Chapter 7 - Belini’s Father and the Price of Loyalty

Belini stopped defending Carlo.
That changed the balance.
She stood across from him in the warehouse with both hands shaking.
“My father told me Alessandro was dangerous.”
Carlo looked at her.
“He was.”
“He told me Luca would destroy us.”
Carlo said nothing.
Luca watched.
Emma watched harder.
Belini continued.
“I was twenty-four when my father brought me into the legal side.”
Luca’s face hardened.
“You told me you joined after law school.”
“I did.”
“No. You joined before.”
Belini looked away.
“Unofficially.”
“How unofficial?”
She swallowed.
“I moved files.”
“What files?”
“Succession documents. Trust structures. Emergency authority.”
Luca’s expression darkened.
Everything she had access to during the engagement.
Everything the poison plot needed.
Emma asked, “Did you know about the first attempt on Luca?”
Belini looked at her.
“No.”
Carlo laughed.
Belini spun toward him.
“You said it was only financial.”
“It was.”
“You paid Viktor.”
“Your father paid Viktor.”
“You signed the contract.”
Carlo’s smile disappeared.
Luca said nothing.
He did not need to.
Belini continued.
“When Alessandro found out my father was moving money, he threatened to expose him.”
Emma frowned.
“Then why help Alessandro fake his death?”
“Because my father ordered me to.”
Everyone went quiet.
Luca stared.
“Giancarlo helped my father disappear?”
Belini nodded.
“Not to protect him.”
“To control him.”
“Yes.”
The truth settled differently now.
Alessandro’s disappearance had not been entirely his plan.
It had been a cage disguised as an escape.
Belini continued.
“Your father needed legal documents. New identities. Foreign accounts.”
“My father trusted you.”
“No.”
She gave a sad smile.
“He used me.”
“Why?”
“Because he knew I would report to my father.”
Emma understood.
“He fed you controlled information.”
Belini nodded.
“Until Prague.”
“What happened in Prague?” Luca asked.
Belini looked at Emma.
“Your father found the account trail.”
The one Emma had been auditing.
“He realized Giancarlo and Carlo had been moving money together for years.”
Carlo said, “Careful.”
Belini ignored him.
“He planned to give everything to Luca.”
Luca’s eyes hardened.
“Then why didn’t he?”
Belini’s voice dropped.
“Because someone found him first.”
Emma felt cold.
“Viktor?”
Belini shook her head.
“No.”
Carlo moved toward the warehouse door.
Matteo blocked him.
Belini looked directly at Luca.
“My father.”
Silence.
“Giancarlo killed Alessandro?”
Belini closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
Luca did not react.
Not visibly.
That made Emma worry more.
“When?”
“Two days after Prague.”
“Where?”
“Vienna.”
“How?”
Belini opened her eyes.
“I don’t know.”
Carlo laughed softly.
“Convenient.”
She turned.
“You were there.”
Carlo stopped smiling.
Luca’s attention sharpened.
Belini continued.
“My father called you after.”
“No.”
“You came back with Alessandro’s ring.”
Luca’s face changed.
His father’s ring.
The one Carlo had given Luca after the funeral twelve years earlier.
Claiming it had been recovered from Palermo.
Luca slowly looked at his uncle’s hand.
“You had it six years before you gave it to me?”
Carlo said nothing.
That was answer enough.
Emma felt the final betrayal settle into place.
The funeral had been false.
The ring had been false evidence.
And the man comforting Luca after Alessandro’s “death” had later helped hide the real one.
Luca stepped toward Carlo.
“What happened in Vienna?”
Carlo looked at him.
Then at Belini.
Then at Emma.
“You want the truth?”
“Yes.”
Carlo’s eyes hardened.
“Your father chose you over the organization.”
Luca said nothing.
“So the organization chose itself.”
May you like
And for the first time, Emma understood Carlo did not think he had betrayed the Moretti family.
He thought he had saved it.
