Chapter 11 - The Arraignment

Two weeks after the wedding catastrophe,

I found myself sitting in the public gallery of the federal district courthouse.

Clara sat directly beside me,

wearing a sharp black blazer and holding my hand for moral support.

Across the aisle,

seated behind the defense table,

sat Julian Vance.

He looked unrecognizable.

The immaculate,

well-tailored architect who had charmed three hundred wedding guests was gone.

In his place sat a hollow-eyed man in a wrinkled orange jumpsuit,

his hair unwashed,

shoulders slumped in absolute defeat.

When Julian entered the courtroom,

his eyes swept over the gallery.

He spotted Clara and me sitting in the front row.

For a split second,

a flash of raw,

unadulterated hatred crossed his features.

Then it vanished,

replaced by a pathetic,

pleading expression that begged for mercy.

I didn't blink.

I didn't look away.

I stared back at him with icy indifference,

letting him see firsthand that his power over me was entirely extinguished.

The federal judge,

a stern woman with steel-rimmed glasses and an imposing demeanor,

hammered her gavel once.

“All rise for the United States District Court,

” the bailiff announced loudly.

We all stood,

listening as the formal charges were read aloud by the prosecutor.

Bank fraud,

wire fraud,

identity theft,

interstate transportation of stolen funds,

and bigamy.

Twenty-two felony counts in total.

When asked how he pleaded,

Julian’s defense attorney stood up nervously.

“Not guilty at this time,

Your Honor,

pending plea negotiations.

” A murmur rippled through the courtroom press benches.

The prosecutor stood up immediately,

adjusting his suit jacket.

“Your Honor,

given the overwhelming forensic evidence,

including forged digital signatures,

offshore bank transfers,

and verified bigamous marriage records,

the government requests no bail due to extreme flight risk.

” The judge reviewed the file for a tense,

silent moment.

She then looked directly across the courtroom at Julian.

“Mr.

Vance,

the scale of deception and financial manipulation demonstrated in these indictments is staggering,

” the judge stated coldly.

“Given the severity of the charges and the evidence presented,

bail is denied.

You will remain remanded in federal custody pending trial.

” Julian buried his face in his hands as the bailiff stepped up behind him,

clicking the handcuffs into place once more.

The gavel slammed down with a sharp,

final crack.

It was over.

As the deputies led Julian away through the side exit,

he cast one final,

lingering glance toward our bench.

I didn't feel pity.

I didn't feel anger.

I only felt a profound sense of closure.

Clara squeezed my hand tightly,

letting out a long,

shuddering sigh of relief.

“He’s never getting out,

” Clara whispered.

“Not for a very long time,

” I replied,

standing up to adjust my jacket.

“Come on,

Clara.

May you like

Let’s go outside and breathe some fresh air.
