Chapter 10 - The Last Moretti Secret

The boy in the photograph was named Gabriel.

Vittorio’s son from an affair.

Luca’s half brother.

Sofia’s half brother.

Ten years old when Vittorio staged his death.

Thirty-two now.

Alive.

For one terrible second, Luca expected another enemy.

Another hidden heir.

Another war.

Vittorio shook his head.

“Gabriel wants nothing from you.”

“Then why hide him?”

“Because Rosa knew.”

That was the last missing piece.

Rosa had discovered Gabriel before Vittorio staged his death.

She threatened to expose him publicly and use the scandal to fracture Vittorio’s control.

So Vittorio took the boy with him.

Not because Gabriel was part of the criminal network.

Because he was leverage.

Elena’s recording confirmed it.

Gabriel had lived under another name in Spain.

He had never joined the Moretti organization.

Never taken money from the family.

Never asked to return.

Luca watched the photograph for a long time.

Then closed the file.

“No more hidden relatives.”

Vittorio almost smiled.

Luca did not.

“You’re going with the agents.”

The smile disappeared.

Sofia looked at her brother.

Vittorio nodded once.

He understood.

He had ordered Alessandro’s death.

He had helped Elena disappear.

He had allowed his children to mourn him for twelve years.

Whatever reasons he once had no longer mattered more than what he had done.

He left without resistance.

By sunrise, Moretti House felt different.

Quieter.

Not safer yet.

But honest.

Sofia sat in the kitchen with Nico asleep against her shoulder.

For the first time, mother and son had hours instead of seconds.

Emma stood by the window.

Luca joined her.

“You remembered everything?”

“Enough.”

“The blue house?”

“Yes.”

“Your mother?”

Emma looked down at the silver bracelet.

“I’m angry with her.”

“You’re allowed.”

“I understand why she stayed away.”

“You’re allowed to hate that too.”

Emma looked at him.

That answer surprised her.

Luca had spent most of his life around people who demanded one emotion at a time.

Loyal or disloyal.

Family or enemy.

Love or hate.

Emma was beginning to understand that truth was rarely that clean.

“What happens to Belini?”

“She testifies.”

“And after?”

“She answers for what she did.”

No threat.

No dramatic promise.

Just certainty.

Emma nodded.

“And Rosa?”

“The same.”

“Antonio?”

“The same.”

She smiled faintly.

“You’re becoming repetitive.”

“For once, I’m trying.”

Across the room, Sofia woke Nico.

The boy blinked at Emma.

Then smiled.

“Mommy Emma.”

Emma laughed through sudden tears.

Sofia did too.

“We may need to work on that.”

Nico considered this.

Then pointed to Sofia.

“Mommy.”

He pointed to Emma.

“Other Mommy.”

Luca looked away to hide a smile.

Emma noticed.

“Don’t encourage him.”

“I said nothing.”

“You didn’t have to.”

Later that morning, Marco brought the final corrected records.

Nico Moretti.

Mother: Sofia Moretti.

Father: Alessandro Moretti.

No Belini.

No forged history.

No lie.

Sofia signed.

Then stopped.

“What about the trust?”

Luca looked at the papers.

Nico’s inheritance had been one reason the conspiracy lasted so long.

Money.

Control.

A child turned into an asset.

Luca tore the old trust in half.

Marco stared.

“Boss.”

“Draft another.”

“With what structure?”

Luca looked at Nico.

“One where nobody gains control because a child loses a parent.”

Marco nodded.

That was enough.

Three months later, the west wing was no longer sealed.

The nursery became Nico’s room when he stayed at the estate.

Sofia moved into a small house nearby.

Close enough to heal.

Far enough to breathe.

Emma stopped wearing a maid’s uniform.

Not because Luca asked her to.

Because the Moretti restitution fund—built from recovered stolen accounts—paid the families damaged by Rosa and Antonio’s network.

Emma became its administrator.

She accepted only after reading every page of the contract herself.

Luca respected that.

One evening, Emma found him in the conservatory.

The same room where another woman had once opened her arms and demanded Nico choose.

Now the room was empty.

No audience.

No test.

Luca held out the silver bracelet.

Emma frowned.

“I thought I had that.”

“You did.”

He turned it over.

The clasp had been repaired.

The blue stone reset.

“My mother’s last gift.”

“I know.”

“Then why did you take it?”

“To fix what my family broke.”

Emma looked at him.

The words meant more than the bracelet.

He knew that.

She knew that.

Neither rushed to explain it.

Upstairs, Nico began humming five familiar notes.

Sofia joined him.

Emma smiled.

Luca listened.

For seven years, that melody had belonged to disappearance.

Now it meant someone had come home.
