Chapter 17 - The Last Defense

Adrian testified against his attorneys' advice.

The decision surprised everyone except Damon.

Adrian had spent too many years controlling rooms to sit silently while other people defined him.

He took the oath with perfect composure.

Bell began gently.

"Did you ever intend for Elena Ashford to die?"

"No."

"Did you order Victor Hale to kill her?"

"No."

"Did you order anyone to kill Isaiah Carter?"

"No."

"Did you have a consensual relationship with Tessa Hale?"

Adrian paused.

"Yes."

Tessa closed her eyes.

Bell guided him through the foundation transactions.

Adrian admitted moving money through Halcyon but described it as an executive strategy to fund private investments that would later benefit the foundation.

Shaw's expression barely changed.

Then Bell asked about Damon.

"How would you describe his condition after his wife's death?"

"Broken."

Damon did not react.

"He drank heavily. He isolated himself. He became obsessed with the idea that he had failed her."

"Did that obsession worsen recently?"

"Yes."

Bell turned toward the jury.

"This case is the result."

On cross-examination, Shaw approached without notes.

"Mr. Vale, you say Tessa consented."

"She did."

"Why did you pay her rent through a shell company?"

"Privacy."

"Why did you arrange legal work for the adoption agency that falsified her child's records?"

"I didn't."

Shaw displayed billing entries.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"Someone at my firm did."

"Your initials approved the invoice."

"I approved hundreds."

"You also say Halcyon investments were for the foundation. Where are the returns?"

Adrian shifted.

"The investments failed."

"All six point eight million dollars?"

"Markets carry risk."

"One investment purchased a yacht."

Bell objected.

The judge overruled.

Shaw displayed ownership documents.

The yacht belonged to a company controlled by Adrian.

A few jurors looked at him differently.

Shaw continued.

"You testified you never ordered Isaiah Carter killed."

"Correct."

"At the Ashford gate, you said you didn't know Victor would 'go that far.' What did you mean?"

Adrian's expression hardened.

"I was referring to intimidation."

"You also called Isaiah a problem."

"I called many people problems."

"Elena too?"

Bell objected.

Overruled.

Adrian said, "She was disrupting the company."

Shaw stepped closer.

"Did you tell Victor to solve that problem?"

"I told him to stop her from reaching the board."

"How?"

"I didn't specify."

"Because you didn't want to know?"

"Because I expected him to use judgment."

"His judgment included sabotaging a car."

"I didn't know that."

"After the crash, you learned the car had been sabotaged."

"No."

Shaw held up an email recovered from Adrian's laptop.

FROM: Victor Hale

SUBJECT: CLEANUP

Greer did what we discussed. Tire failed too soon. Need hospital contained.

Adrian stared at it.

Bell stood.

"Foundation?"

"Authenticated yesterday," Shaw said. "Recovered from an archived mail server after Mr. Hale provided the encryption key."

The judge allowed it provisionally.

The courtroom erupted in whispers.

Shaw waited.

Then she asked, "You received this at 10:42 a.m., thirty-seven minutes after Elena's crash."

Adrian's face had gone pale.

"I don't remember."

"You replied seven minutes later."

She displayed his answer.

Handle it. No names. No records.

Damon felt Naomi's hand close around his wrist.

Shaw asked, "Were you still unaware?"

Adrian did not answer.

"Mr. Vale?"

"I was in shock."

"So shocked you gave instructions to destroy records?"

"I was protecting the company."

"There it is again."

Bell objected.

Sustained.

Shaw changed course.

"Did you tell the hospital administrator to classify Elena as never regaining consciousness?"

Adrian's head snapped up.

"I did not."

Another email appeared.

Please ensure family receives standard trauma summary. No statements from patient to staff included.

Adrian breathed through his nose.

Shaw said, "Elena did regain consciousness. She spoke to Maria Reyes."

"I didn't know."

"Yet you asked the hospital to omit patient statements."

"Legal privacy."

"Whose privacy?"

No answer.

Shaw returned to the defense table.

Then stopped.

"One final question. You have repeatedly said you were protecting the company. Was Elena Ashford's life less important than Ashford Holdings?"

Bell rose.

"Objection."

Before the judge ruled, Adrian answered.

"She was going to destroy everything."

Silence.

Shaw turned.

"That wasn't my question."

Adrian realized too late that anger had taken control.

He looked at Damon.

"You know what she was like. Once she decided she was right, she would burn down the whole structure."

Damon said nothing.

Adrian continued, no longer speaking to the prosecutor.

"And you would have let her. You always chose her eventually."

Damon's chest tightened.

Eventually.

That word contained the whole tragedy.

He had loved Elena.

He had simply made her wait too long to be believed.

The judge ordered Adrian to answer only questions.

Shaw faced him.

"Did you consider Elena a threat?"

Adrian stared at the jury.

Then said quietly, "Yes."

"No further questions."

Closing arguments began the next day.

Bell emphasized doubt.

Shaw emphasized pattern.

Not a single dramatic act, but a chain.

Steal.

Threaten.

Discredit.

Silence.

Destroy evidence.

Repeat.

The jury deliberated for two days.

On the third afternoon, the courtroom clerk announced they had reached a verdict.

Naomi sat beside Tessa.

Damon sat behind them.

Adrian entered.

For once, he did not look at anyone.

The foreperson stood.

On conspiracy to commit fraud: guilty.

On wiretapping: guilty.

On obstruction: guilty.

On conspiracy connected to Elena Ashford's death: guilty.

Tessa began crying.

Naomi held her.

The clerk continued.

On conspiracy connected to Isaiah Carter's death: guilty.

Naomi made no sound.

Her shoulders simply folded.

Damon caught her before she slipped from the bench.

Adrian closed his eyes.

The final count was read.

Guilty.

The judge thanked the jury.

Reporters surged outside.

No one in the family moved.

Zuri was not there.

Damon and Naomi had agreed that a child did not need to watch justice arrive in handcuffs.

Damon looked at Adrian one last time.

There was no triumph.

May you like

Only an ending.

And endings, he had finally learned, were not the same thing as healing.
