Chapter 4 - Why Alessandro Chose Emma

The private dining room remained locked until sunrise.

Nobody left.

Nobody slept.

Luca did not ask how his father died first.

He asked why Emma had been chosen.

Carlo answered that one.

Because Belini would not.

“Alessandro needed someone outside the family.”

Luca’s eyes stayed on him.

“Why her?”

“Because she could read patterns.”

Emma frowned.

Carlo looked at her.

“You were not random.”

That bothered her more than anything else.

“I thought I met him by accident.”

“You did not.”

Emma stared.

Carlo continued.

“Your compliance firm had been reviewing one of our laundering routes.”

Luca’s face hardened.

“Whose route?”

Carlo did not answer.

Emma did.

“Yours?”

Carlo looked at her.

Close enough.

Luca leaned forward.

“My father planted her there?”

“No.”

“He found her there.”

Carlo rubbed both hands over his face.

“He had been watching the firm because someone inside the Moretti network was deleting traces faster than auditors could find them.”

Belini whispered, “Carlo.”

He ignored her now.

“He saw Emma flag a transaction three senior auditors missed.”

Emma remembered.

A Cyprus transfer.

Tiny compared to the others.

But duplicated twelve seconds apart.

She had caught it because the timestamp was wrong.

“Alexander said the same thing,” she whispered.

Luca looked at her.

“What?”

“He said people hide large thefts behind small mistakes.”

That was Alessandro.

Luca knew it.

His father had said versions of that his whole childhood.

Carlo continued.

“He decided you were useful.”

Emma’s jaw tightened.

“Useful.”

“Yes.”

“Not safe.”

“No.”

Luca’s eyes went cold.

“Choose your words carefully.”

Carlo gave him a tired look.

“Your father was protecting her.”

Emma laughed once.

“By teaching me Mafia code?”

“By making sure you could recognize her if she ever reached you.”

That changed everything.

Luca looked at the napkin.

Emma did too.

The cipher was not merely a tool.

It was an introduction.

A credential.

A message from a dead father to a son.

Trust this person.

Belini stood suddenly.

“None of this matters.”

Luca looked at her.

“It matters to me.”

“Your father manipulated everyone.”

“Possibly.”

“He lied to you for six years.”

“Twelve.”

Belini stopped.

Luca’s voice remained calm.

“He let me bury him.”

No one answered.

Emma saw the pain only because she was close enough to notice what everyone else missed.

His thumb moved once against the edge of the photograph.

That was all.

Carlo said, “He had no choice.”

Luca turned.

“Everyone says that before describing a choice.”

Carlo looked away.

Matteo returned from a side office carrying a printed report.

“We traced the Prague account activity.”

Luca took it.

Emma leaned closer.

The same six-digit offset pattern appeared beside several transfers.

Her cipher.

Alessandro’s cipher.

Each marked transaction had been reversed within forty-eight hours.

Except one.

Forty million dollars.

Moved from a Moretti reserve into an entity called Argento Trust.

Luca frowned.

“I never authorized this.”

Carlo said nothing.

Belini did.

“That was your father’s escape fund.”

Luca looked at her.

“You said you didn’t know where he was.”

“I didn’t.”

“You knew he had an escape fund.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Belini’s eyes hardened.

“Because I helped create it.”

Emma stared.

So did Matteo.

Luca’s voice became almost quiet.

“You helped my father fake his death.”

Belini closed her eyes.

There it was.

The first full confession.

“Yes.”

Luca stood.

“Why?”

Belini looked at him.

“Because he discovered someone inside your family was preparing to kill you.”

Luca stopped.

Emma felt the room change again.

May you like

Belini continued.

“Your father disappeared because staying dead was the only way he could find out who.”
