Chapter 19 - Reclaiming the Future

Lucy giggled,

running across the polished floor and grabbing Gabriel's large,

calloused hand.

“You don't know how to dance,

silly!” she declared.

“Then you'll just have to show me,

” Gabriel smiled,

bowing slightly like a true gentleman.

The string quartet was gone.

There were no crystal chandeliers blazing with light,

no wealthy socialites whispering in silk dresses,

no federal agents watching from the sidelines.

Just the soft hum of the autumn wind outside and the gentle sound of footsteps on wooden floors.

I stood by the doorway,

watching the man who had once been my greatest enemy waltz gracefully with my daughter.

The silver medal rested safely on the mantelpiece in the study upstairs—not as a reminder of tragedy,

but as a badge of survival.

Gabriel caught my eye across the room.

He didn't stop dancing,

but he smiled—a warm,

genuine smile that reached his eyes.

He extended his free hand toward me.

I didn't hesitate.

I crossed the floor,

May you like

slipping my hand into his,

and joined them in the center of the room.
