Chapter 7 - Grandmother's Confession

Later that evening,
long after the police had taken Julian away and the chapel had cleared out,
I received a phone call.
The caller ID read Grandma Vance.
I hesitated for a moment before pressing accept,
wondering what part the elderly matriarch had played in this chaotic web.
“Hello,
Elena,
” her frail,
shaking voice came through the speaker.
“I heard what happened at the chapel today.
” “Hello,
Grandma,
” I replied softly,
sitting alone on the edge of my unmade bed in my old childhood room.
“Are you holding up alright,
child?” she asked,
sounding genuinely concerned.
“I’m surviving,
” I admitted honestly.
“Grandma,
why didn't you tell me sooner? If you knew he was married to Clara,
why let it go this far?” A heavy sigh echoed through the phone line,
filled with decades of family sorrow.
“I tried to warn you in every way I could,
Elena,
” she explained,
her voice cracking.
“Julian is my grandson,
yes,
but he inherited his father’s ruthless greed.
Whenever I tried to expose his past marriages or his financial schemes,
his mother threatened to put me in a nursing home and cut me off from the family.
” “His mother knew too?” I asked,
my blood running cold.
“Martha Vance helped him hide Clara away in an apartment across town three years ago,
” Grandma revealed.
“They thought they could outsmart the trust fund stipulations by marrying you under a false affidavit while keeping Clara quiet with hush money.
” The sheer scale of their conspiracy made my head spin.
It wasn't just Julian; it was a generational sickness rooted in deception and wealth protection.
“When I saw you standing in the bridal suite today,
looking so radiant and innocent,
I couldn't let you ruin your life for that monster,
” Grandma continued,
tears thickening her voice.
“That’s why I gave you the warning about those four words.
” “‘Just let me explain’,
” I recited quietly.
“Those were the exact words he used right before trying to trap me into walking down the aisle.
” “He has used those exact words to manipulate every woman in our family for years,
” Grandma said bitterly.
“I’m so sorry my flesh and blood put you through this nightmare,
Elena.
” “You don’t have to apologize,
Grandma,
” I said,
feeling a strange sense of closure wash over me.
“You saved me.
If it wasn't for your warning,
I might be legally tied to a criminal right now.
” “What are you going to do next?” she asked.
“I’m going to rebuild,
” I answered firmly.
“And believe me,
I’m going to make sure Julian and his mother face every legal consequence for what they've done.
” “Good,
” the old woman whispered with a fierce pride in her tone.
“Show them that a Vance woman can never be broken by a liar.
” We hung up shortly after,
and as I placed my phone on the nightstand,
I looked at my reflection in the mirror.
The wedding dress was gone,
replaced by comfortable loungewear.
The tears were dried,
May you like
replaced by an unbreakable resolve.
I was free.
