Chapter 5 - The Stranger's Secret

The atmosphere in the chapel shifted from stunned shock to palpable anger.

Several guests in the back pews began collecting their coats,

muttering angrily about having wasted their weekend on a circus.

Clara stepped closer to the altar steps,

looking up at me with deep remorse etched into every line of her face.

“I never wanted to hurt you,

Elena,

” Clara said,

her voice shaking slightly.

“When I saw the engagement announcement in the local paper six months ago,

my heart broke for you.

” “Why didn't you say anything sooner?” I asked,

my voice remarkably steady despite the hurricane raging inside my chest.

“I tried,

” Clara replied,

holding up her smartphone.

“I sent messages to your social media accounts,

but Julian intercepted them and blocked me before you ever saw them.

” I remembered those random blocked notifications and missing connection requests.

I had foolishly blamed technical glitches or spam filters.

Julian had meticulously managed every digital boundary to keep his secret life locked away.

“He told me you were just an unstable ex-girlfriend who couldn't let go,

” I whispered,

realizing the depth of his manipulation.

“That’s his favorite lie,

” Clara said bitterly,

turning her gaze toward Julian.

“He used the exact same excuse with me when we first met,

claiming his ex was harassing him.

” Julian finally found his voice,

stepping forward with a desperate,

frantic sneer.

“Shut up,

Clara!” he shouted,

losing all remaining composure.

“You're ruining everything based on your own bitter jealousy!” “Jealousy?” Clara scoffed,

stepping right up to him.

“I am legally your wife,

Julian! That is not jealousy; that is federal fraud!” My father stepped in between them before Julian could lash out physically.

“Back off,

you coward,

” my father warned,

his voice dangerously low.

“If you lay a finger on her,

I will personally throw you through that stained-glass window.

” The wedding coordinator stood near the doors,

looking utterly pale,

clutching a clipboard like a shield.

“Should.

.

.

should I call security?” she stammered.

“Call the police,

” I corrected her loudly.

“Call the police and let them handle bigamy and financial fraud.

” Julian’s face turned an unhealthy shade of purple.

“You wouldn't dare,

” he hissed,

turning his desperate eyes back to me.

“Think of what this will do to our families,

our friends,

our reputations.

” “Our reputations?” I laughed bitterly,

stepping down from the altar to stand face-to-face with the man I had almost married.

“You sold my trust for a trust fund,

Julian.

You deserve every single consequence coming your way.

” I turned away from him,

walking over to Clara.

I extended my hand,

and after a brief moment of hesitation,

she took it.

Her palm was cold,

mirroring my own.

“Thank you,

” I said quietly.

“You saved me from a lifetime of misery.

” “You saved yourself,

” Clara replied with a sad,

understanding smile.

The chapel doors swung open again,

but this time it wasn't another guest.

It was two uniform police officers responding to an emergency call placed by the venue manager.

The real drama was only just beginning.
