Chapter 9 - Aunt Rosa Had Started the War

Rosa did not run.
That made it worse.
She came downstairs when Luca called her.
Calm.
Gray dress.
Pearls.
The woman who had comforted him at funerals.
Raised Sofia after their mother died.
Held Nico’s hand into the ballroom.
She looked at the photograph.
Then at Vittorio.
“You finally found it.”
Sofia stared.
“Aunt Rosa?”
Rosa sat.
“Yes.”
Luca remained standing.
“Start at the beginning.”
Rosa folded her hands.
“Your father.”
Vittorio looked at her.
She did not look back.
“He believed the family belonged to him because he was born male.”
Sofia’s expression hardened.
“This is about inheritance?”
“No.”
Rosa looked at her.
“It began there.”
Their grandfather had divided the family holdings unevenly.
Vittorio received control.
Rosa received property.
No voting power.
No authority.
She spent decades watching men make decisions she believed she could make better.
Then she discovered the shell companies Antonio used.
Instead of exposing him, she partnered with him.
Money first.
Influence later.
When Vittorio discovered missing accounts, he staged his death to investigate.
Rosa adapted.
When Sofia found records linking Rosa to Antonio, Rosa ordered her watched.
Belini entered later.
Young.
Ambitious.
Connected to a family Rosa needed for banking access.
“Belini wanted Luca,” Rosa said.
Belini, now under guard in another wing, had already begun talking.
Rosa continued.
“I wanted her access.”
Emma stared.
“And my mother?”
Rosa’s eyes lowered.
“Elena saw me with Antonio.”
“You had her shot.”
“No.”
“Stop.”
Emma’s voice cut through the room.
“No more careful words.”
Rosa looked at her.
“I told Antonio Elena had the ledger.”
That was enough.
Sofia stood.
“You destroyed all of us.”
Rosa’s composure cracked.
“I was trying to take back what should have been mine.”
“You took my son.”
“I protected Nico.”
“You erased his mother.”
Rosa had no answer.
Luca finally spoke.
“Alessandro?”
Rosa looked toward Vittorio.
“That was Antonio’s best work. He made Vittorio believe Alessandro had betrayed the family.”
Vittorio’s jaw tightened.
Rosa smiled sadly.
“But your father still gave the order.”
“Yes,” Luca said. “He did.”
Nobody was allowed to escape their own choice anymore.
Not Rosa.
Not Vittorio.
Not Belini.
Not Antonio.
Marco entered with two agents from a federal financial crimes task force.
Vittorio looked at Luca.
“You brought them here?”
“I did.”
“You’re giving them the ledger?”
“I am.”
“That ledger can dismantle half the family.”
Luca’s expression did not change.
“Then half the family should not survive.”
Rosa stared at him.
“You would destroy your own name?”
“No.”
Luca looked around the room.
“I’m deciding what the name means.”
The agents arrested Rosa.
Antonio was already in custody.
Belini had agreed to cooperate in exchange for protection.
It would not erase what she had done.
But it would expose the accounts, forged birth records, clinic payments, and the people who helped hide Sofia.
Vittorio remained.
No handcuffs yet.
That bothered Sofia.
“Why is he still standing?”
Marco answered.
“Because there is one last file.”
Elena’s final recording.
Emma looked up.
Marco pressed play.
Elena appeared again.
This time she was crying.
“There is one thing Vittorio never told Luca.”
Vittorio closed his eyes.
Elena continued.
“The night Vittorio staged his death, he did not disappear alone.”
Luca’s face hardened.
“He took someone with him.”
The image changed.
A child.
Ten years old.
Dark hair.
Luca stared.
Sofia whispered, “Who is that?”
May you like
Vittorio finally spoke.
“Your brother.”
