Chapter 8 - The Ledger Luca Was Never Supposed to See

Carlo talked because the evidence had made silence useless.
Not because he regretted anything.
That was clear.
“Giancarlo arranged Vienna,” he said.
“Viktor provided the people.”
“And you?” Luca asked.
Carlo looked at him.
“I provided the meeting.”
Emma felt sick.
“You lured Alessandro there.”
“Yes.”
Belini whispered, “You told my father where he would be.”
Carlo ignored her.
Luca’s voice stayed level.
“Did you see him die?”
“No.”
“Did you order it?”
“No.”
“Did you know it would happen?”
Carlo hesitated.
“Yes.”
That was enough.
Matteo stepped closer.
Luca raised one hand.
Not yet.
He looked at Emma.
“The ledger.”
Emma returned to the laptop.
Alessandro had left one final encrypted directory.
It required two keys.
The cipher.
And a phrase.
Emma tried everything she remembered.
Nothing.
Then Luca said quietly, “Never accuse until you can finish the accusation.”
Emma looked at him.
“What?”
“My father used to say it.”
She typed the phrase.
The folder opened.
Alessandro had designed it for both of them.
Emma felt that in her bones.
One person who knew the code.
One person who knew the man.
Inside were scanned ledgers.
The original Moretti reserve accounts.
Transfers spanning twenty years.
Carlo.
Giancarlo.
Viktor.
Judges.
Ports.
Construction.
Security.
Then something new.
Payments out.
Not in.
Alessandro had been quietly reimbursing victims and buying back compromised companies through anonymous trusts.
Luca read for several minutes.
“He was dismantling it.”
Carlo laughed bitterly.
“Yes.”
Emma looked at him.
“That is why you wanted him gone.”
“He was erasing the machine that kept us alive.”
“He was cleaning it.”
“He was weakening it.”
Luca looked at Carlo.
“And me?”
Carlo held his gaze.
“You were becoming him.”
That was the real reason.
Not succession.
Not loyalty.
Fear.
Carlo believed Luca would complete Alessandro’s work.
So the engagement dinner plan was not spontaneous.
It was a second succession operation.
Incapacitate Luca.
Keep Matteo trapped inside.
Create confusion.
Move the offshore reserve.
Trigger emergency authority.
Place Carlo back in control.
Belini’s marriage would give the Vescari family legal access.
Viktor would secure foreign money.
The entire machine would reset.
Emma opened one final ledger page.
A transfer scheduled for tonight.
Recipient:
CARLO MORETTI SUCCESSION TRUST.
Amount:
Two hundred million dollars.
Status:
Pending biometric confirmation.
Luca looked at Carlo.
“You needed me alive.”
Carlo nodded.
“Long enough.”
Emma understood.
The drug combination.
Not immediate death.
Medical emergency.
Hospitalization.
A biometric confirmation window during controlled chaos.
Matteo would stay with Luca.
Belini would access his phone.
Carlo would move the funds.
Emma looked at Belini.
“You needed his face or fingerprint.”
Belini looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
Luca’s expression hardened.
“And if I woke up?”
Carlo answered.
“We would already control enough to make your return irrelevant.”
Silence.
Then Emma noticed one more field.
Secondary approval required.
User:
A. MORETTI.
She frowned.
“That can’t be right.”
Luca looked.
His father’s authorization.
Still active.
Six years after his real death.
Carlo went pale.
Belini stared.
Matteo said, “Someone has been using Alessandro’s credentials.”
Emma looked at Luca.
Not Carlo.
Not Belini.
Someone else.
The conspiracy was almost solved.
Almost.
Then the laptop displayed a live login notification.
May you like
A. MORETTI had just accessed the account.
From New York.
