Chapter 6 - The Secret Ledger of Betrayal

The name hung in the quiet study like a physical blow.

“Marcus?” I whispered,

shaking my head in disbelief.

“Marcus is a civil servant.

He runs ethics committees.

”

“Marcus runs a syndicate within a syndicate,

” Gabriel corrected bitterly.

He walked over to his massive mahogany desk,

unlocked a hidden drawer with a brass key,

and pulled out a thick,

leather-bound ledger.

He tossed it onto the coffee table in front of me.

I stared at the worn cover.

“Read it,

” Gabriel commanded.

With trembling fingers,

I opened the first page.

The handwriting was meticulous,

filled with financial codes,

offshore account numbers,

and signatures.

Among them was Marcus Caruso’s distinctive signature.

And right beside it were records of payoffs to the very precinct that had investigated David's death.

“Five years ago,

David discovered that Marcus was embezzling federal infrastructure funds through Caruso Holdings,

” Gabriel explained,

his voice turning heavy with regret.

“David came to me with the evidence.

We arranged a meeting to hand Marcus over to federal authorities quietly.

But Marcus found out.

He torched the warehouse before we could meet.

”

“If you knew all of this,

why didn't you stop him?” I demanded,

tears blurring the words on the page.

“Because Marcus held my sister's children hostage,

” Gabriel roared,

slamming his fist onto the desk.

“He threatened to slaughter my entire family if I uttered a single word.

I had to play along,

Elena.

I had to build my own case against him in the shadows,

waiting for the right moment to strike.

”

I looked up from the ledger,

searching his face for any sign of deceit.

The lines around his eyes were etched with genuine agony.

For five years,

I had blamed the wrong man.

For five years,

Gabriel Caruso had been fighting the same war from the inside.

“The silver medal,

” I whispered,

realization dawning on me.

“David gave it to you?”

“He handed it to me the night before he disappeared,

” Gabriel said softly.

May you like

“He told me to keep it safe until the truth could finally be brought to light.
