Chapter 6 - The Man Who Walked Out During the Truth

Viktor Karev had disappeared eleven minutes earlier.

One guard had left the service corridor unsecured during a medical call.

Not an accident.

Someone had sent the guard a false emergency message.

The sender used Matteo’s internal credentials.

Matteo looked furious.

Luca looked interested.

That was worse.

“Inside access,” he said.

Emma nodded.

“Again.”

Same pattern.

Years earlier.

Now.

Someone borrowing trusted identities.

Luca turned toward Carlo and Belini.

“Which of you gave Viktor access?”

Belini shook her head.

Carlo said nothing.

Matteo received a location ping from Viktor’s discarded phone.

Warehouse district.

Brooklyn waterfront.

Luca stood.

Emma did too.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“No?”

“You stay.”

“He knows about Prague.”

“That is exactly why.”

Emma folded her arms.

“Your father chose me because I follow money.”

“This is not money anymore.”

“It always is.”

Luca stared at her.

For half a second, something almost like amusement appeared.

Then disappeared.

“Fine.”

Belini laughed bitterly.

“You trust her already.”

Luca looked at his fiancée.

“I trusted you already.”

That ended the conversation.

The warehouse was empty when they arrived.

Almost.

A single laptop sat on a crate.

Connected to a projector.

One video file waited on the desktop.

No title.

Luca pressed play.

Alessandro appeared.

Older than in the Prague photo.

Tired.

Alive.

The date stamp showed six years ago.

Two days after Emma last saw him.

“If this recording is being watched, Viktor ran.”

Emma felt cold.

Luca did not move.

“Good,” Alessandro continued. “That means he still fears the account trail.”

Matteo whispered, “He planned this.”

“Yes,” Emma said.

A dead man had built a maze and expected betrayal to move through it predictably.

Alessandro continued.

“Viktor financed the first attempt on Luca. But he did not design it.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“The designer sits closer.”

Belini looked at Carlo.

Carlo looked at her.

Emma watched both.

Alessandro smiled faintly on-screen.

“If Carlo is blaming Belini, or Belini is blaming Carlo, ignore them.”

Both froze.

Luca almost smiled.

His father had known them well.

“The person responsible used both.”

Emma leaned closer.

Alessandro continued.

“Look at the succession accounts. Not the crime accounts.”

The video ended.

Matteo opened the laptop.

One encrypted folder.

Emma sat down.

Six numbers.

Two slashes.

Offset sequence.

Her cipher.

She entered the pattern from the napkin.

The folder opened.

Inside were succession payments made after Alessandro’s fake funeral.

Lawyers.

Security contractors.

Shell companies.

Judges.

Then one name.

Repeated every year.

Giancarlo Vescari.

Belini’s father.

Belini whispered, “No.”

Emma looked at her.

Real shock.

Not performance.

Luca saw it too.

Carlo did not look surprised.

That mattered more.

Luca turned slowly toward his uncle.

“You knew.”

Carlo said nothing.

Belini stared at him.

“You knew my father was involved?”

Carlo looked tired.

“Your father was involved in everything.”

“Answer me.”

Carlo’s silence answered.

Emma opened the next file.

A contract.

Signed by Giancarlo Vescari.

Countersigned by Carlo Moretti.

Purpose:

Succession stabilization.

Payment triggered upon Luca Moretti’s permanent removal.

Belini sat down.

Luca did not.

He looked at Carlo.

“You sold my death.”

Carlo finally answered.

“No.”

Luca’s eyes hardened.

Carlo continued.

“I sold the possibility of your death.”

Emma stared.

Carlo’s voice stayed calm.

“Your father was destroying the organization trying to turn it legitimate. Someone had to prepare for what came after.”

Luca stepped closer.

“And when I didn’t die?”

Carlo looked at the laptop.

“We adapted.”

Emma understood first.

The poisoned champagne.

Not murder.

Removal.

Again.

The same plan.

May you like

A decade later.

Carlo had never stopped preparing for Luca’s absence.
