Chapter 9 - Unearthing the Past

Marcus glanced toward the open study door.

He took a casual step backward,

his hand sliding toward the inner pocket of his jacket.

“Don't even think about it,

Marcus,

” Gabriel warned,

his voice like grinding ice.

“Every exit is sealed.

Your bodyguards at the front gate were relieved of their weapons twenty minutes ago.

”

Marcus froze,

his hand remaining inside his jacket.

Then he slowly withdrew it,

holding his palms up in a gesture of false surrender.

“You think you've won,

cousin,

” Marcus said,

his voice dropping its polite veneer,

revealing the venom underneath.

“You think this bitter widow and her brat can bring down a future attorney general?”

“They don't have to,

” Gabriel replied,

tossing the leather ledger onto the desk.

“The federal prosecutors already have encrypted copies of this ledger.

It was uploaded to the cloud the moment Elena stepped into my ballroom tonight.

”

Marcus’s composure finally fractured.

His face twisted into a mask of pure rage.

“You traitorous bastard!” Marcus lunged forward,

drawing a concealed silver-plated revolver from his shoulder holster.

Before he could raise the barrel toward Gabriel,

I acted on pure instinct.

I grabbed the heavy crystal bourbon decanter from the desk and hurled it with all my might.

It struck Marcus squarely in the forearm.

The gun flew from his grip,

clattering loudly against the hardwood floor.

Gabriel closed the distance in a fraction of a second.

He slammed Marcus against the mahogany bookshelf,

pressing a heavy forearm against his throat.

“It's over,

Marcus,

” Gabriel hissed.

May you like

“The empire you tried to steal is crumbling.
