answered.

Then Bellori said:

“Because the SUV belonged to a Moretti shell company.”
