Chapter 4 - Emma Remembered the Blue House

Marco fired once into the ceiling above the attacker.
Not to hit him.
To force him back.
It worked.
The masked man disappeared through the smoke.
By the time security cleared the west wing, he was gone.
But Emma was no longer thinking about him.
She was thinking about the words.
Elena should have kept her daughter out of this.
Her mother.
The blue room.
Nico.
The memory returned in pieces.
Not cleanly.
Not kindly.
Rain.
A coastal house.
Sofia lying on a bed with a newborn beside her.
Elena locking the door.
Emma shouting because nobody would explain anything.
Then men outside.
Her mother pushing a baby into Emma’s arms.
“Take him to the boathouse.”
Emma had obeyed.
She remembered that now.
She had carried infant Nico through rain.
He had been crying.
She had sung the only melody she knew would calm frightened children.
The five notes her mother always sang.
That was why Nico remembered her voice.
Not because Emma was his mother.
Because for one night, when he was three months old, she had been the person holding him while the world around him fell apart.
Emma told Luca everything she could remember.
Nico listened from Sofia’s side.
When Emma finished, he said, “I knew you.”
She looked at him.
“Yes.”
His small face relaxed.
That mattered more than she expected.
Sofia reached into a drawer in the nursery.
Inside was an old photograph.
Elena.
Sofia.
Baby Nico.
And Emma.
Emma stared at herself.
Twenty-one.
Wet hair.
Holding the child.
The date on the corner was six years earlier.
Proof.
Luca turned to Sofia.
“Who attacked the house?”
Sofia hesitated.
“Men working for a company called Bellini Strategic Holdings.”
Belini.
Marco’s expression hardened.
“Her family.”
Sofia nodded.
“But she wasn’t alone.”
“Who was?”
Sofia looked directly at Luca.
“Your father.”
Silence.
Luca did not blink.
“Vittorio?”
“Yes.”
“He was dead.”
“No.”
“He died twelve years ago.”
Sofia shook her head.
“The man in that coffin was not our father.”
Rosa sat down slowly.
Luca’s voice changed.
“Explain.”
Sofia did.
Vittorio had staged his death after an internal war inside the Moretti organization.
He believed someone close to the family was selling names, accounts, and routes to federal investigators and rival crews.
He disappeared to find them.
Years later, he discovered the Bellini family had been moving money through Moretti companies.
Sofia learned too much.
So did Elena.
Alessandro helped them escape.
Belini learned Sofia was pregnant.
That changed the value of everything.
Nico would eventually inherit Alessandro’s share of the family trusts.
Belini had no legal claim.
Unless she became his mother on paper.
Luca stared at Sofia.
“She replaced you.”
“She erased me.”
“And Alessandro?”
“He spent years pretending the lie was true because they threatened Nico.”
Marco looked toward the floor.
“He died trying to undo it.”
Sofia nodded.
“That’s what I believe.”
Emma asked, “What did my mother carry out of the house?”
Sofia’s face changed.
“A ledger.”
“What ledger?”
“Every payment Vittorio traced to the Bellini network.”
“Where is it?”
“I don’t know.”
Emma remembered Belini’s last words.
Ask her what Elena made her carry.
Then another memory surfaced.
Not the baby.
Something else.
A small metal box.
Her mother pressing it into Emma’s hands after Nico was safe.
“Hide this where nobody in their world will look.”
Emma looked at Luca.
“I carried something else.”
“What?”
“A box.”
“Where?”
Emma closed her eyes.
She saw rain.
A bus station.
A locker.
And a number.
“214.”
Marco was already moving.
Luca caught his arm.
“No.”
Marco looked at him.
“Boss?”
“If Belini knows Emma is remembering, the locker is being watched.”
Sofia whispered, “Then we make them think she still remembers nothing.”
Luca looked at Emma.
Emma looked back.
For the first time that night, she understood what he was asking before he spoke.
Become bait.
May you like
She answered first.
“Do it.”
