Chapter 7 - Belini Was Never the Prisoner

The old marina had been abandoned for eleven years.
The Morettis still owned it through a shell company.
Of course they did.
Luca arrived with Vittorio and Emma.
Marco stayed hidden with a team across the water.
The drive was in Luca’s coat.
A duplicate was with Marco.
Vittorio had insisted.
“Never carry the only copy of anything that can destroy a family.”
Luca looked at him.
“Useful lesson. Twelve years late.”
They entered the warehouse.
Antonio stood beneath one hanging light.
Belini stood beside him.
No restraints.
No fear.
Red coat.
Perfect hair.
A pistol in her hand.
Emma stared.
Vittorio had been right.
Belini smiled faintly.
“Hello, Emma.”
Luca’s expression did not move.
“You staged the call.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To get the drive.”
Antonio looked toward her.
“You said we were trading.”
Belini did not look at him.
“We are.”
Vittorio laughed.
Antonio’s eyes narrowed.
“What’s funny?”
“You still think she needs you.”
Belini raised the pistol slightly.
“I don’t need either of you.”
Luca understood.
Belini had spent years between two older men.
Antonio controlling the criminal network.
Vittorio controlling the evidence.
She had learned from both.
Then decided to inherit everything.
“The trust,” Luca said.
Belini looked at him.
“If you had signed Friday, I would have controlled enough Moretti assets to move the money before anyone found the old accounts.”
“And Nico?”
Her face cooled.
“He was the problem.”
Emma stepped forward.
Belini turned the gun toward her.
Luca’s voice sharpened.
“Don’t.”
Belini smiled.
“There it is.”
“What?”
“The reason I never liked her.”
Emma stared.
Belini continued.
“You look at her before you decide whether to be cruel.”
Luca gave no reaction.
Belini’s smile vanished.
Antonio interrupted.
“The drive.”
Luca removed it.
“Bracelet first.”
Antonio held up the silver bracelet.
Emma’s chest tightened.
Her mother’s last gift.
Antonio tossed it onto a table.
Luca placed the drive beside it.
Nobody moved.
Then Vittorio said:
“Elena left one more copy.”
Antonio froze.
That was enough.
Luca saw it.
So did Belini.
She slowly turned toward Antonio.
“You told me there was only one ledger.”
Antonio’s face changed.
Vittorio smiled.
“I lied.”
Belini’s gun shifted.
Toward Antonio.
He moved first.
One shot.
Metal exploded from the ceiling beam.
Marco’s team entered through three doors.
Antonio dropped his weapon.
Belini ran.
Emma saw her heading toward the rear exit.
So did Luca.
He did not chase.
Marco did.
Luca went to the table and picked up the bracelet.
He handed it to Emma.
“It’s yours.”
She closed her fingers around it.
Across the warehouse, Antonio laughed.
“You think arresting us fixes anything?”
Luca turned.
Antonio’s smile widened.
“Ask your father who ordered Alessandro killed.”
Vittorio became still.
Luca looked at him.
Antonio continued.
“It wasn’t me.”
Sofia’s husband.
Nico’s father.
Dead eighteen months.
Luca’s voice came out flat.
“Who?”
Antonio looked directly at Vittorio.
“Tell him.”
May you like
Vittorio did not.
That silence was the answer.
