Chapter 8 - Vittorio Ordered the Death

Nobody spoke during the drive back.

Not Luca.

Not Emma.

Not Vittorio.

At the estate, Sofia was waiting.

So was Nico.

Luca asked Rosa to take the boy upstairs.

Sofia stopped her.

“No.”

Luca looked at her.

“He is six.”

“He has spent six years living inside lies created by adults who decided what he could survive.”

Luca understood.

But he still waited until Nico was out of hearing range.

Then he faced his father.

“Did you order Alessandro killed?”

Vittorio did not deny it.

Sofia slapped him.

Hard.

He accepted that too.

“Why?”

Vittorio looked older than he had at the bus station.

“Because I believed he betrayed you.”

Sofia’s voice broke.

“He was protecting our son.”

“I know that now.”

“You knew nothing then.”

“No.”

“You ordered him murdered anyway.”

Vittorio closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Luca stared at him.

“What evidence?”

“Antonio gave me financial records. Calls. Transfers.”

“All false?”

“Most.”

“And you never checked?”

“I was hiding from a network I believed had already killed Elena.”

Emma interrupted.

“My mother was alive then.”

Vittorio looked at her.

“Yes.”

“And you knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then stop saying you believed things. You had people. Money. Information. You chose.”

Vittorio said nothing.

That was the closest thing to agreement he could give.

Marco entered with the decrypted ledger.

The bracelet cipher worked.

The files were worse than expected.

Payments.

Judges.

Police.

Companies.

Political donors.

Private security contractors.

Every transfer passed through shell structures Antonio controlled.

But one folder mattered most.

ALESSANDRO.

Inside were altered bank records used to convince Vittorio his son-in-law had sold Moretti routes.

Then came the final authorization.

Vittorio’s encrypted approval.

Luca read it once.

Then again.

Sofia looked away.

Vittorio said, “I thought I was protecting the family.”

Luca’s voice was quiet.

“That sentence has buried more people than bullets.”

Marco opened another file.

ELENA.

Emma stopped breathing.

A video.

Four years old.

Her mother.

Alive.

Older.

Thin.

Sitting in front of a plain wall.

Emma stepped toward the screen.

Elena looked directly into the camera.

“If Emma ever sees this, then I failed to come home.”

Emma’s knees nearly gave out.

Luca moved beside her but did not touch her.

Elena continued.

“I stayed away because Antonio believed my daughter died the night of the blue house. Vittorio helped keep that lie alive. I hated him for it. I also used it.”

Emma covered her mouth.

“I wanted to come back every day.”

A pause.

“I chose her life over my place in it.”

Tears blurred Emma’s vision.

Elena explained the bracelet.

The ledger.

Sofia.

Nico.

Then one final thing.

“Belini is not the architect.”

Everyone in the room froze.

“She is dangerous. She is ambitious. She helped Antonio because she believed he would give her control of the Moretti trust.”

Elena leaned closer.

“But Antonio serves someone else.”

Marco stopped the video.

Luca turned.

“Why?”

Marco’s face had changed.

“Because the next file just opened.”

A photograph appeared.

Antonio.

Belini.

And a third person.

A Moretti.

May you like

Sofia whispered the name first.

“Rosa?”
