Chapter 2 - The Photograph Belini Recognized Too Quickly

Belini was the first person to look away.
That mattered.
Luca still held the photograph in both hands.
Emma at twenty-two.
A Prague café.
A silver-haired man beside her.
Alessandro Moretti.
Dead twelve years.
Alive six years ago.
Impossible.
Unless someone had lied.
Luca looked at Belini.
“You recognized him.”
“No.”
“You stood before I said his name.”
“I recognized the photograph.”
“You had never seen it.”
Belini’s lips tightened.
Carlo leaned forward.
“This is becoming absurd.”
Luca did not look at him.
“Matteo.”
“Yes, boss.”
“Take their phones.”
Belini laughed.
“You cannot be serious.”
Matteo was already moving.
The interpreter surrendered his phone first.
Viktor followed.
Carlo hesitated.
That was enough to make two guards step closer.
Belini placed hers on the table last.
Emma remained standing beside Luca.
She wanted to disappear.
Instead Luca turned the photograph over.
Nothing.
No writing.
No date.
No clue.
Except the man.
“Where was this taken?” he asked.
“Prague.”
“When?”
“Six years ago.”
“How did you meet him?”
Emma swallowed.
“I was working for a compliance firm.”
“Doing what?”
“Reviewing shell-company structures for a bank investigation.”
Carlo looked at her sharply.
Luca noticed.
“What bank?”
Emma hesitated.
“Novak International.”
Carlo’s face changed again.
This time Luca saw it clearly.
“Uncle?”
Carlo recovered.
“Novak handled half of Central Europe.”
Emma looked at him.
“Then you know why it mattered.”
Luca’s gaze sharpened.
“Explain.”
Emma placed the napkin beside the photograph.
“Alexander approached me after someone accessed our audit files.”
“Why you?”
“I had noticed the intrusion.”
“You told him?”
“No. He told me.”
Belini stared at her.
Emma continued.
“He knew which accounts had been altered before my team did.”
Carlo spoke too quickly.
“What accounts?”
Silence.
Emma looked at him.
“You already know.”
Carlo’s mouth tightened.
Luca leaned back.
“Continue.”
“Alexander said someone was using Moretti-linked holding companies to move money through Prague, Vienna and Cyprus.”
Matteo’s expression hardened.
Belini looked at Carlo.
Only for a second.
Emma saw it.
So did Luca.
“What did he ask you to do?” Luca said.
“Nothing at first.”
“And later?”
“He taught me the cipher.”
“Why?”
Emma shook her head.
“I thought it was a way to mark altered ledger entries.”
Luca looked at the napkin again.
“It was.”
Emma froze.
He turned the paper.
“My father used this offset for one purpose.”
“What?”
“To identify a false transaction without naming the person who created it.”
The room became quiet.
Luca looked at Emma.
“So six years ago my father was still tracking stolen money.”
Carlo said, “Or someone copied his system.”
Luca looked at him.
“Then why are you sweating?”
Carlo went still.
Matteo’s phone vibrated.
He had been searching the confiscated devices.
“Boss.”
“What?”
He placed Belini’s phone on the table.
One deleted photo had been recovered.
It was the same Prague café.
Different angle.
Same day.
Alessandro.
Emma.
And a third person reflected in the glass behind them.
Belini.
Emma stopped breathing.
Luca slowly raised his eyes.
“You were there.”
Belini said nothing.
The engagement dinner ended in that moment.
Not with shouting.
Not with violence.
May you like
With one photograph.
And a woman in red who had just lost the right to lie badly.
