Chapter 6 - The First Arrest

The district attorney arrived before dawn with two investigators and a face that suggested she trusted evidence more than billionaires.
Her name was Evelyn Shaw.
She listened to the recordings twice.
Then she looked at Damon.
"You understand these do not prove murder."
"They prove Elena was investigating Adrian, that he concealed financial transfers, that he discussed her car with Victor Hale, and that he illegally recorded my home."
"They strongly suggest those things."
Naomi crossed her arms. "What would make it enough?"
Shaw turned to her.
"Physical evidence tying someone to the vehicle sabotage. A witness. A confession. A payment tied to the act."
Caleb said, "Victor Hale."
"Where is he?"
Damon answered. "Nevada, according to an old pension record."
Shaw shook her head. "Not anymore. He disappeared eight months ago."
Damon's phone rang.
Ashford Holdings.
He ignored it.
Shaw noticed. "You also have a corporate problem."
"I have a murdered-wife problem."
"You may have both."
By seven, the news had leaked.
ASHFORD FOUNDATION UNDER INTERNAL REVIEW.
VALE DENIES IMPROPRIETY.
Damon stared at the headline.
"Adrian moved first."
Shaw said, "That's what defense lawyers do when they think prosecutors are coming."
"He's not just a lawyer. He's vice chairman."
"Then assume every institution around him is contested."
A tactical team went to Adrian's Beacon Hill townhouse.
He was gone.
His passport remained in the safe.
His primary phone sat charging on the kitchen counter.
The second phone had disappeared.
Naomi stood in the study as Damon received the update.
"He planned this."
"Yes."
"Before yesterday?"
"Probably for years."
Damon finally answered the call from the board.
The chairman, Harold Penn, sounded furious.
"Damon, what the hell is happening?"
"Call an emergency meeting."
"Adrian says you're having a breakdown."
Damon laughed once.
"Of course he does."
"He circulated a memo alleging you've become unstable since Elena's anniversary."
"What does he want?"
"A temporary leave while the foundation audit proceeds."
Naomi mouthed, He planned everything.
Damon said, "Schedule the meeting."
Harold lowered his voice.
"Are you sure?"
"No. Schedule it anyway."
After the call, Damon opened a locked cabinet.
Inside were three years of therapy notes he had never shown anyone.
Naomi looked away.
He said, "You can look."
"I wasn't trying to."
"I know."
He removed a folder.
"After Elena died, I saw a psychiatrist for eighteen months. Adrian chose him."
Naomi looked back.
Damon turned pages.
"Dr. Martin Keene. He diagnosed prolonged grief, insomnia, anxiety."
"All believable after losing your wife."
"Yes."
"Which makes them useful."
Damon met her eyes.
"Exactly."
Caleb entered carrying a tablet.
"Found something on Isaiah's crash."
Naomi went still.
The official report said Isaiah lost control on a wet curve outside Worcester.
Caleb had obtained photographs from the salvage auction.
"Look at the steering linkage."
Damon zoomed in.
A bolt had been removed.
Not broken.
Removed.
Naomi sat down.
"No."
Caleb's jaw tightened.
"Isaiah wasn't reckless. He drove like somebody's grandfather."
Damon called Shaw immediately.
She asked for the original vehicle evidence.
There was none.
The car had been sold for parts six months after the case closed.
"But the auction photographs are timestamped," Caleb said.
"And useful," Shaw replied. "Especially if an expert confirms deliberate tampering."
Naomi wiped her face.
"I spent eighteen months believing he died tired."
Damon said quietly, "I'm sorry."
She looked at him.
"Don't apologize for the crash."
"I wasn't."
"For what, then?"
"For believing the report that made him look like a thief. For never asking why a good employee suddenly became a criminal the same week my wife became afraid."
Naomi's anger did not disappear.
But something inside it shifted.
"Then help clear his name."
"I will."
A security officer rushed in.
"Mr. Ashford, police found Jared Pike."
"Where?"
"Logan Airport parking structure."
Shaw's voice came through Damon's speaker.
"Alive?"
"Yes."
"Bring him in."
Two hours later, Pike sat in an interview room.
He denied attacking Mrs. Whitfield.
He denied entering Ashford House.
Then investigators showed him gate footage.
His lawyer asked for a break.
Pike began bargaining.
Damon watched remotely from Shaw's office.
Naomi sat beside him.
Pike finally said, "I never touched the old woman."
Shaw asked, "Who paid you?"
"No one."
"Then why were you there?"
Pike stared at the table.
"Victor."
Damon leaned forward.
Shaw kept her face still.
"Victor Hale?"
Pike nodded.
"When did he contact you?"
"Three days ago."
Naomi whispered, "He's alive."
Pike continued.
"He said I needed to retrieve a recording device and anything connected to Elena Ashford. He said Mr. Vale wanted the house cleaned."
Shaw asked, "Where is Victor?"
"I don't know."
"How did he contact you?"
"Encrypted app."
"Do you still have it?"
Pike's lawyer sighed.
Pike nodded.
The messages were recovered.
One included coordinates.
Not in Nevada.
Not overseas.
A remote property in western Massachusetts owned by a shell company.
Damon recognized the company name.
Halcyon Consulting.
Shaw stood.
"We have enough for a search warrant."
Naomi grabbed Damon's sleeve.
"You're not going."
He looked at her.
"If Victor killed Isaiah—"
"Then the last thing Isaiah needs is you turning this into another funeral."
Damon wanted to argue.
Instead, he heard Elena's recorded voice in his mind.
Please don't turn this into one more problem you can solve by ordering people around.
He sat back down.
"You're right."
Three hours later, Shaw called.
They had found Victor Hale.
Alive.
Armed.
May you like
And in the basement beneath his house, they had found a locked steel cabinet containing maintenance records from Elena's car.
One page carried Adrian Vale's signature.
