Chapter 13 - At the Gate

Adrian stood outside the iron gates of Ashford House with both hands visible.

No weapon.

No luggage.

No lawyer.

Police vehicles waited out of sight beyond the tree line.

Damon approached from inside the property.

Shaw listened through his wire.

Naomi watched from the security room with Zuri beside her.

Adrian smiled when Damon stopped ten feet away.

"You brought police."

"Yes."

"You used to handle your own problems."

"That was one of my problems."

Adrian's smile thinned.

"I came to talk."

"Talk."

"Not through a gate."

"The gate stays closed."

Adrian laughed.

"Elena really did turn you into a coward."

Damon felt the old reflex to prove himself.

Then he let it pass.

"Try something else."

For the first time, Adrian looked irritated.

"You think those files tell a clean story?"

"No."

"Victor sabotaged the car."

"At your direction."

"I told him to delay her."

"You paid him."

"I paid everyone. That's what executives do."

Damon's voice remained calm.

"Did you assault Tessa?"

Adrian's face hardened.

"She was an adult."

"That wasn't my question."

"She's lying because she wants money."

From the security room, Tessa heard the live audio.

Shaw had asked her whether she wanted it turned off.

She had said no.

Adrian continued.

"Elena found a frightened intern and turned her into a weapon."

Damon nearly stepped closer.

Instead he said, "You keep describing women as dangerous when they speak."

Adrian stared at him.

"Very poetic."

"Did you order Greer to damage Elena's car?"

"No."

"Did you tell Victor to stop her from reaching the board?"

"I told him to solve a problem."

There.

Shaw's eyes lifted.

Damon asked, "What problem?"

"Elena."

The word hung between them.

Adrian realized what he had said.

He changed direction immediately.

"She was destroying everything."

"What was everything?"

"The company. The family. You."

"By exposing theft?"

"By refusing to understand scale."

Damon almost laughed.

"You stole millions from a charity."

"I moved money where it could work."

"For you."

"Don't pretend Ashford money was sacred. Your grandfather built half this fortune by crushing competitors."

"My grandfather isn't standing at my gate."

Adrian's voice sharpened.

"You think Elena was innocent? She blackmailed Victor with evidence about his daughter."

"No. She offered Tessa protection."

"Same thing with prettier language."

Damon looked at the man he had called family.

"What happened the morning Elena died?"

Adrian went quiet.

Damon waited.

"I called Victor."

"And?"

"I told him she couldn't reach the meeting."

"And?"

"He said he'd handle the car."

"Did you ask how?"

"No."

"Did you care?"

Adrian's jaw worked.

"No."

In the command van, Shaw silently signaled the officers.

Damon continued.

"When you heard she crashed?"

"I was horrified."

"Then why did you destroy evidence?"

"Because nobody would believe I didn't mean for her to die."

"Would they have been wrong?"

Adrian stepped closer to the gate.

"I did not kill Elena."

"You created the conditions and then buried the truth."

"That's not murder."

"That's for a jury."

Adrian's control broke.

"You sanctimonious bastard. You ignored her too."

Damon absorbed the blow.

"Yes."

Adrian blinked.

Damon continued.

"I ignored her. I failed her. I will carry that for the rest of my life."

His voice remained steady.

"But my failure doesn't erase yours."

Adrian stared at him.

For years he had controlled Damon through shame.

Now the weapon no longer worked.

Damon said, "Did you order Isaiah killed?"

Adrian's silence changed.

Naomi leaned toward the monitor.

Damon asked again.

"Did you?"

Adrian looked toward the road.

"I didn't know Victor would go that far."

Naomi made a sound like she had been struck.

Shaw whispered, "We have it."

Damon's hands clenched.

"Say his name."

"What?"

"Isaiah Carter."

Adrian laughed nervously.

"Why?"

"Because you turned him into a thief after he risked his life telling the truth."

"I didn't order his death."

"You knew Victor intended to silence him."

Adrian said nothing.

"Say his name."

Adrian's face twisted.

"Isaiah Carter was a security guard who got involved in things above his pay grade."

Damon stepped to the gate.

"And he was braver than both of us."

Police emerged from the trees.

Adrian spun.

Officers surrounded him.

Shaw approached with the warrant.

"Adrian Vale, you're under arrest for conspiracy, wiretapping, fraud, obstruction of justice, and additional charges pending."

Adrian looked at Damon.

"This company dies without me."

Damon said, "Then it dies."

For the first time Adrian seemed genuinely frightened.

As officers placed him in the car, Zuri slipped from Mrs. Whitfield's hand and ran onto the front steps.

Naomi followed.

Zuri waved the gold lion.

Adrian saw it.

His face changed.

"The card," he whispered.

Damon heard him.

"You knew."

Adrian stared.

Damon lifted the lion.

"Elena made sure someone would listen eventually."

Adrian was driven away.

Naomi stood beside Damon.

"Is it over?"

"No."

She nodded.

"Trial."

"Trial. The company. Zuri's adoption. Tessa. Victor."

"Your garden."

Damon looked toward the unfinished east wing.

"That too."

Zuri tugged his sleeve.

"Daddy lion is happy."

Damon looked down.

"What did you call him?"

She pointed at the figurine.

"Daddy lion."

Naomi and Damon exchanged a look.

Then Zuri added, "He came home."

Damon turned toward the house.

May you like

For the first time since Elena died, the front doors did not look like the entrance to a mausoleum.

They looked like doors.
