Chapter 3 - What the Recorder Remembered

Naomi's brother arrived after midnight.

Caleb Carter was taller than Naomi, broad-shouldered, suspicious, and visibly unimpressed by Damon Ashford's wealth.

He entered through the service entrance carrying two metal cases.

"You the billionaire?" he asked.

Damon stood from the kitchen table. "I'm Damon."

"I know who you are."

Naomi closed the door. "Caleb."

"What? He knew who Isaiah was too. Didn't help."

Damon did not defend himself.

"Can you recover the recorder?"

Caleb took it without answering.

They moved into a small sitting room away from the staff quarters. Caleb opened the device, replaced a corroded battery contact, and connected it to his laptop.

For twenty minutes there was only silence.

Then he said, "There's audio."

Naomi gripped the back of a chair.

"How much?"

"Several files."

Damon felt his heartbeat in his throat.

Caleb played the first recording.

Static.

Then Elena's voice.

"Damon, if you hear this, please don't turn this into one more problem you can solve by ordering people around."

Damon shut his eyes.

He had forgotten the exact rhythm of her sarcasm.

Naomi glanced at him but said nothing.

The recording continued.

"Adrian has been moving money through Halcyon Consulting. I found transfers from the Ashford family foundation that don't match approved grants. When I asked him, he told me I misunderstood the documents."

A pause.

"I didn't."

Caleb stopped the file.

Damon said, "Keep going."

In the second recording, Elena sounded frightened.

"I asked Isaiah Carter to pull hallway footage because someone entered my office while I was sleeping. Isaiah found gaps in the system. Not outages. Deletions."

Naomi whispered, "Oh, Isaiah."

"He told me not to confront anyone until he copied the logs. Adrian knows I'm asking questions."

Damon's hands curled into fists.

The third file began with the sound of a door closing.

Elena spoke more softly.

"Damon thinks Adrian is family. That's the problem. He thinks blood and loyalty are the same thing."

Damon looked down.

She had told him almost those exact words once.

He had laughed.

The fourth recording was damaged.

Caleb isolated the audio.

Elena said, "If I don't get the files to Damon, Isaiah has a copy. He hid it where Adrian won't look. Lion... garden... north wall..."

The rest dissolved into static.

Naomi looked at Damon.

"The garden."

He stood immediately.

The winter garden construction site had remained untouched for three years. Plastic sheeting hung in tatters around unfinished stonework. Moonlight cut across pallets of tile and rusted equipment.

Damon carried a flashlight.

Caleb carried a pry bar.

Naomi refused to stay inside.

They found the north wall behind a row of stacked limestone slabs.

At shoulder height, a small lion had been carved into the unfinished mortar.

Caleb swore under his breath.

"Isaiah always did love puzzles."

Damon ran his fingers along the stone.

One brick shifted.

Behind it sat a weatherproof pouch.

Naomi began crying before they even opened it.

Inside were two flash drives and a folded note.

If Elena is dead and I am being blamed, these files matter more than my name. Give them to Damon only if he is finally willing to see.

Isaiah Carter.

Damon read the line several times.

Caleb stared at him.

"He didn't trust you."

"He shouldn't have."

They returned inside and disconnected the house from its external network before opening the files.

The first drive contained deleted security logs.

The second contained financial records.

Halcyon Consulting had received millions from a charitable foundation connected to Ashford Holdings.

The beneficiary chain ended with Vale Strategic Partners.

Adrian's private company.

Naomi said, "He stole from your family?"

Damon shook his head.

"He stole from scholarship funds, medical grants, housing programs."

Caleb leaned toward the screen.

"What's this folder?"

ACCIDENT.

Damon's stomach turned.

Inside were photographs of Elena's black car in the estate garage two days before her death.

A mechanic knelt beside the rear wheel.

The timestamp was 2:14 a.m.

Naomi whispered, "Can you see his face?"

Caleb enhanced the image.

The man looked up.

Not Adrian.

Damon recognized him anyway.

"Victor Hale."

"Who?" Naomi asked.

"My former head of security."

Caleb opened the next file.

An email from Adrian to Victor.

Make sure E does not reach the board meeting.

No explicit order to kill.

No mention of brakes or tires.

But the date was the morning before Elena died.

Damon stepped away.

"I trusted both of them."

Naomi's voice was quiet.

"Elena didn't."

He looked at her.

"And I trusted them instead of her."

No one answered.

A noise came from the doorway.

Zuri stood there in pajamas, rubbing one eye.

Naomi hurried over.

"Baby, why are you awake?"

Zuri pointed at Damon's laptop.

"Bad man."

Everyone froze.

"Which one?" Damon asked.

Zuri pointed to Adrian's photograph in an attached corporate directory.

"That one."

Naomi's face drained.

Damon crouched.

"Have you seen him before?"

Zuri nodded.

"Where?"

"In Mama's dream."

Naomi closed her eyes.

"Zuri—"

But the child continued.

"He was yelling at the singing lady by the stairs."

Damon's memory fractured open.

Two weeks before Elena died, he had returned home early and heard voices near the east staircase.

Elena and Adrian.

He had not listened.

He had gone to his study and shut the door.

The next morning Elena had said, "You heard us, didn't you?"

Damon had replied, "Whatever this is, handle it."

He remembered her face now.

Not angry.

Defeated.

Caleb snapped the laptop shut.

"We need police."

Damon shook his head.

"We need evidence that survives police."

Caleb stared at him.

"You think money makes this complicated?"

"No. Adrian makes it complicated."

Damon picked up his phone.

"He's on the board. He has political connections. He has controlled Ashford legal strategy for fifteen years."

Naomi said, "So what do we do?"

Damon looked toward the dark window, where the unfinished garden reflected faintly behind them.

"We make him believe I still trust him."

Then he looked at Elena's ring.

"And this time, I listen before I act.
